Toxic thermoresistant metabolites of Fusarium oxysporum are capable of inducing histopathological alterations in Wistar rats
Hernandes, L;Marangon, AV;Salci, T;Svidzinski, TIE;
Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins including Tropical Diseases , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-91992012000200003
Abstract: the genus fusarium is known to produce mycotoxins that cause fusariosis in plants, animals and humans. mycotoxins are among the virulence factors of this genus. metabolic extracts of fusarium oxysporum, isolated from a patient with onychomycosis and sterilized by filtration or autoclave, were inoculated intradermally into wistar rats at concentrations of 0.25, 0.5 and 1 μg/μl, and the effects on their tegument were observed at 24 and 72 hours. after histological procedures and staining by hematoxylineosin, the sections were studied for their inflammatory-reaction intensity and for evidence of injury and tissue distortion. inflammatory reactions in the dermis and the subcutaneous tissue were observed at all concentrations of the inoculated extract tested. there was a significant influx of neutrophils, mastocytes and lymphocytes, as well as a large quantity of macrophages. apoptotic bodies and hyperemic blood vessels were observed. this reaction was directly related to the extract concentration, and was most intense in animals that received the 1 mg/μl dose. the maximum peak was observed at 24 hours. the autoclaved metabolic extract produced the same effects as the untreated one, indicating the presence of heat-resistant metabolites. in conclusion, the metabolic extracts obtained from sterilized culture filtrates of f. oxysporum are capable of inducing an inflammatory response within 24 hours in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue of rats.
Nutritive value of red vine husks and pips for sheep
AV Ferreira
South African Journal of Animal Science , 2004,
Abstract: The potential of red vine husks and pips as a component of animal feed was investigated. Twenty-five Dohne Merino ram lambs (mean live weight + s.d. = 41.4 + 2.3 kg) were used. A completely randomised design was used and the animals were assigned to five diets including 0, 12.5, 25.0, 37.5 and 50% vine husks and pips together with pelleted lucerne hay, respectively. The voluntary intake of feed and water were not negatively influenced by the percentage vine husks and pips included in the diet. The digestibility of the crude protein, neutral detergent fibre and acid detergent fibre decreased significantly, while the dry matter digestibility showed a strong tendency towards a lower digestibility as the percentage vine husks and pips increased in the diet. According to the plasma metabolites, no toxic effects were evident in this study. South African Journal of Animal Science Supp 2 2004: 23-35
Efecto del desmane y de la modalidad de cosecha sobre las características y producción de racimos de plátano tipo Francés FHIA-21
Calvo, AV.
Tropicultura , 2010,
Abstract: Two experiments of dehandig intensity (DI) removing 0, 1 or 2 true hands were done in the first generation of FHIA-21 plantain in the Caribbean of Costa Rica during year 2006. One experiment was harvest using the modality (HM) of pre-established age (A) of the bunch and the other considering the pre-established age of the bunch in combination with fruit thickness (AT). Bunch characteristics were measured at harvest. Bunch weight and its fruit number decreased as DI increased in both HM (A: P< 0.0081; AT: P< 0.0067). The number of effective leaves and days from dehanding to harvest did not vary (P> 0.3174) with DI nor with HM. Central fruit thickness of the inner row differed among DI in the majority of A-HM hands (P< 0.0557) and only in the three first hands of seven bunch hands from AT-HM (P< 0.0153). When harvest was performed through A-HM, the central fruit length of the inner row was larger with the DI but the difference was large enough to be significant (P< 0.0505) in the third and five hands in bunches of six hands. For ATHM no differences (P> 0.1398) were observed. Hand conformation variables did not differ among DI for all hands from AT-HM (P> 0.0835) and for the majority of those hands in A-HM (P> 0.1440). In this experimental conditions HM determine bunch response to DI.
Reviewing disease burden among rural Indian women
Ramanakumar AV
Online Journal of Health & Allied Sciences , 2004,
Abstract: The disease burden of rural Indian women is reviewed by utilizing the data from the 'Survey of Causes of Death (rural)' annual reports of Registrar General of India supplemented with National family health survey (NFHS-II). The review indicates that bronchitis and asthma are the leading causes while prematurity and heart attacks are second and third respectively. Most of the maternal deaths are concentrated in the age group 20-24 and bleeding is the main cause of maternal death. Tuberculosis of the lungs, malaria and burns are also important causes of death in the early reproductive ages. Rate of suicide, burn, and anaemia diminishes with age. Though nationwide health plans have succeeded in reducing the fatality of women's diseases to a entrain extent, there is however, a great need for improved and effective area-specific health programs to achieve the desired goals.
Itinerário percorrido pelas mulheres na descoberta do cancer
Salci, Maria Aparecida;Marcon, Sonia Silva;
Escola Anna Nery , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-81452009000300015
Abstract: this study intends to reveal the journey experienced by women in the process of facing a cancer diagnosis. symbolic interactionism and grounded theory were used as theoretical-methodological strategies. twenty individuals took part in the study - 10 female cancer bearers and their respective significant others. the results are described starting from the moment they experience their first perceptions of the physiologic changes in their bodies, through the search for professional help, to the acknowledgement of a cancer diagnosis. the given itinerary presents aspects of the patients' reality prior to the diagnosis, and emphasizes the importance of professionals giving more credence to the complaints of patients who seek them if the patient made an appointment, it is because that person is concerned. this attitude can promote the early identification of the problem, and consequently guarantee a better prognosis and quality of life.

Sales, Catarina Aparecida;Molina, Maria Aparecida Salci;
Revista Brasileira de Enfermagem , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-71672004000600018
Abstract: the aim of this study was to reveal the feelings of women affected with breast neoplasia in their family environment. its methodological strategy is based on the phenomenological approach, a method that seeks to reveal the phenomenon, that is, that which shows itself to itself, considering the language of the person who experiences it. when questioned about their experience with cancer, women expressed their view, their feelings and experiences with the disease. two different situations arose from the analyzed speeches: their experience with cancer and the experience of their family members after the diagnosis of cancer. the study led us to realize that each person reacts differently to his/her vicissitudes in life, revealing how painful or pleasurable the events of life are.
Enfrentamento do cancer em família
Salci, Maria Aparecida;Marcon, Sonia Silva;
Texto & Contexto - Enfermagem , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-07072011000500023
Abstract: the objective of this study was to build a theoretical framework on the changes faced on a family context after cancer is diagnosed in women. this qualitative study used symbolic interactionism as a theoretical reference and the grounded theory as a methodological reference. data from twenty subjects (ten women with cancer and their families) was collected from march to november of 2005. this study allows us to understand that this phenomenon consists of three distinct, yet interrelated, processes: the disease diagnosis, changes after diagnosis, and life with cancer. the results permit a clear visualization that both the individual and their families need care provided by a multidisciplinary team. such a team will have to be able to identify these changes and act within several aspects which accompany the disease in all these processes

Salci, Maria Aparecida;Marcon, Sonia Silva;
Texto & Contexto - Enfermagem , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-07072008000300016
Abstract: this study aimed to identify how women experience the need to receive care after being diagnosed with cancer. the theoretical-methodological strategies utilized were symbolic interacting and the grounded theory. data was collected from march to november of 2005, using 20 subjects. ten of these were women with cancer in different stages of treatment and their respective relatives, who composed three sample groups. it was identified that they go from caretakers from those who are taken care of. for some of them, it was a good experience; while for others, being taken care of was quite uncomfortable. the care received was related to personal hygiene, feeding, domestic tasks, transportation, child care, company, and psychological support. even physically weakened and in need of care, they did not abandon their caretaker role as they were concerned with the emotional state of their family members.
A convivência com o fantasma do cancer
Salci, Maria Aparecida;Marcon, Sonia Silva;
Revista Gaúcha de Enfermagem , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1983-14472010000100003
Abstract: the purpose of this study is to understand how women and their families live with the daily confrontation of cancer after the end of the treatment. symbolic interactionism and data theory were used as a theoretical and methodological framework. data were collected from march to november 2005, from twenty subjects, with ten women suffering from cancer and their relatives divided into three sample groups. to live with cancer triggers a variety of emotions, such as the fear that one day the disease will return. this makes laboratory tests after treatment considerably stressful. to live with cancer means worrying about the disease and seeking strategies to cope with it. the study allows us to understand this situation and rethink some of the caring strategies.

Maria Aparecida Salci,Sonia Silva Marcon
Texto & Contexto - Enfermagem , 2011,
