Hierarchical Minimization of Total Completion Time and Number of Tardy Jobs Criteria

Abstract: In this study, the single machine bicriteria scheduling problem of hierarchically minimizing the total completion time of jobs (Ctot) and number of tardy jobs (NT) with release time was explored. Two types of hierarchical minimization models (the case of the total completion time criterion being more important than the number of tardy jobs criterion and the case of the number of tardy jobs criterion being more important than the total completion time criterion) were discussed. Three heuristics (HR4, HR5 and HR6) selected from the literature were used to test the models.
Utility of Meta-Heuristics for Solving Scheduling Problems

Abstract: Meta-heuristics, are increasingly being applied by many researchers to solve scheduling problems. In this study, we discuss 5 unique characteristics of meta-heuristics that have endeared them to researchers. These are: ability to escape local optima, obtain better solution quality, solve larger instances of problems, suitable for multi-objective scheduling problems and have wide applicability.

Abstract: In this study, the problem of simultaneously minimizing the total completion time and number of tardy jobs with release dates on a single machine is investigated. Three heuristics (called HR4, HR5 and HR6) were proposed for the bicriteria problem and were compared with the branch and bound (BB) procedure in order to evaluate effectiveness. Computational experiments, focusing on both the effectiveness (a measure of the closeness of the value of the performance measure) and efficiency (a measure of the execution time or speed) of the solution methods, were presented.
The Total Completion Time: An Important Performance Measure in Scheduling

Abstract: Given the problem of scheduling n jobs with release dates on a single machine, we prove that any solution method that minimizes the total completion time (Ctot) also minimizes total flow time (Ftot), total lateness (Ltot), average completion time (Cavg), average flow time (Favg) and average lateness (Lavg). Two approaches (Analytical and Experimental approaches) were adopted to prove this conjecture.

Abstract: ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Research on maintenance performance is seemingly well advanced in many domains. Traditional measures such as productivity, efficiency and effectiveness have many limitations that make them less applicable in today’s complex industrial environments; they do not provide a balanced viewpoint of maintenance system performance when treated in isolation. This paper presents a current challenge in the field of maintenance performance measurement (MPM) namely the problems associated with holistic measures using the nominal group technique (NGT). It outlines a measurement scheme that aids the evaluation of the maintenance function and proposes a template for developing a maintenance performance index given a set of measures. The template helps in minimising the shortcomings usually brought about by implicit redundancies and overemphasis of the component measures. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Daar is getuienis dat navorsing oor die effektiwiteit van instandhouding vooruitgaan. Bekende maatstawe soos produktiwiteit, rendement en effektiwiteit skiet tekort vir hedendaagse komplekse industri le omgewings omdat hulle in isolasie nie 'n gebalanseerde beeld van instandhoudingsvertoning gee nie. Hierdie navorsing behandel die meting van instandhoudingsvertoning op 'n holistiese wyse deur gebruik te maak van die nominale groeptegniek. Dit beskryf 'n meetstelsel vir die bepaling van 'n indeks vir instandhoudingsvertoning. Tekortkominge wat voortspruit as gevolg van implisiete oortolligheid en oorbeklemtoning van komponentwaardes word geminimiseer by wyse van vereenvoudiging.

Abstract: ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Many productivity models evaluate either the input or the output performances using standalone techniques. This sometimes gives divergent views of the same system’s results. The work reported in this article, which simultaneously evaluated productivity from both orientations, was applied on real life data. The results showed losses in productivity (–2%) and price recovery (–8%) for the outputs; the inputs showed productivity gain (145%) but price recovery loss (–63%). These imply losses in product performances but a productivity gain in inputs. The loss in the price recovery of inputs indicates a problem in the pricing policy. This model is applicable in product diversification. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die meeste produktiwiteitsmodelle evalueer of die inset- of die uitsetverrigting deur gebruik te maak van ge soleerde tegnieke. Dit lei soms tot uiteenlopende perspektiewe van dieselfde sisteem se verrigting. Hierdie artikel evalueer verrigting uit beide perspektiewe en gebruik ware data. Die resultate toon ‘n afname in produktiwiteit (-2%) en prysherwinning (-8%) vir die uitsette. Die insette toon ‘n toename in produktiwiteit (145%), maar ‘n afname in prysherwinning (-63%). Dit impliseer ‘n afname in produkverrigting, maar ‘n produktiwiteitstoename in insette. Die afname in die prysherwinning van insette dui op ‘n problem in die prysvasstellingbeleid. Hierdie model is geskik vir produkdiversifikasie.
An Economic Lot Size Model with Shortages and Inflation

Abstract: Inflation is a plague, which characterized the economy of many developing countries especially, in the current global economic meltdown. This effect influenced cases of both explainable and unexplainable shortages in production inventory. In this study, the management of inventory under twin limiting situations of inflation and shortages were considered. Also, presented was a model for determination of economic lot size, which includes the two conditions, time value of money and comparative study of corresponding cost implications using numerical example to illustrate the developed model.
Minimizing Maximum Stretch on A Single Machine with Release Dates

Abstract: This paper considers the scheduling problem of minimizing the maximum stretch on a single machine with release dates. The need to give importance to short jobs in interactive environments where jobs with long and short processing times are involved creates a Scheduling problem. Also this problem, is by nature NP-Hard (difficult to achieve optimal solutions in good time).Hence, the John Gbeminiyi Oyewole 1(JGO1) heuristic was developed to solve this problem. JGO1 heuristic and two other solution methods selected from the literature (First in First out (FIFO) and Branch and Bound (BB)) were tested on 1400 randomly generated problems. Twenty Eight different problem sizes ranging from 3 to 500 jobs and 50 problem instances under each problem size were generated. Performance evaluation was based on effectiveness and efficiency of the solution methods. Experimental results based on effectiveness show that JGO1 performed competitively with the BB method (BB not significantly different from JGO1 at 5% level), but far better than FIFO for 3 to 500 problem sizes. However, the JGO1 achieved a lesser mean best-result than the BB method. Based on efficiency, JGO1 and FIFO were faster than the BB method but not significantly different from each other at 5% level.
