Abstract: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a frequent pathology among HTLV-I+ individuals being capable of severely compromising the kidneys and bladder. Molecular characteristics of uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) from HTLV-I+ infected individuals are unknown. UPEC isolates from HTVL-I+ individuals, with and without clinical symptoms of myelopathy, were submitted to genetic typing seeking to infer bacterial diversity and potential virulence. 71 bacterial isolates were characterized according to random amplified polymorphic DNA and phylotypes. Phylotyping classified E. coli into four phylogenetic groups: A (18.3%), B1 (16.9%), B2 (39.4%), and D (25.3%) and 8 phylotypes according to the presence of the genetic sequences chuA, yjaA and the DNA fragment TSPE4.C2: (5.6%) and + (12.6%) in phylogroup A, + (7.0%) and ++ (9.8%) in B1, +++ (32.3%) and ++ (7.0%) in B2, + (15.4%) and ++ (9.8%) in D. The B2 phylogroup was the most prevalent among HTLV associated myelopathy and asymptomatic individuals. RAPD-PCR typing revealed a high degree of bacterial polymorphism indicating a non-clonal origin. Genotypes were not found to be distributed according to clinical status or epidemiological features. Our results lead us to suggest that the neurological impairment in HTLV-I+ individuals can be a risk factor for urinary infections due E. coli which are caused by distinct bacterial lineages.

Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Fonoaudiologia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-80342007000400011
Abstract: purpose: to investigate the efficiency of a formal auditory training program in hearing aid wearers during the acclimatization period. methods: eighteen subjects (mean age of 71.38 years old), male and female, binaural intra-aural hearing aid users for one week participated in the study. experimental (with auditory training) and control (without training) groups were formed randomly. subjects in the experimental group have undergone a formal auditory training program organized in seven 50-minute sessions, once a week. evaluation procedures included speech recognition tests and a self-assessment questionnaire. these procedures were carried out before (1st evaluation) and after (2nd evaluation) the training for the experimental group and in the initial and final evaluation for the control group. results: in the experimental group, both the word recognition score (wrs) and the speech in noise test showed significantly improved results after the training (2nd evaluation). in the study of signal-to-noise ratio for sentence recognition in noise, there was a slight tendency (p-value near 0,05) of improvement in the evaluation after the training. it was also observed that for the experimental group the results in the 2nd evaluation have not revealed differences in comparison to the results of the control group in all tests. conclusion: it could be concluded that the aural rehabilitation program, including formal auditory training beneficiates the elderly in the period of hearing aids adaptation and also modifies the auditory behavior of these subjects.

Marques, Lúcia Helena Neves;Almeida, Sérgio José Alves de;Santos, Adriana Barbosa;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2004000300016
Abstract: the purpose of this study was to point out the effectiveness of prolonged video eeg monitoring (pvem) in the diagnosis of nonepileptic seizures (nes) as well as to estimate its prevalence in a reference center of epilepsy (ep). a sample of 47 patients with the diagnosis of nes with spontaneous or provoked seizures was observed. a protocol with the clinical history and semiology of seizures was analyzed; fisher's exact test and cluster analysis were used for statistical observation. the results showed a prevalence of 10% of nes; more prevalence in females (63.8%); the crises were spontaneous in 57% of the patients. the mean age was 32.5 ± 11 years and the most frequent semiological sign was apparent sleep (82.2%). either ep or nes was observed in 9% of the patients. there were three groups according to the cluster analysis: hypermotor nes of the extremities with tonus alteration; nes with automatism; and axial nes with eye movements. in conclusion, the study of clinical semiology of nes during the pvem provides both this nosological entity and the differential ep diagnoses while the provocative test helps to obtain the seizures.

Abstract: the in vitro propagation of the banana is accomplished to produce large quantities of seedlings free from diseases. micropropagation process can be optimized changing the method, but also considering plantlet quality. the objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of the flask size and of the growth medium consistence on the multiplication rate and on the initial plantlet development of in vitro propagated 'ma??' banana tree. starting from stem apexes, four subcultures were accomplished (s2, s3, s4 and s5) in ms medium modified with the half of the concentration of the macronutrients, added of 30g l-1 of sucrose, 2.5mg l-1 of bap (6-benzylaminopurine) in factorial design 2x2: two types of growth media (semi solid by addition of 1.6g l-1 phytagel? and stationary liquid), and two flask sizes (250 and 500ml). plantlets were induced in vitro rooting and acclimatization in greenhouse using trays with 72 cells and later grown in 17x18cm polypropylene bags. cultivation in liquid medium bottle of 500ml can be successfully adopted for propagation of 'ma??' banana plantlets because it had larger multiplication rate (25.27), better adaptation in the initial stage of acclimatization and similar performance to the other treatments after 60 days of cultivation in the bags.

Materials Research , 2004,
Abstract: Sources that can lead to deterioration of steam superheater tubes of a high pressure boiler were studied by a stress analysis, focused on internal pressure and temperature experienced by the material at real operating conditions. Loss of flame control, internal deposits and unexpected peak charge are factors that generate loads above the design limit of tube materials, which can be subjected to strain, buckling, cracks and finally rupture in service. To evaluate integrity and dependability of these components, the microstructure of selected samples along the superheater was studied by optical microscopy. Associated with this analysis, dimensional inspection, nondestructive testing, hardness measurement and deposit examination were made to determine the resultant material condition after twenty three years of operation.
