Health (Health) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/health.2014.611161
Abstract: This quasi-experimental intervention was conducted with 10- to 14-year-old students enrolled in public schools in Teresina, Brazil, to evaluate the effects of a nutritional education program on the students’ knowledge, behaviour and attitudes towards nutrition. The dietary attitudes were evaluated in terms of food tastes/preferences and food behaviours. The participants in the study included 126 students from four schools. Differences between before and after the intervention were found regarding knowledge about the “food pyramid”, “healthy eating” and “nutrients” (p < 0.05). There was reduction from 35% to 18.2% (p = 0.029) in the preference for unhealthy foods, such as greasy meats and processed foods. The students reported changes in their dietary behaviour in response to the intervention (p < 0.05). The educational model used in this study was shown to be effective for modifying the food and nutritional knowledge levels of the students and the associated dietary attitudes and practices.

Abstract: accidents caused by venomous animals are still a public health problem in brazil. although the production and distribution of antivenom is controlled, several regions have difficulties in reporting this type of accident. considering such fact, a cross-sectional study was carried out using indirect files on venom accidents that occurred in campina grande, along with 80 small towns comprising the region, from january to december 2005. the main objective was to outline a better epidemiological and clinical profile of these cases. all patients admitted to the poisoning information center of campina grande (ceatox-cg) had their injuries medically diagnosed as injuries caused by venomous snakes. data collection was based on the use of a reporting form by the national reporting system - sinan (sistema nacional de notifica??o de agravo do ministério da saúde). data analysis consisted of descriptive statistics using microsoft excel 2003. a number of 737 out of 1,443 patients who received care at the medical center had their cases related to venomous animals, and 277 of the accidents had been caused by venomous and non- venomous snakes. most accidents involved men, from 10 to 29 years of age, including peasants in rural areas, from may to november 2005. most of the cases (71.5%) involved the bothrops genus and upper and lower limbs, especially feet. as to severity, most of the cases were classified as mild, caused by the bothrops genus, and only one patient died. the average length of time spent in providing care to the victims was over 12 hours in severe cases caused by bothrops and crotalus. our results agree with the national epidemiological profile of snakebites, which are more frequent amongst male peasants aged from 10 to 49, affecting especially lower limbs, caused most often by the bothrops genus.

The present work is an analysis of two magazine reports referring to the episode of the invasion of Córrego da Ponte Farm, situated in Buritis, MG, which happened on March 23rd, 2002, led by the Landless Workers Movement (MST). Córrego da Ponte is property of the family of Fernando Henrique Cardoso (The president of Brazil at that time). The first of those reports (Veja Magazine, April 3rd, 2002, p. 46 to 50) is seen in details, since it presents elements of an idealized cognitive model - frame (Fauconnier, 1997) underlying the superstructure of the text. The existence of such frame, revealed by certain linguistic elements, especially the lexical choice, tends to raise dualistic interpretations of the socio-political event being reported. The second one (Isto é Magazine, edition 1696, April 03rd, 2002, p. 31 to 34) is taken as a differentiated parameter, for comparison to the analysis proposal for the first report.
