GRIFFA, S.,RIBOTTA, A,LUNA, C,BOLLATI, G
RIA : Revista de Investigaciones Agropecuarias , 2011,
Abstract: In searching for new cultivars that are better adapted to edapho-climatic constraints existing in northwestern Argentina, mainly drought and salinity stress, a hybrid of buffelgrass (Cenchrus ciliaris L.) named Lucero INTA PEMAN was obtained by controlled crosses at the Instituto de Fitopatología y Fisiología Vegetal, INTA. The objective was to morphologically evaluate and compare Cenchrus ciliaris cv Lucero with Texas-4464, Biloela and Molopo cultivars in Dean Funes (North of the Province of Córdoba, Argentina) under drought field conditions using a randomized complete block design with three replications in two crop cycles (2006/2007 and 2007/2008) considering one-year plant and re-growth as ontogenic stages of the plant, respectively. Thirteen morphological characters were analyzed by ANOVA and DGC testing (p <0.05). Although most of the thirteen morphological characters evaluated showed decreased re-growth over one-year plants, Lucero was least affected by low water availability, showed highest values for seed production components in both ontogenic stages and was superior to Texas-4464 in biomass production characters and to Biloela and Molopo cultivars in most of them. Lucero showed a promising and considerable forage value for drought-affected regions, such as northwestern Argentina.

Agriscientia , 2008,
Abstract: gliadins are a group of wheat proteins that play a major role in gluten development since they account for net viscosity. despite this fact, gliadins have not been studied as deeply as glutenins because of their unusual solubility properties and their high hydrophobicity. the objectives of this work were to study the gliadin profile of argentinean wheats comprising a broad quality range by means of capillary electrophoresis and to assess the suitability of this technique for wheat cultivar discrimination. for this purpose, chemical compositions of twelve wheat cultivars belonging to different quality groups were determined. besides, flour quality was assessed and wheat gliadins were extracted and analyzed by capillary electrophoresis. the results obtained corroborate the potential of free zone capillary electrophoresis for wheat gliadin separation. additionally, only small amounts of sample are required and sample preparation is simple. moreover, this technique involves straightforward protocols for capillary column cleaning and maintenance. these factors enable many of sample analyses in a relatively short time. suitability of free zone capillary electrophoresis for cultivar discrimination based on gliadin profile was demonstrated, since both qualitative and quantitative differences among protein electrophoresis patterns were found. these distinctions allowed differentiation among several genotypes.

Agriscientia , 2008,
Abstract: aim: this article has the objective of contributing to studies on mortality from violent causes in latin america through a comparative analysis of recent patterns and trends in deaths from external causes in three regional urban contexts. methods: a descriptive study from secondary sources is presented, using vital statistics from cordoba (argentina), campinas (brazil) and medellin (colombia) during three different periods between 1980 and 2005. the following subgroups of external causes are studied: homicides by firearms and other weapons, traffic accidents, and suicides and deaths with unspecified intentions. the data was disaggregated by age and sex, with rates calculated for the medians of the next three census years. results: the levels for medellin are significantly higher than those seen in campinas and cordoba for all external causes studied. young men constitute the group with the highest mortality. the levels in campinas are twice those seen in cordoba, especially in homicides and traffic accidents, but the suicide rates of cordoba are double those in campinas. for medellin the rates were highest around 1990, unlike the two other cities where the trend grew between 1980 and 2000 and declined between 2001 and 2005. conclusions: the availability of quality data on mortality allows comparisons among the populations studied. when comparing mortality from external causes, considerable differences in the levels and trends can be seen, but there are fewer differences observed on the data for age and sex. these data were collected from cities with similarities, as they are all three important university centers with industrial development that has been important for their countries. the results suggest that socioeconomic and demographic factors are insufficient to explain the great differences in the data reported.
La reducción de la mortalidad infantil desde un enfoque de derechos: una comparación entre Argentina y Brasil
Santillán Pizarro, María Marta;Rojas Cabrera, Eleonora Soledad;Celton, Dora Estela;Ribotta, Bruno;
Revista Brasileira de Estudos de Popula??o , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-30982011000200005
Abstract: the present article aims to investigate the progress reached in reducing infant mortality in argentina and in brazil, beginning in the 1990s, using human rights as the analytical approach. based on this perspective, the authors emphasize some fundamental principles on which they are based and that are present in all the instruments: "governments are the main duty barriers", "progress and non-retreat" and "equality and non-discrimination" to exercise rights. therefore, in addition to seeking to reduce the general level of infant mortality- as is the aim of any development policy - the human rights perspective proposes a systematic advance in exercising rights that reach the entire population, in this way, making it a priority to reduce the existing gap among social strata. the article is based on data published by national statistics institutes and by the centro latino-americano e caribenho de demografia - latin american and caribbean demography center (celade - cepal population division). among the main results, the trends in infant mortality, in the countries studied, were observed to have had major reductions, which may be explained by applying the principle of "progress and non-retreat". however, the progress attained is insufficient to reach the objectives made at international conferences. more concerning is not following the principle "equality and non-discrimination". the limited information available allows the evaluation that, in some cases, the reduction in discrepancies among social strata is minimum, or even null.

Electronic Journal of Plant Breeding , 2012,
Abstract: Cenchrus setigerus, C. sp., eleven obligate apomictic cultivars and a sexual line of Cenchrus ciliaris L. were studied to determinethe relationship between seed production and its component characters, through principal component analysis, path correlationanalysis and analysis of variance. A completely randomized field design was used. Ten vegetative and reproductivemorphological characters were measured. Seed production was influenced directly by panicle weight and indirectly by paniclelength, 1000 seed weight, length and width of flag leaf lamina and length of flag leaf sheath. Panicle weight showed highheritability and variability among genotypes. Hence, panicle weight can be considered a selection criterion to obtain increasedseed production in Cenchrus. The cultivar Lucero INTA PEMAN exhibited the highest panicle weight and, therefore, greatestseed production, which makes it suitable for selection as parental cultivar to obtain new germplasm in Cenchrus with high seedyield.

Abstract: the seismicity of se brazil is studied with a recent deployment of additional temporary digital and analog seismographic stations. regional and local stations have allowed the determination of three new composite focal mechanisms for the earthquake series of betim in 1992/93, formiga in 1993, and the reservoir-induced events of nova ponte in 1995, all in minas gerais state. the focal mechanism data in the southern part of the s?o francisco craton and adjacent brasília fold belt indicate both normal and reverse faulting with a common e-w to ne-sw orientation of the maximum horizontal stress. far from the continental margin, the focal mechanisms are consistent with theoretical estimates of stress directions from finite-element modelings of the forces driving the south american plate. near the serra do mar coastal range, the stress pattern seems more complex. a selection of the earthquake catalog, using threshold magnitudes varying in time to yield a data set with spatially uniform coverage, indicates two main seismic areas: 1) the offshore continental shelf , and 2) the southern part of the brasília fold belt and the s?o francisco craton. the high topography areas of the serra do mar and serra da mantiqueira (in the ribeira fold belt) and the paraná basin are much less seismically active.
A Method to Determine Gassing Power of Yeast
P. D. Ribotta,M. N. Giuliano Albo
Journal of Food Technology , 2013,
Abstract: A method for the determination of yeast activity (gas production) without taking into account the effects of other factors related to dough rising was tested varying fermentation conditions. In this method, the sugar in a liquid broad is fermented by yeastis fermented in a liquid broad and a flow of nitrogen is passed through the fermenting liquid to a pair of flasks with a solution of sodium hydroxide. Carbon dioxide is quantified by back titration. When the effects of nutrient types, weight amount and type of yeast, temperature and time of fermentation on gas production capacity of baker`s yeast were determined, the method proposed showed good repeatability and precision.
