Impact of supervised physiotherapeutic pelvic floor exercises for treating female stress urinary incontinence

Abstract: context and objective: urinary incontinence is a public health problem that affects more than 200 million people worldwide. stress incontinence is the most prevalent type. pelvic floor muscle exercises have been used for treating it, although there is no consensus regarding their application. the aim of this study was to compare the results from treating female stress urinary incontinence with pelvic floor muscle exercises with or without physiotherapist supervision. design and setting: this was a randomized, prospective, controlled trial in the urogynecology and vaginal surgery sector, universidade federal de s?o paulo. methods: forty-four women were randomized to be treated for stress urinary incontinence with pelvic floor exercises for three consecutive months, into two groups: one with and the other without physiotherapist supervision. they were evaluated before and after treatment using a quality-of-life questionnaire, pad test, micturition diary and subjective evaluation. descriptive analysis was used to evaluate the population. the homogeneity of the two groups was evaluated using the kruskal-wallis and chi-squared tests. the success of the two groups after treatment was evaluated using the wilcoxon test. results: the supervised group showed statistically greater improvement in the pad test, micturition diary and quality of life than did the control group. in the subjective evaluation, only 23.8% of the control group patients were satised with their treatment. in the supervised group, 66.8% of patients did not want any other treatment. conclusion: supervised pelvic floor muscle exercises presented better results in objective and subjective evaluations than did unsupervised exercises.

Abstract: the author of the article analyzes some contributions of two of the most prominent linguists of the 20th century, ferdinand de saussure and noam chomsky, from a paradigmatic viewpoint of science. the main statement supported here is the evidence, yielded by these contributions, which confirms that linguistics is a mature science in the study of the structure of human language, and also, that there existed a scientific community whose origins account for what could be called the prehistory of linguistics. the author employs for this purpose an argumentative chain which is focused on some core concepts as proposed by thomas kuhn in his book la estructura de las revoluciones científicas.

Abstract: based on a work proposal found in fairclough (2003) for the textual analysis in social investigation, this study deals with the analysis of two decrees issued by the colombian national ministry of education during the stage of contextualization of a critical ethnographic study on the subjective experiences of the autonomy of the teaching and learning processes of a group of colombian college students, professors and administrators. the study also looks both at the lexical choices in the representation of the actors and the social processes included in the decrees and at the level of abstraction or specification of such choices. some of the findings show the absence of the professor (exclusion from the discourse by suppression) as well as the ratification of the student as an object, not as a subject of the educational action (prevalence of nominalization).

Abstract: En este artículo se analizan, desde una perspectiva paradigmática de las ciencias, algunas de las contribuciones de dos de los más importantes lingüistas del siglo XX, Ferdinand de Saussure y Noam Chomsky. La tesis central que se sustenta aquí es que existe evidencia proveniente de estos aportes a favor de la consolidación de la Lingüística como una ciencia madura en el estudio de la estructura del lenguaje humano, y de una comunidad científica, cuyos orígenes dan cuenta de lo que podría llamarse la prehistoria de la lingüística. Se recurre, para este propósito, a una línea de argumentación centrada en algunos conceptos propuestos por Thomas Kuhn en su libro La Estructura de las Revoluciones Científicas.

Abstract: A partir de una propuesta de trabajo en Fairclough (2003) para el análisis textual en la investigación social, se llevó a cabo el análisis de dos decretos promulgados por el Ministerio de Educación Nacional de Colombia en la etapa de contextualización de un estudio etnográfico crítico sobre las experiencias subjetivas acerca de la autonomía en los procesos de ense anza-aprendizaje de un grupo de estudiantes, profesores y directivos universitarios colombianos. Se analizaron las escogencias léxicas para la representación de los actores y procesos sociales involucrados en estos decretos, así como el grado de abstracción o especificación de tales escogencias, entre otros aspectos. Algunos de los hallazgos se refieren a la ausencia del maestro (exclusión en el discurso por supresión) así como la ratificación del estudiante como objeto y no sujeto de las acciones en el proceso educativo (predominio de la nominalización).

Abstract: Muitos trabalhos têm sido desenvolvidos a partir do item “onde”, dada a diversidade de usos que a ele s o atribuídos. Face a esse fato, deparamo-nos ainda com as discuss es acerca da classe gramatical na qual, tradicionalmente, insere-se o referido termo: os advérbios. Discutem-se aqui alguns pontos importantes sobre eles, como a defini o tradicional, as quest es históricas que permeiam essa conceitua o, os problemas associados a essa tradi o, além de serem apresentadas outras defini es que se pautam em estudos de caráter funcionalista. A partir desse esbo o, apresentamos a literatura relacionada ao onde, descrevendo a origem, as possíveis classifica es morfossintáticas (advérbio/pronome) e algumas acep es a ele atribuídas por diversos pesquisadores, a partir de pesquisas comcorpora de sincronias distintas. Owing to different uses assigned to the term, where has been the object of several studies. Investigations have also been made on issues with regard to its grammatical class, the adverbs, in which traditionally the term has been inserted. Important issues are raised on the adverbs, among which the traditional definition, the historical issues that pervade its concept, the problems associated with this tradition and other definitions based on functional studies. The literature related to the term where is provided, coupled to a description of its origin, its possible morphological and syntactical classifications (adverb/pronoun) and some stances attributed to it by researchers as from discussions with distinct synchronies corpora.
Dietary Knowledge, Behaviours and Attitudes of Students of Public School in a Northeastern City in Brazil  [PDF]

Abstract: This quasi-experimental intervention was conducted with 10- to 14-year-old students enrolled in public schools in Teresina, Brazil, to evaluate the effects of a nutritional education program on the students’ knowledge, behaviour and attitudes towards nutrition. The dietary attitudes were evaluated in terms of food tastes/preferences and food behaviours. The participants in the study included 126 students from four schools. Differences between before and after the intervention were found regarding knowledge about the “food pyramid”, “healthy eating” and “nutrients” (p < 0.05). There was reduction from 35% to 18.2% (p = 0.029) in the preference for unhealthy foods, such as greasy meats and processed foods. The students reported changes in their dietary behaviour in response to the intervention (p < 0.05). The educational model used in this study was shown to be effective for modifying the food and nutritional knowledge levels of the students and the associated dietary attitudes and practices.

Abstract: El texto ofrece información acerca del despliegue de la televisión digital en Brasil y su aceptación, y las posiciones de la prensa y de la sociedad civil sobre el tema. La propuesta es verificar y analizar las posiciones de los diversos grupos de presión en el contexto de la aprobación de la selección del estándar japonés, que culminó con la lentitud en la implantación de la TVD en Brasil, sin un previo y necesario debate político, ello dio lugar a cambios en el marco normativo nacional hasta el punto de ser incompatible con los medios de comunicación convergentes.

Abstract: Tuberculosis and the taeniasis-cysticercosis complex, typical cases of zoonosis, have great importance for public health, since they cause economic liabilities to the Brazilian beef production chain. They are actually a synonym of technical inadequateness in Good Production Practices. Both diseases have existed since ancient times and their occurrence should be controlled by basic sanitary measures. However, there is a significant neglect attitude by authorities of countries with high occurrence rates, or rather, tropical underdeveloped nations, to focus on public policies for the control and decrease of the prevalence and the occurrence of these diseases. Current review elucidates the epidemiological profile of the diseases and contributes towards the elucidation and establishment of measures ensuring control.
