Psico-USF , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-82712003000200011
Abstract: the present research assessed the subjective well-being, comparing youngsters employed in two different frameworks and non-workers. the participants were 193 adolescents living in poverty, aged from14 to 17 years (77 non-workers, being that 58 were working in the regular system, and 58 employed in an educational system). the instruments used were a demographic questionnaire, the multidimensional life satisfaction scale, the positive and negative affect scale and the stressful situations scale. the data indicated that work in adolescence can be positive, especially if in an educational system. the results showed that adolescents working in educational programs were more satisfied with their lives than the others. also, they showed more satisfaction with their work than the adolescents employed in the regular system.

Psicologia: Teoria e Pesquisa , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-37722008000300010
Abstract: the present paper's purpose was to investigate the harter self-perception scale thru a convergent validity analysis. the participants were 291 southern adolescents, mean age 17 years, from both sexes and high school students. the instruments were the harter self perception scale (hsps-a), the rosenberg's self esteem scale, the multidimensional life satisfaction scale and the children depression inventory. the results offered evidence of satisfactory psychometrics characteristics of the hsps-a. the reliability analysis indicated acceptable coefficients (∝=0.60 a ∝=0.88). the construct validity was confirmed thru the correlation analysis with the other instruments once all coefficients were significant and in the expected direction. the high correlation among the instruments indicates the need of other research to evaluate the self-perception dimensions and the relations between this and other correlates constructs such as self-esteem, life satisfaction and self-concept.

Abstract: The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) is internationally accepted as a key tool for the assessment of childhood abuse and neglect experiences. However, there are relative few psychometric studies available and some authors have proposed two different factor solutions. We examined the dimensional structure and internal consistency of the Brazilian version of the CTQ. A total of 1,925 participants from eight different clinical and non-clinical samples including adolescents, adults and elders were considered in this study. First, we performed Confirmatory Factor Analysis to investigate the goodness of fit of the two proposed competitive factor structure models for the CTQ. We also investigated the internal consistency of all factors. Second, multi-group analyses were used to investigate measurement invariance and population heterogeneity across age groups and sex. Our findings revealed that the alternative factor structure as opposed to the original factor structure was the most appropriate model within adolescents and adults Brazilian samples. We provide further evidence for the validity and reliability of the CTQ within the Brazilian samples and report that the alternative model showed an improvement in fit indexes and may be a better alternative over the original model.

Psicologia: Reflex?o e Crítica , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-79722008000200020
Abstract: draw-a-person test (dap) is widely used to assess cognitive development, although, the recognition of the validity of this instrument is not complete. in brazil, the wechsler system of evaluation of dap has already been approved by the federal psychology board. however, considering the need to periodically re-evaluate an instrument, this study attempted to test both convergent and concurrent validity of the dap - cognitive system according to wechsler. thus, raven's progressive matrices, a nationally and internationally validated instrument, was used to analyze convergent validity and a school performance scale was used to analyze concurrent validity. ninety children from 6 to 12 years old (m=8,99 and sd=1,79), 37 girls and 53 boys, from public schools (kindergarten to 6th grade), who did not engage in psychological treatment and did not have learning disabilities participated in this study. results showed moderate positive correlations among the three instruments, confirming that dap scored via wechsler' system is a valid measure of cognitive development. suggestions are made in the sense of including dap in assessment batteries or using it as a brief assessment.

Abstract: the search for welfare is the motor to human development. it is the search for well-being that makes humankind struggle for its ideals. the development of this capacity is closely related to the early experiences that one has in his/her family. thus, this study investigated to what extent the family configuration contributes to the adolescents well-being. the sample had 391 adolescents, of which 196 were from intact families and 195 from remarried families. goldberg?s (1978) general health questionnaire (ghq) was used, subdivided into 12 items. results showed that most adolescents (81%) presented a general well-being level ranging from good to very good. there was no significant difference between adolescents from intact and remarried families.

Abstract: A busca do bem-estar é o motor do desenvolvimento humano.

Abstract: Background There is evidence that a young child's risk of dying increases following the mother's death, but little is known about the risk when the mother becomes very ill prior to her death. We hypothesized that children would be more likely to die during the period several months before their mother's death, as well as for several months after her death. Therefore we investigated the relationship between young children's likelihood of dying and the timing of their mother's death and, in particular, the existence of a critical period of increased risk. Methods and Findings Data from a health and socio-demographic surveillance system in rural South Africa were collected on children 0–5 y of age from 1 January 1994 to 31 December 2008. Discrete time survival analysis was used to estimate children's probability of dying before and after their mother's death, accounting for moderators. 1,244 children (3% of sample) died from 1994 to 2008. The probability of child death began to rise 6–11 mo prior to the mother's death and increased markedly during the 2 mo immediately before the month of her death (odds ratio [OR] 7.1 [95% CI 3.9–12.7]), in the month of her death (OR 12.6 [6.2–25.3]), and during the 2 mo following her death (OR 7.0 [3.2–15.6]). This increase in the probability of dying was more pronounced for children whose mothers died of AIDS or tuberculosis compared to other causes of death, but the pattern remained for causes unrelated to AIDS/tuberculosis. Infants aged 0–6 mo at the time of their mother's death were nine times more likely to die than children aged 2–5 y. The limitations of the study included the lack of knowledge about precisely when a very ill mother will die, a lack of information about child nutrition and care, and the diagnosis of AIDS deaths by verbal autopsy rather than serostatus. Conclusions Young children in lower income settings are more likely to die not only after their mother's death but also in the months before, when she is seriously ill. Interventions are urgently needed to support families both when the mother becomes very ill and after her death. Please see later in the article for the Editors' Summary

Información tecnológica , 2011, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-07642011000100010
Abstract: a numerical study about three-dimensional steady state turbulent channel flows and laminar transient cavity flows with mixed convection heat transfer has been done. the solution of the conservation equations is obtained by means of finite element method and taylor-galerkin explicit scheme. large eddy simulation is employed for the treatment of turbulence. for the isothermal case, flows with re = 3300 were simulated using the smagorinsky and dynamical subgrid models. the latter model allowed improving the average velocity profiles as well as turbulence statistics. the transient velocity and temperature fields were compared with results of the literature, leading to a deviation lower than 6%.
