Coutinho, Vivian de Lima Spode;Paiva, Rodrigo Minuto;Reiter, Keli Cristine;de-Paris, Fernanda;Barth, Afonso Luis;Machado, Alice Beatriz Mombach Pinheiro;
Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-86702010000600004
Abstract: introduction: resistance to macrolides, lincosamides and streptogramins b (mlsb antibiotics) in staphylococci may be due to modification in ribosomal target methylase encoded by erm genes. the expression of mlsb resistance lead to three phenotypes, namely constitutive resistance (cmlsb), inducible resistance (imlsb), and resistance only to macrolides and streptogramins b (msb). the imlsb resistance is the most difficult to detect in the clinical laboratory. objective: this study investigated the expression of mlsb resistance and the prevalence of the erm genes among 152 clinical isolates of staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococcus (cns) from hospital de clínicas de porto alegre. methods: primary mlsb resistance was detected by the disk diffusion method. isolates with imlsb phenotype were tested by double-disk induction method. all isolates were tested by a genotypic assay, pcr with specific primers. results: a total of 46.7% of staphylococci were positive for cmlsb; 3.3% for imlsb and 3.3% for msb. one or more erm genes were present in 50.1% of isolates. the gene erma was detected in 49 isolates, ermc in 29 and ermb in 3. conclusion: the prevalence of the erma, ermb and ermc genes were 29.6%, 17.1% and 0.66% respectively, and constitutive resistance was the most frequent as compared to the other two phenotypes.

Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S2176-94512012000400006
Abstract: introduction: degenerative changes in temporomandibular joint (tmj) have increased in prevalence and severity over the years. within this context, it's necessary to obtain safe and effective therapies for control and management of the patient in cases of osteoarthritis and osteoarthrosis of the tmj. therapeutic options range from intra-articular infiltration protocols, occlusal splints, pharmacological therapies and physiotherapy and educational measures. the alternative treatment with structure-modifying agents, like as chondroitin and glucosamine sulphates, showed promising results, and especially safety. thus, through a systematic literature review, this study aimed to analyze and discuss effectiveness and safety of chondroitin and glucosamine in degenerative changes of the tmj. methods: survey in research bases medline, cochrane, embase, pubmed, lilacs and bbo, between the years of 1966 and january 2009, with focus in randomized clinical trial (rcts) and quasi-randomized clinical trials, systematic reviews and meta-analysis. results: after application of the inclusion criteria 2 articles were selected, both randomized controlled double-blind clinical trials, which evaluated the effectiveness of chondroitin and glucosamine in degenerative changes of the tmj. conclusions: there is the necessity of further rct, with representative samples and long follow-up time, to obtainment more precise cause-effect relationships and to achieve an effective and objective protocol involving chondroitin and glucosamine in cases of degenerative changes of the tmj.

Abstract: there is evidence in electroencephalography that alpha, theta and delta band oscillations reflect cognitive and memory performances and that quantitative techniques can improve the electroencephalogram (eeg) sensitivity. this paper presents the results of comparative analysis of qeeg variables as reliable markers for alzheimer's disease (ad). we compared the sensitivity and specificity between spectral analysis (specta) and coherence (coh) within the same group of ad patients. specta and coh were calculated from eegs of 40 patients with mild to moderate ad and 40 healthy elderly controls. the peak of specta was smaller in the ad group than in controls. ad group showed predominance of slow specta in theta and delta bands and a significant reduction of inter-hemispheric coh for occipital alpha 2 and beta 1 and for frontal delta sub-band. roc curve supported that alpha band specta was more sensitive than coherence to differentiate controls from ad.

Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S2176-94512011000200008
Abstract: introduction: sleep bruxism (sb) is defined as a stereotyped and periodic movement disorder, characterized by tooth grinding and/or clenching occurring during sleep, associated with rhythmic masticatory muscle activity. this condition isn't a disease, but when exacerbated may cause an unbalance and changing of orofacial structures. thus, it is necessary to obtain effective and safe treatments for the control and management of the bruxist patient. the treatment alternatives ranges from oral devices to pharmacological and cognitive-behavioral techniques. objectives: this study, through a systematic literature review, having as research bases medline, cochrane, embase, pubmed, lilacs and bbo, between the years of 1990 and 2008, with focus in randomized and quasi-randomized clinical trials, systematic reviews and meta-analysis, had as objective to analyze and discuss possibilities of treatment for sleep bruxism. results: according to the analysis of literature there are a lot of treatment options for the sb, but many of the therapies have no scientific support. thus, the chosen therapy should be based on scientific evidences and in clinical common sense, to an improvement in quality of life of the bruxist patient.
Constru??o de indicadores para avalia??o de conceitos intangíveis em sistemas produtivos
Sellitto, Miguel Afonso;Ribeiro, José Luis Duarte;
Gest?o & Produ??o , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-530X2004000100007
Abstract: this paper describes the development and application of a method for developing measurements for intangible values in productive systems. nowadays, mainly in service organizations, intangible values are been used for modeling phenomena, understanding problems, proposing and implementing strategies. from concepts presented in the measurements theory, the philosophy of science and multivariate statistics, an approach for modeling theoretic terms relevant to productive systems is developed. the approach comprises a theoretical mapping of non-manifested variables, definition of constructs, definition of state variables, which can be related to intermediate concepts and supporting manifested variables, which can assume categorical formats, assessed by appropriate techniques like questionnaires. after the definitions, one can represent the focused phenomenon by a path-diagram. if the diagram takes a treelike form, multiple regressions may be used and the mathematical formulation becomes easier. if the diagram takes a systemic form, including circular relationships, a more complex mathematical treatment is required, escaping from the scope of this paper. the proposed approach is illustrated through a case study where the capacity of understanding the lean thinking concept was assessed in fifteen passengers transportation companies from porto alegre, brazil. the results are discussed and suggestions for the continuity of the research are presented.
