Data Modeling and Data Analytics: A Survey from a Big Data Perspective  [PDF]
André Ribeiro, Afonso Silva, Alberto Rodrigues da Silva
Journal of Software Engineering and Applications (JSEA) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/jsea.2015.812058
Abstract: These last years we have been witnessing a tremendous growth in the volume and availability of data. This fact results primarily from the emergence of a multitude of sources (e.g. computers, mobile devices, sensors or social networks) that are continuously producing either structured, semi-structured or unstructured data. Database Management Systems and Data Warehouses are no longer the only technologies used to store and analyze datasets, namely due to the volume and complex structure of nowadays data that degrade their performance and scalability. Big Data is one of the recent challenges, since it implies new requirements in terms of data storage, processing and visualization. Despite that, analyzing properly Big Data can constitute great advantages because it allows discovering patterns and correlations in datasets. Users can use this processed information to gain deeper insights and to get business advantages. Thus, data modeling and data analytics are evolved in a way that we are able to process huge amounts of data without compromising performance and availability, but instead by “relaxing” the usual ACID properties. This paper provides a broad view and discussion of the current state of this subject with a particular focus on data modeling and data analytics, describing and clarifying the main differences between the three main approaches in what concerns these aspects, namely: operational databases, decision support databases and Big Data technologies.

The scene of deep changes provided by the digital convergence shows its results in the supply chain of news photograph. The article raises doubts about this activity by a succession of steps, classifying what could photojournalism be at convergence times. From this level, five general hypotheses are formulated, showing how key points articulate with the production of contemporary photojournalism. Finally, these hypotheses are critically revisited in the light of empirical examples related to the juxtaposition of photojournalism and digital convergence.

Abstract: This article addresses, in a comparison method, the definition of the operational characteristics developed in the historic journey of wire services and how this scene can generate synchronized practices between the ambit of journalism and technology, resulting, for example, onto the web journalism. In a second time, we try to point some tendencies of research about the problem presented in thecurrent theoretical. After having identified these characteristics, we try to indicate the permanence and the balancing of all the activities of agencies with the range of possibilities provided by technological networks of information more flexible, open and participatory, as the Internet. Finally, we give scope for continuities, potentiations and breaks presented on this historical and technological journey, aswell as the importance and consequences to the area of the journalism in digital networks.
Comportamentos de consumo de haxixe e saúde mental em adolescentes: Estudo comparativo
Silva,Ana Sofia; Deus,Alberto Afonso de;
Análise Psicológica , 2005,
Abstract: the present study had the intent to evaluate the situation concerning the behaviors of consumption of hashish, in adolescents who attended school, to study the influence of variables such as, family situation, degree of influence of the group of pairs in decisions, and expectancies, in the beginning and in maintenance of the consumption of that substance. it was still intended to evaluate the existence or not of relationships between this consumption and the adolescents?mental health. the participants were 221 adolescents of both sexes, with ages between 13 and 17 years old, and that frequented between 8th and 10th, in schools of the surroundings of lisbon. as measure instruments, it was built a questionnaire (questionário sobre comportamentos de consumo de haxixe), based on one already existent to evaluate the consumption of alcohol, that after being subject to a pre-test, it was administered together with the adaptation for the portuguese population of the mental health inventory, the inventário de saúde mental. the results showed that most of the youths doesn?t consume hashish (n=181; 81,9%). of those that do (n=40; 18,1%), 42,5% do an experimental consume, 27,5% an occasional, 20% a habitual and 10% an abusive. most (27,5%) of them affirms to have had his/her first experience with hashish at 13 years old, being the main reasons for consumption the search of relaxation (31,3%) and of amusement (36,8%). friends of the same age are the main consumption companions (62,0%), being the street the elected place for most to consume (51,0%). when compared the two groups of participants (consumers versus no consumers), it was verified that, in the consumers? group a tendency exists to school become afected (40% reproved), with the dissaprovals appearing in larger number at 9th (12,5%; 16,7% in 10th). as for the family situation, it was verified the existence of a larger percentage of consumers? parents that are separate (15,0%) or divorced (25,0%). expectations of larger r

Abstract: The emergence of a new kind of communication carried out through digital technologies is bringing back the discussions about the plausibility of a deliberative democracy pattern which, in this new perspective, would be anchored in the potentialities of the new medium. This work aims to raise some issues about the interface between new media and democracy, attempting to visualize in which ways the use of cyberspace can improve popular participation in democratic process.
COLLABORATIVE PHOTOJOURNALISM IN A TIME OF CONVERGENCE
José Afonso da Silva Jr.,Eduardo Queiroga
Brazilian Journalism Research , 2010,
Abstract: This article addresses the emergence of contemporary collective photographic practice linked to photojournalism. As a theoretical framework, intersections are made with the consolidation of a new image system, recovering the previous history of photography and its interaction with journalism. In this sense, it aims to work initially with a set of characteristics and constraints which act together to define the problem. In addition, it presents a case analysis, the Cia. da Foto (Photo Company), and shows how it represents the consolidation and/or the contradictions of the phenomenon.
