An open-system approach to medical professionalism: a controversy within the sociology of professions
Correia, Tiago;
Interface - Comunica??o, Saúde, Educa??o , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-32832011000300013
Abstract: this article focuses on a specific debate within theories of professions. despite different trends, there has been difficulty in theorizing some dimensions of the dominant perspectives because of predominant institutional attention. the aim here was to reinforce the debate with complementary conceptualization of professionalism and, consequently, to foster new understandings of professional relationships. the argument lies in shifting the analytical level from the professions to professionals, as a basic step in conceptualizing individual action within professional contexts. this concern becomes increasingly important as the professional discretion structurally held by individuals becomes greater, since the ability to choose leads more explicitly to internal differentiation of professions. systemic influence is felt given that social structures are intrinsically involved in actions, which represent exteriorizations of individually internalized processes. consequently, it becomes necessary to consider the reasons for behaviors and the meanings individually conferred on professional dimensions.
Natalidade e amor mundi: sobre a rela??o entre educa??o e política em Hannah Arendt
Correia, Adriano;
Educa??o e Pesquisa , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-97022010000300011
Abstract: in the present article we want to examine the articulations between hannah arendt's essay "the crisis in education" and central themes of her political thought, such as natality, the foreigner in the world condition, the love of the world (amor mundi), the political action, and the crisis of the modern era. the central objective here is, on the one hand, to emphasize how much that time-situated essay integrates harmoniously within her political thinking and, on the other hand, to highlight the classical vigor of her analysis. to hannah arendt, the essence of education is natality, that is, the fact that new individuals constantly arrive into the world as foreigners, to whom the invitation to feel at home must be made. theses foreigners in a world in constant change are capable of initiating new events, without which the very preservation of the world would be in question. the education of youngsters must deal with the paradox of acquainting the newcomers with the old world that precedes them, without at the same time accommodating them entirely to the point that the novelty of their appearance would be suffocated, putting at risk the preservation of the world itself, which requires constant zeal and renovation. notwithstanding the difficulty of mediation, arendt believes that education must be, first and foremost, guided by the responsibility for the world, which translates both into its introduction to the newcomers and into the preservation of novelty in them.

Los tratados silogísticos de Boecio: sus fuentes, historia e influencia en la cristiandad latina
Teología y vida , 2007, DOI: 10.4067/S0049-34492007000200002
Abstract: in this article, the author describes the contents of a treatise on aristotelian logic, written by boethius in the sixth century a.d., titled in our modern editions as de syllogismo categórico (dsc). it is possible to show, through the contents: (i) the importance of this treatise for the transmission process of aristotle's logic to the latin medieval period; (ii) its relation to another, similar monographic treatise, titled by modern criticism as introductio ad syllogismos categóricos (isc) and its thematic relation to dsc; (iii) the most probable sources of both treaties; and, finally (iv), its influence upon the latin medieval period. the hypothesis that the present article defends is that the logical contents of this treatise, in particular the classification of the categorical propositions, contained in the heart of the dsc, give not only the thematic object to the treatise, but also argumentative coherence and unity. the study of this classification, especially, permits one to demonstrate the unity of dsc and, in particular, that the second book of dsc is genuine-not spurious as was claimed, not long ago, by the investigators murari and mckinlay. in addition, this same classification allows one to appreciate its difference from isc, by the fact that this latter treatise possesses a classification that is different from that of dsc. the basis of the proposed hypothesis is found in that the aforementioned classification is an attempt to generate, from the propositional elements, the principal logical operations defined by aristotle in his writings on logic, a matter that, in de rijk's revision (1964), was not entirely established
