Abstract: this paper describes a modeling procedure for tandem cold metal rolling, including the linearization step and system identification for control. the tandem cold rolling process is described by a mathematical model based on algebraic equations developed for control purposes and empirical relations. a state-space model is derived and detailed analyses in open loop are presented, concerning the sensitivity with regard to the variations in process parameters and results for the application of a new subspace identification method are compared with classical methodologies. therefore, this work intents to be a contribution for developments in new control strategies for tandem cold rolling process that offer the potential to reduce the design efforts, the commissioning time and maintenance in rolling mills. the preliminary results obtained with this model have shown reasonable agreement with operational data presented at literature for industrial cold rolling process.

Abstract: most studies in the literature regarding the uptake of micronutrients [zinc (zn), manganese (mn), iron (fe), copper (cu) and boron (b) accumulation] by sunflower are old. for this reason, this work is aimed to establish curves of sunflower micronutrient accumulation in tropical edaphoclimatic conditions. the experiment was conducted in field on rhodic eutrudox, located at the experimental farm of embrapa soja in londrina-pr, using the commercial hybrid brs 191. the experimental design was completely randomized, with four replicates. the experimental units consisted of 14 lines with a spacing of 0.70 meter between lines and 25.0 meters in length, with final density of 42,858 plants per hectare. plants samples were collected every 14 days after emergence. after each collection, plants were divided into petiole, leaf, stem, capitulum and achenes. they were dried until reaching constant weight. then, dry matter was weighed and the concentrations of zn, mn, fe, cu, and b were determined in the vegetal tissue. micronutrient uptake occurred faster in the phase initiated 42 days after emergence (dae). iron was the most absorbed micronutrient, accumulating higher amounts in the achenes as well as in relation to the total absorbed. fe, mn, zn, b and cu concentrations were 38.06, 19.68, 9.20, 8,62 and 4.27 mg plant-1, respectively.

Abstract: the present study aims to quantify basic parameters for the transport and retention of metal ions in contention barrier systems. a synthetic leachate with ph 1 and known concentrations of ions chromium, cadmium and copper was used. sorption and molecular diffusion experiments were carried out in compacted soil, soil mixture with 10% sodium bentonite and compacted soil overlaid with geomembrane. it was implemented in the program mphmtp (multi phase heat and mass transfer program) where the equations describe ion behavior under adjusted parameters obtained from sorption and diffusion tests. the geomembrane’s presence minimizes ion migration through a diffusive process, and eliminates the need for the soil sorption capacity. but the soil with the bentonite option proved to be the most predominant specific alternative due to its cadmium sorption capacity.

Abstract: the aim of this research about the national guard uniforms was to examine the use of this apparel in the organization and functioning of a military force. an initial step in order to study the apparel as a material vector of the social production and reproduction. it is not, therefore, from the study of an artefact, but from its functions, pragmatic, diacritical and symbolic, means to analyse bigger problems regarding organization, development and change in the societies.

Comparison of methods for the detection of biofilm production in coagulase-negative staphylococci

Abstract: Among the 100 CNS isolates studied, 82% tested positive by PCR, 82% by the tube test, 81% by the TCP assay, and 73% by the CRA method. Using PCR as a reference, the tube test showed the best correlation with detection of the ica genes, presenting high sensitivity and specificity. The tube adherence test can be indicated for the routine detection of biofilm production in CNS because of its easy application and low cost and because it guarantees reliable results with excellent sensitivity and specificity.Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) are the microorganisms most frequently involved in nosocomial infections among neonates. These infections are generally associated with the use of catheters and other medical devices [1]. The capacity to adhere to polymer surfaces and consequent biofilm production are the main virulence factors of CNS, especially S. epidermidis, the most frequently isolated species. The biofilm protects CNS against the action of antibiotics administered for the treatment of these infections and also against the patient's immune system. Removal of the foreign body is often necessary for cure [2,3]. In this respect, CNS infections seem to be related to the health condition of the patient and to the production of this extracellular polysaccharide [4,5].The biofilm consists of layers of cell clusters embedded in a matrix of extracellular polysaccharide, called polysaccharide intercellular adhesin (PIA), which consists of β-1,6-N-acetylglycosamine and is synthesized by N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase [6]. PIA is involved in cell-cell adhesion and is essential for biofilm production by CNS, which is observed in most clinical strains of S. epidermidis [7,8].The synthesis of PIA is mediated by the products of the chromosomal ica gene (intercellular adhesion), which are organized in an operon structure. This operon contains the icaADBC genes, in addition to the icaR gene which exerts a regulatory function and is transcribed in the opposite direction. Once t

Abstract: Over the past century, chemical and pharmaceutical industries have made substantial strides in the development of new pharmaceuticals for a range of human diseases. Discovering and developing new drugs are part of a costly process that involves not only the search for new drug candidates, but also the performance of clinical trials. It is not uncommon to find reports of costs reaching US$ 500 million—and even US$ 1 billion—engaging multidisciplinary teams for periods of 10 or 15 years. To a large extent, these costs are borne by consumers in richer countries. In contrast, diseases that predominantly affect residents of poorer nations tend to be left out of the modern process of drug discovery. Moreover, most of the world population stricken by these illnesses is incapable of supporting the costs involved in developing the drugs they need. Because these infirmities, with few exceptions, have been ignored by those in charge of research programs, both in the public and private sectors, they have been referred to as neglected diseases. On its website, the World Health Organization categorizes 14 health conditions as “tropical diseases,”.......................
