Treatment 2.0 Pilot in Vietnam—Early Progress and Challenges  [PDF]

Abstract: Announced in 2010 at the International AIDS Conference in Vienna and pioneered by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the World Health Organization's (WHO) leadership at the global level, Treatment 2.0 is a new approach to the HIV response that encourages innovation, efficiency, and sustainability. Building upon WHO and UNAIDS' \"3 by 5\" Initiative, Treatment 2.0 focuses upon scale-up and universal access of life-saving ART treatment through strategic investments and innovations in five priority pillars that include: 1) Optimize drug regimens, 2) Provide point-of-care (POC) and other simplified diagnostic and monitoring tools, 3) Reduce costs, 4) Adapt service delivery, and 5) Mobilize communities [1-3]. The Treatment 2.0 approach is in line with UNAIDS' 2011-2015 Strategy: Getting to Zero with the vision of, \"Zero New infections; Zero discrimination; and Zero AIDS-related deaths\", and as well as the four strategic directions for the health sector response outlined under WHO's Global Health Sector Strategy on HIV/AIDS 2011-2015 [4,5]. At the Sixty-fourth World Health Assembly (WHA) in May 2011, it was formally announced that Vietnam has taken the leadership to pilot Treatment 2.0 in two of its provinces, with support from both the WHO and UNAIDS country offices [6,7]. Given that Vietnam is one of the few countries with a concentrated epidemic to pilot Treatment 2.0, the outcomes and experiences of this initiative can provide valuable insight to other countries who may consider implementation. The objectives of this article are therefore to: 1) Describe the early process for translating Treatment 2.0 concept in Vietnam's context; and 2) Highlight early progress and challenges.
The Role of Library and Information Science Education in the Development of Community Health Information Services for People Living with HIV/AIDS: Perspectives of Directors and Managers of Public Libraries  [PDF]

Abstract: This article identifies the role of library and information science (LIS) education in the development of community health information services for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). Preliminary findings are presented from semi- structured qualitative interviews that were conducted with eleven directors and managers of local branches in the Knox County Public Library (KCPL) System that is located in the East Tennessee region in the United States. Select feedback reported by research participants is summarized in the article about strategies in LIS education that can help local public librarians and others in their efforts to become more responsive information providers to PLWHA. Research findings help better understand the issues and concerns regarding the development of digital and non-digital health information services for PLWHA in local public library institutions.
Determinates That Influence Food Comsumption among Older Members of a Midwest Community  [PDF]

Abstract: The goal of this study was to record Muncie, Indiana residents’ change in eating habits over time. Objectives: 1) Identify key determinants that influence a change in participants’ eating habits; 2) Analyze the data for convergent themes among participants and draw patterns; and 3) Compare patterns found in this study population with existing literature and/or accepted theories within the field. Hypotheses on changes in food patterns included: 1) Socio-economic status in the middle-class population maintained daily food production to remain inside the home; 2) Women working outside the home reduced labor hours allotted to home cooking; and 3) Social norms valued home cooking resulting in home prepared meals. Methods: The study used a cross-sectional, oral-history, interview format. The study sample consisted of 25 seniors (65y - 100y old) from a convenience sample taken from one, medium-sized, mid-western town, Muncie, Indiana. The study involved use of a semi-structured, questionnaire/interview script, (approved by Ball State University’s IRB committee). Results: Economics greatly influenced, and continues to influence, food consumption patterns for depression-era born adults. Women who grew up on home-only cooked meals, but entered the workforce adjusted traditional meals in favor of convenience. Implications: Health care providers trying to change dietary habits of older residents residing in the Midwest will need to consider foods and food preparatory methods introduced in childhood; these remained key components of the diet later in life and removing them may be met with resistance.

Abstract:

Over 300 British adults completed the Hogan Development Survey (HDS) (Hogan & Hogan, 2001), a measure of the personality disorders and the Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQi) (Bar- On, 2004). Work associates known to the participants also completed an observers’ version of the EQi. The structures of both inventories were examined. The HDS factored into three clear factors (clusters A, B, C) confirming previous analyses while the EQi had a single factor structure. Cluster B disorders (labelled Moving Against People) were correlated negatively with the Stress scale on the EQi while Cluster A disorders (labelled Moving Away from People) were negatively correlated with Intrapersonal, Interpersonal and Mood subscale scores on the EQi. Regressions showed that Avoidant, Schizoid and Narcissistic disorders most consistently related to the self-reported EQi subscale scores. Interestingly Paranoia was positively correlated with the total and the Intrapersonal EQi scores. Participants tended to have higher self, compared to observer scores on the EQi. Only one regression was significant: participants with lower Borderline and Schizotypal scores were seen to be better at Stress management.

Empirical Analysis of Factors Affecting the E-Book Adoption—Research Agenda  [PDF]

Abstract: Advances in information technology encourage the development of e-books. The 2010 Horizon Report predicts that e-book will be one of the six technologies most likely to affect higher education in coming years. Despite the huge investment in developing the e-book market, customer take-up over the past decades is still far below expectations. The success of e-book adoption depends on the implementation of an educational model that addresses learner needs as well as content relevance. To understand customer behavior intention in adopting e-books and to address the lack of holistic approach in adoption research, this project is proposed to investigate the intention of college students in using e-books. This cross-sectional research utilizes the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and four additional variables, namely, personal innovativeness of information technology, social influences, perceived costs, and environmental consciousness. The study is expected to contribute to the literature by providing an empirically validated extended TAM regarding e-books. Moreover, the results will provide important and useful information for academicians and publishers.

Abstract: In recent years, Hong Kong Education Authority has been zealously encouraging schools to reform the current teaching profession, so as to raise students’ critical thinking and creativity, as well as to enhance their innovation and motivation of learning. Along with this, American scholars (Clements 2013 [1]; Levi 2013 [2]; McCarthy 2009 [3]; McWilliam 2009 [4]) have encouraged the educational circles vigorously that they should apply innovation teaching in the teaching profession. Actually this strategy has been widely examined in United State and Japan for a period of time and the outcome is quite fruitful. Based on the lessons from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, this paper aims to shed light on a heavily under-researched multidisciplinary area: innovation and education. With a focus in the Tohoku University in Japan and The Open University of Hong Kong, this paper will examine the issue via cultural history, education policy and related social systems together with “the traditional custom”. Furthermore, this paper aims to redefine the concept of innovation in nowadays higher education teaching, to serve as a reference for potential change agents as they consider ways and means to created improved learning environments at universities and institutions, to enhance the educational circles’ interest and understanding in utilizing such new medium as well as the social power. And finally it examines and compares the social impact on the introduction of innovation teaching in higher education profession. Apart from literature studies, this paper will carry out a field study and interview in both Hong Kong and Japan, and also field observation in Tohoku University.

Abstract: The board members of the Dutch East India Company (1602-1795), the Heren Zeventien, promulgated various decrees in which they forbade to bring out information regarding their colonies in the Dutch East Indies and Batavia in letters, manuscripts and printed matter. But in Batavia some inventive Company servants and even staff members got around these regulations, as did some printers in Holland. They published newspapers like Bataviase Nouvelles and Vendu-Nieuws, and also the specialized journal Verhandelingen van het Bataviaasch Genootschap. The initiators of this journal joined hands with the Dutch world of learning and its journals. This article provides an overview of early journalism in the Dutch East Indies and thus contributes to the reconstruction of the literary and cultural climate in Batavia at the time of the VOC.
