Mapping 18S ribosomal genes in fish of the genus Brycon (Characidae) by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH)
Wasko, Adriane Pinto;Galetti Jr., Pedro Manoel;
Genetics and Molecular Biology , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-47572000000100025
Abstract: the present study provides data on the nucleolar organizer regions (nors) of seven brycon species based on mapping of the 18s rrna genes by fluorescence in situ hybridization (fish). fluorescent signals were observed on the telomere of the long arm of two large submetacentric chromosomes, thus confirming the number and location of nors previously revealed by other classical cytogenetic techniques. although there were no inter- or intra-individual variations in the number and location of the 18s loci, nor size polymorphism was observed between homologous chromosomes. the clustering and conservation of nors in a single chromosome pair indicates a high level of nor stability among species of the genus brycon.

Kamulegeya Adriane
Open Journal of Stomatology (OJST) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/ojst.2011.12009
Abstract: We reviewed the case notes of 203 patients who were treated for sarcomas of the oral and maxillofacial region over a period of 5 years. There were 98 male cases (mean age 31.4 ± 12.8 years) and 105 female cases (mean age 29.3 ± 10.4). Kaposi’s sarcoma accounted for 82.8% cases, and rhabdomyosarcoma 6.9% followed by osteosarcoma and chondrosarcoma at 2.5% each. Except for Kaposi’s sarcoma, surgery in combination with radiotherapy and/or chemothe- rapy was the main stay of treatment. Survival data was not available for most of our patients.
Identification and description of distinct B chromosomes in Cyphocharax modestus (Characiformes, Curimatidae)
Santos, Lessandra Viviane De Rosa;Foresti, Fausto;Martins, Cesar;Oliveira, Claudio;Wasko, Adriane Pinto;
Genetics and Molecular Biology , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-47572008000200019
Abstract: cytogenetic analyses were performed in cyphocharax modestus, collected at paranapanema river and tietê river (s?o paulo state, brazil). a karyotype with 2n = 54 chromosomes was observed in the animals from both brazilian freshwater river systems. one to four b chromosomes were also detected in individuals from the paranapanema river, which represents the probable first report of more than a single supernumerary element in a species of the curimatidae group. c-banding revealed centromeric and telomeric heterochromatin blocks in several chromosomes of the normal karyotype complement of c. modestus. moreover, while some b chromosomes were characterized by the complete absence of c-bands, others were totally heterochromatic. although there was a prevalence of b chromosomes in males of c. modestus, at least one supernumerary element was found in males and/or females of several other populations of the species, which suggests that the presence of these chromosomes seems to represent a general trait of c. modestus. a possible origin of the described b chromosomes may be related to the occurrence of a chromosome non-disjunction followed by the loss of euchromatic segments, an event that should have occurred in chromosomes that present conspicuous centromeric heterochromatic blocks and even in chromosomes that lack c-bands in this region, resulting in small supernumerary elements.

Abstract: the 5s ribosomal dna (5s rdna) of higher eukaryotes is organized in repeat units of tandem arrays composed of a 5s rdna coding region, conserved even among non-related taxa, and a variable non-transcribed spacer sequence (nts). to contribute to knowledge on the organization and evolution of vertebrate 5s rdna we used pcr, nucleotide sequencing, southern blot hybridization and chromosome fluorescence in situ hybridization (fish) to investigate 5s rdna tandem repeats in the south american curimatidae fish steindachnerina insculpta and cyphocharax modesta. 5s rdna repeats of 180 base pairs (bp) from both species were pcr-generated and sequenced evidencing the shortest 5s rdna monomer so far described in eukaryote species. southern blotting revealed that both species contained two tandem 5s rdna classes, the pcr amplified fragment composed of 180 bp monomers and a class of 1600 bp monomers not detected by pcr. chromosome mapping of the 5s rdna repeats identified a major locus in both species and a second minor locus only in c. modesta. the southern blot and chromosome mapping data indicate the presence of different types of 5s rdna tandem repeats in the curimatidae genome.

Abstract: a reflexive article about risk factors and prostate cancer prevention actions is presented to contribute to the approach of men, especially during nursing consultation. increasing age, ethnical origin and heredity are potential risk factors. low-fat diet and a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains and others, are related as capable of potentially minimize the risks. finasteride, a drug that is inhibitor of 5 alpha-reductase has been studied as a risk reducer. investigating the disease by measuring levels of prostate-specific antigen (psa) and digital rectal examination is also a recommended action. however, further scientific evidences about these factors are being sough. the approach of men in nursing consultation may contribute to the identification of risk factors, signs and symptoms of possible changes.

Abstract: background: the fasting plasma glucose (fpg) test is a predictor of complications after acute coronary syndrome (acs). however, its prognostic value is not yet fully established in different age groups. objective: to evaluate the role of admission fasting plasma glucose (fpg) as a predictor of 30 days after acs, and the association of hyperglycemia with major cardiovascular events (mace): death, reinfarction and coronary artery bypass grafting, in two different age groups (<65 year and >65 year-old patients). methods: contemporary cohort of patients hospitalized for acs in the institute of cardiology of rio grande do sul (southern brazil). in the first 24 hours of admission, patients answered a questionnaire with clinical information and had peripheral blood collected for measurement of fpg. patients were followed up during hospitalization and for 30 days for the presence of mace. statistical analyses were performed using the spss 15.0 with the chi-square or fisher exact test (categorical variables) and the student t test (numerical variables). multivariate analysis was performed. results: 580 patients were included in the study. mean age was 61.2 (a±12.3) years, with 38.6% of the patients (224) >65 years old, and 67.7% (393) were male. multivariable analysis showed that, after 30 days of follow-up, only fpg (or= 1.01, 95% ci:1.00-1.01, p= 0.001) was associated with mace in both age groups. conclusion: admission fpg was an independent predictor for mace in the early phase of acs.
Cuckoo Search for Solving Economic Dispatch Load Problem  [PDF]
Adriane B. S. Serapi?o
Intelligent Control and Automation (ICA) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ica.2013.44046
Abstract:

Economic Load Dispatch (ELD) is a process of scheduling the required load demand among available generation units such that the fuel cost of operation is minimized. The ELD problem is formulated as a nonlinear constrained optimization problem with both equality and inequality constraints. In this paper, two test systems of the ELD problems are solved by adopting the Cuckoo Search (CS) Algorithm. A comparison of obtained simulation results by using the CS is carried out against six other swarm intelligence algorithms: Particle Swarm Optimization, Shuffled Frog Leaping Algorithm, Bacterial Foraging Optimization, Artificial Bee Colony, Harmony Search and Firefly Algorithm. The effectiveness of each swarm intelligence algorithm is demonstrated on a test system comprising three-generators and other containing six-generators. Results denote superiority of the Cuckoo Search Algorithm and confirm its potential to solve the ELD problem.

Roso, Adriane;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2000000200009
Abstract: this article refers to a reception research of seven television prevention campaigns, done in south brazil - porto alegre, rio grande do sul, with 38 women, ages 18-51 years old, from low-income class. the sample was divided in two groups: women that don't participate in groups that fight against aids/hiv and women that participates in groups that fight against aids/hiv. based in a qualitative framework, the depth hermeneutic and the feminist theory were employed in order to study the ideology and gender relations underneath the campaigns' messages. the results indicate that for both groups of women television is an important source of aids related information, although they believe the campaigns do not stimulate the use of condom. while the first group of women agrees and identifies themselves with the majority of messages and images within the campaigns, the second group perceives that behind the messages the voice of the ideology operates, throughout a variety of strategies, to create and to establish relations of domination.
