Abstract: sciatica is caused by the sciatic nerve compression in some point of its course, and its treatment consists of solving the nervous compression cause, either by surgical or conservative treatment. some physiotherapeutic resources act basically in the reduction of the symptoms caused by this disturbance. the aim of this study was to verify the effectiveness of the laser 670 nm, in two different energy densities, in the pain reduction, in rats submitted to a sciatica experimental model. eighteen rats, divided in 3 groups were used: g1 (n=6) submitted to sciatica and simulated treatment (placebo group), g2 (n=6) submitted to sciatica and treated with laser 2 j/cm2, g3 (n=6) submitted to sciatica and irradiated with laser 4 j/cm2. the hamstring nerve of the animals' right hind limb was exposed and compression with catgut thread in 4 points of the nerve was performed. on the 3rd post-operation day, the treatment was begun with laser in the surgical procedure area of the right hind limb for 10 days. the time during which the limb remained on the air was verified through gait in the following periods: previous to the sciatica, before and after treatment. the results have demonstrated that the laser was not effective in the pain reduction; however, with 4 j/cm2 there was positive effect, without complete functionality reestablishment.

Abstract: an important issue in rehabilitation is how to protect the skeletal muscle from immobilization effects, since it is the most changeable tissue amongst the biological tissues and responds to normal or modified demands with morphological and functional adaptations. the objective of this paper was to check the effect of two different swimming load intensities on the morphological properties of the soleus muscle, and if the different degrees of swimming are effective to reverse the process of atrophy caused by immobilization during 15 days. ten rats, 10±2 weeks were used and divided in 2 groups:g1(immobilization/swimming without overload) and g2 (immobilization/swimming with 10% overload). within the variable analyzed, when the left limb (submitted to immobilization) was compared with the right limb (not submitted) it was observed: for muscle weight g1=-20.55% (p=0.0344) and g2= -17.02% (p=0.0053); for muscle length g1= -10.66% (p=0.0011) and g2= -6.55% (p=0.1016); for serial sarcomere estimate g1= -14.18% (p=0.0101) and g2= -10.99% (p=0.0043); and sarcomere length g1= 3.51% (p=0.3989) and g2= 5.28% (p=0.1771). it has been concluded that two weeks of remobilization through swimming, with different degrees of overload, were not sufficient to reverse the atrophy process caused by immobilization.

Abstract: This study aimed to study the influences of the pedagogical use of audio and video media by students in the production of educational content, using Internet research, reflections on the information and the recording of audio and video by secondary school students themselves in a public school in Rio Grande do Sul. The main question sought to answer how to use multisemiotic literacies of reading, writing, pictures, photos, audio and video production of school content to obtain meaningful learning. Preliminary results indicate a gradual increase in motivation and reflection of students by research, reading and writing the information in the teaching of the Portuguese language and literature. The experience has also shown the need for teacher training for the pedagogical use of communication, interaction and collaboration environments in social networks and technical training in the use of audio and video media in the classroom. The positive points observed in the research are the improvement of the capacity for reflection, motivation for contextual research, use of social networks as a communication and collaboration environment in group work, production of educational materials in audio and video media, improved self-criti- cism due to physical exposure of the students in the videos, speaking in public and 360? assessment performed by the students.

Abstract: Background: Adolescents are disproportionally affected by sexually transmitted infections (STI). Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) are the most frequent curable STI in adolescents, causing serious consequences for their reproductive health. Therefore, we aimed to determine the prevalence and incidence of CT and TV, as well as their risk factors in pregnant adolescents from Belém, northern Brazilian Amazon. Methods: This prospective study enrolled 199 adolescents up to 20 weeks of pregnancy. They were scheduled for follow-up visit between 28 and 29 weeks of pregnancy. Sociodemographic and behavioral data were obtained by interview. Cervicovaginal samples were taken to test for TV, CT, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and bacterial vaginosis. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to test the association of prevalent/incident CT and TV with the variables. Results: Prevalence of cervical CT infection was 33.7% (n = 67/ 199), and for trichomoniasis it was 4.0% (n = 8/199). Cervical ectopy increased the risk for prevalent CT (OR, 1.93; 95% CI, 1.01 - 3.70), while having treated vaginal discharge in the past (OR, 0.51; 95% CI, 0.26 - 0.98) and being married (OR, 0.10; 95% CI, 0.01 - 0.83) were protective against current CT and TV, respectively. Among the 95 (47.7%) adolescents who completed follow-up, 15 cases of incident CT were identified. Incident CT was associated with having a formal or informal job (OR, 28.4; 95% CI, 2.1 - 391.6) and bacterial vaginosis treatment at the baseline (OR, 0.08; 95% CI, 0.01 - 0.69). Conclusion: Prevalence and incidence rates of TV and CT are high in this population devoid of STI routine screening. Treatment of bacterial vaginosis may benefit this population by reducing risk for CT acquisition.
Time-integrated North Atlantic Oscillation as a proxy for climatic change  [PDF]
Adriano Mazzarella
Natural Science (NS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ns.2013.51A023
Abstract:

The time-integrated yearly values of North Atlantic Oscillation (INAO) are found to be well correlated to the sea surface temperature. The results give the feasibility of using INAO as a good proxy for climate change and contribute to a more complete picture of the full range of variability inherent in the climate system. Moreover, the extrapolation in the future of the well identified 65-year harmonic in INAO suggests a gradual decline in global warming starting from 2005.

Abstract: therapeutic ultrasound is a physical therapy resource for relieving sciatic pain. the aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of continuous therapeutic ultrasound in two different power densities (0,5 w/cm2 and 1 w/cm2), on reducing pain in rats submitted to a sciatica experimental model. twenty rats were used, divided into 3 groups: g1 (n=6) submitted to sciatica and placebo treatment; g2 (n=7) submitted to sciatica and treated with 0.5 w/cm2 ultrasound; and g3 (n=7), submitted to sciatica and treated with 1 w/cm2 ultrasound. sciatica was provoked by surgical nerve compression on the right posterior limb of all animals. treatment on the surgical procedure region consisted in ten daily 5-minute sessions, starting on the 3rd postoperative day. pain was inferred by the time of paw elevation (tpe) during gait, measured before the surgery and on five further moments. results showed tpe increase in all groups after surgery; but in both groups actually treated with ultrasound a significant tep decrease was noticed, practically reaching initial values, the decrease being more precocious and intense in g2. continuous ultrasound such as was delivered was hence effective in reducing sciatic pain.
