Competitive ability of corn in coexistence with goosegrass Habilidade competitiva de milho em convivência com capim-pé-de-galinha

Abstract: Competition between plants is one of the main interferences that occurs in agricultural systems and accounts for significant crop yield reductions. The aim of this study was to assess the competitive ability of corn in coexistence with the weed species Eleusine indica. The experiments were conducted in a greenhouse, in the growing season 2010/2011, and were arranged in a completely randomized design with four replications. The experimental units consisted of plastic pots with a volumetric capacity of 8 L. Treatments were arranged in a replacement series with five proportions of corn plants and weed: 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100, respectively, with a constant population of eight plants per pot, at the end of each treatment. The competitiveness analysis was conducted through diagrams applied to the replacement series experiment and competitiveness index, and the variables evaluated were root, shoot, and total dry mass, and plant height. When in equal proportions, corn showed competitive ability equivalent to goosegrass in relation to the variables shoot, root, and total dry mass. Goosegrass was more competitive than the crop in relation to plant height. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar a habilidade competitiva de milho em convivência com capim-pé-de-galinha (Eleusine indica). O experimento foi realizado em casa de vegeta o, na esta o de crescimento 2010/2011, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com quatro repeti es. As unidades experimentais consistiram de vasos plásticos com capacidade volumétrica de 8 L. Os tratamentos foram arranjados em série de substitui o, com cinco propor es de plantas de milho e da planta daninha: 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 e 0:100, respectivamente, com popula o final constante de oito plantas por vaso. A análise da competitividade foi realizada por meio de diagramas aplicados a experimentos substitutivos e índices de competitividade. As variáveis analisadas foram massa seca da parte aérea, da raiz e total e estatura de plantas. Quando em propor es iguais, o milho apresentou habilidade competitiva equivalente à do capim-pé-de-galinha em rela o às variáveis massa seca da parte aérea, da raiz e total. O capim-pé-de-galinha foi mais competitivo que a cultura em rela o à estatura de plantas.
A survey of odonate assemblages associated with selected wetland localities in southern Sri Lanka

Abstract: The dragonflies and damselflies are a major insect group (Class Insecta; Order Odonata) associated with water courses. Odonate assemblages with reference to their habitat characters have not been widely studied in Sri Lanka. We have investigated odonate assemblages for a period of three months in selected localities in southern Sri Lanka with reference to the habitat characters. Bundala and Embillakala lagoons in Bundala National Park (A Ramsar wetland in Sri Lanka), “Kirala Kele” Eco-tourism Zone-Matara, Bandaththara marshland system-Matara, “Kirala Kele” Biological Garden-Ambalanthota and Kosgahadola stream which belongs to Mulatiyana Rain forest reserve were selected as study sites since these sites are important in conservation of biodiversity. A total of 28 species were identified during the study period. Our data reveals odonate assemblages specific to the studied habitats such as bushlands, marshlands, lagoons, flowing water bodies, stagnant water bodies and vegetation type (wet zone and dry zone). These data will be useful in future studies and conservation of biodiversity in the studied habitats.
Effects of exercise training on atrophy gene expression in skeletal muscle of mice with chronic allergic lung inflammation

Abstract: we evaluated the effects of chronic allergic airway inflammation and of treadmill training (12 weeks) of low and moderate intensity on muscle fiber cross-sectional area and mrna levels of atrogin-1 and murf1 in the mouse tibialis anterior muscle. six 4-month-old male balb/c mice (28.5 ± 0.8 g) per group were examined: 1) control, non-sensitized and non-trained (c); 2) ovalbumin sensitized (oa, 20 μg per mouse); 3) non-sensitized and trained at 50% maximum speed _ low intensity (pt50%); 4) non-sensitized and trained at 75% maximum speed _ moderate intensity (pt75%); 5) oa-sensitized and trained at 50% (oa+pt50%), 6) oa-sensitized and trained at 75% (oa+pt75%). there was no difference in muscle fiber cross-sectional area among groups and no difference in atrogin-1 and murf1 expression between c and oa groups. all exercised groups showed significantly decreased expression of atrogin-1 compared to c (1.01 ± 0.2-fold): pt50% = 0.71 ± 0.12-fold; oa+pt50% = 0.74 ± 0.03-fold; pt75% = 0.71 ± 0.09-fold; oa+pt75% = 0.74 ± 0.09-fold. similarly significant results were obtained regarding murf1 gene expression compared to c (1.01 ± 0.23-fold): pt50% = 0.53 ± 0.20-fold; oa+pt50% = 0.55 ± 0.11-fold; pt75% = 0.35 ± 0.15-fold; oa+pt75% = 0.37 ± 0.08-fold. a short period of oa did not induce skeletal muscle atrophy in the mouse tibialis anterior muscle and aerobic training at low and moderate intensity negatively regulates the atrophy pathway in skeletal muscle of healthy mice or mice with allergic lung inflammation.

Abstract: two new species of the genus brueelia kéler, 1936 are described of two species in the genus phrygilus cabanis, 1844 from punitaqui, coquimbo, iv región, chile: phrygilus gayi (gervais, 1834) and p. fruticeti (kittlitz, 1833). descriptions were made in a comparative form, adding comments on their relatives, as well as an account of all brueelia species known to infest south american emberizine finches.

Abstract: chromosomal studies were carried out on a population of the fish hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus (jeju) from prata river in the s?o francisco river basin, minas gerais, brazil using conventional giemsa staining, c-banding, silver nitrate nucleolar organizer region (ag-nor) staining and fluorescent in situ hybridization (fish) with 18s and 5s rdna probes. we found a high degree of inter- and intra-individual variability with the identification of 2n = 50, 2n = 51 and 2n = 52 karyotypes at nearly the same frequency within the population. intra-individual variation in chromosomal morphology and, consequently, karyotype formulae was also observed, chiefly in the specimens with 2n = 50 and 2n = 52 chromosomes. ag-nors and 18s rdna sites also showed numerical and chromosomal variation similar to that found for the 5s rdna sites. some putative hypotheses are considered in order to explain these results.

Abstract: The present study was conducted to evaluate the production and reproduction performance of Mehsana goats and growth performance of their offspring under farm condition. Data pertaining to growth traits of 381 Mehsana kids born during the years 2007 to 2010 and production and reproduction performance of does maintained at Sheep Goat Research Station, Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University, Sardarkrushinagar, India were analyzed. The overall means for body weight at birth, weaning (3 months), 6 months, 9 months and 12 months were observed to be 2.81 ± 0.02, 9.92 ± 0.11, 13.24 ± 0.16, 15.70 ± 0.21, and 19.23 ± 0.24 kg, respectively, whereas, daily weight gain (gm) from birth to weaning (ADG-I) and weaning to six months (ADG-II)were found to be 76.91 ± 1.12 and 40.05 ± 1.35 gm, respectively. The type of birth revealed better growth in kids born as single up to weaning, however, its reverse was true for kids born as twins which had comparatively higher weight gain during post weaning period. The overall means for production and reproduction performance traits, viz., total lactation milk yield, peak yield, days to attain peak yield, lactation length, dry period, weight at first mating, age at first service, service period, weight at first kidding, gestation period, age at first kidding, weight at kidding and kidding interval were estimated to be 70.23 ± 1.37 kg, 0.580 ± 0.01 kg, 156.23 ± 3.72 days, 224.00 ± 4.19 days, 112.31 ± 6.64 days, 26.00 ± 0.50 kg, 560.43 ± 20.83 days, 209.66 ± 2.90 days, 28.19 ± 0.45 kg, 148.97 ± 0.28 days, 716.52 ± 19.01 days, 31.58 ± 0.29 kg and 364.40 ± 4.32 days, respectively. The overall means for Fat, SNF and Protein contents in the goat milk were 3.17 ± 0.02 %, 8.32 ± 0.01 % and 3.13 ± 0.01 %, respectively.

Abstract: purpose. in the present study we evaluated the morphology of left ventricular cardiomyocytes of albino rats during pregnancy and puerperium by means of transmission electron microscopy. methods. once pregnancy was confirmed, 77 rats were randomly divided in two groups, respectively, gestation (g) and puerperium ( p). the animals of the gestation group were divided into four subgroups, according to gestational age: 1st (g-a), 7th (g-b), 14 th (g-c) and 21 st (g-d) days of pregnancy. the group defined as puerperium was divided into three subgroups: 7 th (p-a), 14 th (p-b) and 21 st (p-c) days of puerperium. in the end of each established period, the animals were sacrificed and fragments of the medium third of the left ventricle were resected and routinely prepared for electron microscopy analysis. results. the results obtained with transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed a gradative increase of the cardiomyocytes during pregnancy (increase of myofibrils, which are permeated by numerous mitochondria at the end of gestation). the blood capillary wall showed progressive thinning, with an increase of pynocytotic vesicles in endothelial cells, and intense sarcolemal folding at t- tubule level (capillary tunnels). in the puerperium group, there is a progressive regression in these alterations returning to pre-gestational level at the end of the puerperium cycle. these findings indicate the occurrence of hypertrophy of cardiomyocytes during pregnancy. conclusion. the findings indicate the occurrence of hypertrophy of cardiomyocytes during pregnancy.
