História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702005000100006
Abstract: the article analyzes the political and social impacts of the 1918 spanish flu epidemic in the city of rio de janeiro, then brazil's federal capital. based on an analysis of rio de janeiro press reports and of other documentation (including annals, reports, and bulletins from a federal ministry, the mayor's office, and the chamber of deputies, along with studies from the brazilian national academy of medicine and dissertations from rio de janeiro's faculdade de medicina), we explore use of the epidemic as a means of political engineering. our focus is on how the epidemic impacted not only the representation of certain political and social actors but also the reaffirmation of a group of sanitarians as an intelligentsia with a vocation for political leadership who played a key role in the process of modernizing brazilian society.

In a stressful workplace, friends can provide support and understanding. Losing a friend at work means no longer have a source of help (Sias, Heath, Perry, Smith and Fix, 2004). The breakup of a relationship of friendship, in an organization, can occur for several reasons, such as personalities of friends, conflicting expectations, betrayals and promotions. In this research, we chose to explore the promotion and understanding, from the perspective of couples surveyed, their influence in the relations of friendship. It was used a qualitative approach with semi-structured in-depth, applied to six dyads in four large companies, analyzed using content analysis. The study pointed to questions about the existence of a relationship of friendship in the workplace and highlights the lack of consensus on the characterization of this type of relationship.

Abstract:

The study aimed to establish floral composition, diversity levels, category size, phytosociological structure, commercial use and ecological group of species present in the regeneration of open ombrophile forest in southern Amazon, Brazil. Data were collected at S?o Nicolau farm, in the municipality of Cotrigua?u, northwest of Mato Grosso state, coordinates 51°9'19.5\"S and 58°14'53\"W. One hundred plots of 10 × 10 m were allocated. All individuals between 29.9 and 59.9 cm had circumference at breast height (CAP) measure, with sub-plots of 5 × 5 m which were measured in all subjects between 1:50 m in height 29.9 cm CAP and sub-plots of 2 × 2 m for individuals between 0.30 to 1.5 m tall. The information obtained in the field were processed in excel spreadsheet. The results showed the occurrence of 610 individuals belonging to 82 species, 34 plant families, with a diversity index of Shannon & Weavers 2.77. The index of value of importance showed species Protium robustum,

Safety Climates in Construction Industry: Understanding the Role of Construction Sites and Workgroups  [PDF]

Open Journal of Safety Science and Technology (OJSST) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojsst.2013.34010
Abstract:

Studies of safety climate in construction revealed a significant positive association between safety climate and various aspects of occupational health and safety. The mechanisms through which this impact operates are still unclear and safety climate is usually studied without considering the complexity of this industry (companies, worksites and groups). The aim of this research is to analyze to what extend there are differences between construction sites and to explore the relations between construction sites’ safety climate and workers’ safety response and to examine how this influence occur considering the workgroups. The safety climate was evaluated using a reduced version of the questionnaire that is a part of Battery HERC (Herramienta para evaluacion riesgos comportamentales). The data were collected in a Portuguese construction company (5 construction sites; including sub-contractors) comprising 213 workers. Differences between construction sites safety climate were found, suggesting the prevalence of safety sub-climates. The workgroup safety climate played a determinant role on workers’ safety response in subcontracted workgroups and it is an important mechanism through which the principal contractor can influence subcontractors’ safety response. Designers of preven- tion and training programs for accidents prevention should include specific contents in order to improve supervisory safety leadership and workgroup safety responses.
