An Integrated Supply Chain Perspective Evaluation for Biodiesel Production in Brazil
Adriana Leiras,Silvio Hamacher,Luiz Felipe Scavarda
Brazilian Journal of Operations & Production Management , 2010,
Abstract: Biodiesel has been highlighted as an important source of energy worldwide, but there is still a lack of research focused on Brazil, a major biofuel producer. Within this context, this paper analyzes the biodiesel supply chain developed from oil plants in Brazil and evaluates its feasibility. To achieve this goal, visits in loco and interviews with 42 participants were conducted across different links in the supply chain, from the farming of oil plants (agricultural production) to the extraction of oil and the production of biodiesel, up to its distribution (logistics) and commercialization. The paper also develops an economic evaluation model that generated 204 scenarios for the complete supply chain analysis for biodiesel produced from soybean, palm, castor, and cotton. Despite the many price fluctuations observed since the beginning of this research (end of 2005), for instance the petroleum diesel and oil plant prices, the conclusion of this work is that biofuel can be a feasible fuel alternative in Brazil. However, further studies should be conducted to address pending issues like the possible competition of the biodiesel supply chain with food chains and the expansion of crop cultivation areas into the native flora in Brazil.

Abstract: the evaluation of suppliers’ performance is important for organizations because of the imperative role they play in the supply chains and the importance that purchasing functions have due to the outsourcing of activities which are not part of the company’s know-how. there is a need to work on the identification of practical problems concerning the design and implementation of supplier performance measurement systems (spms). this paper presents the most important factors in designing and implementing such systems through an action research in a multinational media enterprise. in addition to the details of the method and results of its application, the paper presents an analysis of processes and attributes that define the design of the proposed system. the authors aim to contribute to the academic literature in providing practical issues regarding spms.

The evaluation of suppliers’ performance is important for organizations because of the imperative role they play in the supply chains and the importance that purchasing functions have due to the outsourcing of activities which are not part of the company’s know-how.

Abstract: the autor determined the number of chromosomes of hydnocarpus laurifolia (dennst). sleumer and found 2n = 48. he ventures the hypothesis that this species is a natural tetraploid.
Resilience to Leaking — Dynamic Systems Modeling of Information Security
Kay Hamacher
PLOS ONE , 2012, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0049804
Abstract: Leaking of confidential material is a major threat to information security within organizations and to society as a whole. This insight has gained traction in the political realm since the activities of Wikileaks, which hopes to attack ‘unjust’ systems or ‘conspiracies’. Eventually, such threats to information security rely on a biologistic argument on the benefits and drawbacks that uncontrolled leaking might pose for ‘just’ and ‘unjust’ entities. Such biological metaphors are almost exclusively based on the economic advantage of participants. Here, I introduce a mathematical model of the complex dynamics implied by leaking. The complex interactions of adversaries are modeled by coupled logistic equations including network effects of econo-communication networks. The modeling shows, that there might arise situations where the leaking envisioned and encouraged by Wikileaks and the like can strengthen the defending entity (the ‘conspiracy’). In particular, the only severe impact leaking can have on an organization seems to originate in the exploitation of leaks by another entity the organization competes with. Therefore, the model suggests that leaks can be used as a `tactical mean’ in direct adversary relations, but do not necessarily increase public benefit and societal immunization to ‘conspiracies’. Furthermore, within the model the exploitation of the (open) competition between entities seems to be a more promising approach to control malicious organizations : divide-et-impera policies triumph here.

Incomplete information in scale-free networks
K. Hamacher
Physics , 2004,
Abstract: We investigate the effect of incomplete information on the growth process of scale-free networks - a situation that occurs frequently e.g. in real existing citation networks. Two models are proposed and solved analytically for the scaling behavior of the connectivity distribution. These models show a varying scaling exponent with respect to the model parameters but no break-down of scaling thus introducing the first models of scale-free networks in an environment of incomplete information. We compare to results from computer simulations which show a very good agreement.
Properties of Gluon and Quark Jets
Klaus Hamacher
Physics , 1998,
Abstract: Recent developments and results on the comparison of gluon to quark jets are discussed. A most important topic is the introduction of explicit energy scales of the jets. The scaling violation of the fragmentation function and the increase of the multiplicity with scale is shown to be directly proportional to the corresponding gluon or quark colour factor. The ratio of the hadron multiplicity in gluon to quark jets is understood to be smaller than the colour factor ratio due to differences in the fragmentation of the leading quark or gluon. Novel algorithms to reconstruct the colour portraits or the colour flow of an event are presented.
Effective Charges in Practice
Klaus Hamacher
Physics , 2006,
Abstract: Experimental results on event shapes obtained within (or related to) the method of Effective Charges are discussed in view of measurements of the strong coupling, alpha_s, the beta-function and non-perturbative contributions to event shapes. The data strongly advocate to use of the ECH scheme instead of the conventional MSbar scheme.
