García álvarez, Hugo;
Estudios fronterizos , 2011,
Abstract: the paper explores the role a regional mexican television channel has in the maintenance of cultural identity and cultural links with their home city of former monterrey, mexico, between inhabitants who migrated to houston, texas. through interviews it was possible to identify some strategies for tv viewers to reinforce their sense of belonging to their former local community and avoid their emotional distancing from it and deal with the border. the cases described here show how some people search their identity as mexican-americans and the role this tv signal can play, along with the dynamics the border impose on them. the study concludes that in addition to the initial social and familiar networks that facilitated the arrival of newcomers, the availability of "canal 12" helps to understand a community in a transnational setting as a manifestation of the conditions of border relations and the continuity that this bi-national space provide to maintain strong cultural and symbolic ties with their home region in northeast mexico.
Arroyo,Hugo A.;
Medicina (Buenos Aires) , 2007,
Abstract: migraine diagnosis only relies on clinical characteristics of the episodes and therefore on the doctor's skill and experience. it is recognized that migraine inclusively in the pediatric group is underdiagnosed and inadequately treated. the international headache society recently reviewed the international headache classification and incorporated some clinical criteria according to the different age groups. pediatricians and pediatric neurologists now have a new document and should become familiar with it. this paper discusses these new criteria for migraine and other primary headaches.
Cordo,Hugo A.;
Revista de la Sociedad Entomol?3gica Argentina , 2004,
Abstract: natural areas of argentina, protected because of their unique fauna, flora and landscape, are threatened by non-indigenous plants. replacement plant communities of the natural areas are often dominated by a few successful cosmopolitan exotic weeds. since eradication of these noxious plants is not possible, control methods should be implemented to maintain their populations below harmful levels. integrated control is perhaps the best alternative because it uses all methods of control available, cultural, manual, mechanical, chemical and biological. biological control of weeds is utilized worldwide by many countries and has provided solutions for a vast array of situations and weeds species. in argentina, biological control of weeds is thought as a unapproachable methodology because of the apparent difficulties in obtaining controlling agents. this is not always true since organisms needed for biological control of selected weeds could be acquired via international cooperation. in order to open effective channels of cooperation with well-known institutes of biological control it is vital to create sound programs that assures the continuity of projects.
Análisis consumidor de vinos en la Argentina

Abstract: this analysis provides a conceptual fundamentation of wine purchase from the consumer behavior and a potential argentine wine market segmentation. the theoretical frame is from the lacanian conception of human pulsions: the symbolic thing, the imaginary and the real thing; all applied to consumer behavior, in its imaginary dimension of value, applied to the product wine and as a medium object to link imaginary thing and symbolic thing. from this productive relationship between wished object and symbolic satisfactor object an entailment of value arising client-product that, for each part, it acquires a different meaning. the wine market segmentation in argentina is made through the identification of grouped consumers in two dimensions: socioeconomic level and the age of the buyers, identifying four segments: experts, aspiracionals, traditional and beginners. finally, these segments are disaggregates in others and it is recommended different strategies associated to different business opportunities
Community–groundwater compatibility assessments: An approach towards sustainable groundwater development
JA Myburgh, A Hugo
Water SA , 2012,
Abstract: To address water availability problems in a semi-arid country like South Africa, the National Water Act (RSA, 1998) proposes that specialists adopt an approach that is strategic, deliberate and dictated by socio-political reforms and socioeconomic development needs on a programmatic basis for long-term sustainability. To achieve this goal an approach is developed to determine community–groundwater compatibility as part of the initial stages of regional rural groundwaterdevelopment projects in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. The steps followed in the community–groundwater compatibility assessment include: A desktop study where available literature is collected and reviewed. From this information and history, the sociopolitical challenges that will have to be faced for the successful completion of the groundwater-development project in the study area can often be established. This is valuable information to assist the hydrogeological team in planning the community–groundwater compatibility assessment, taking note of pitfalls and lessons learnt from previous approaches that might not always have been successful. A socio-economic characterisation includes setting up a contact database for the community authorities and technical managers within the study. The contact database includes all contact details of the ward councillors/technical managers as well as any relevant information or comments made by the ward councillor/technical manager during the conversation. All identified stakeholders must also be contacted, informing them of the project and study. The data obtained from the role-players are used to develop a social-character map. Site surveys and sampling are based on the social-character map. The study team assesses the knowledge communities carry concerning groundwater as well as their general attitude towards the use of groundwater. Data processing and analyses include the statistical processing of the collected data to assess the comprehensive measure of groundwater compatibility per area, and the individual indicators of the groundwater-compatibility index are given a relative score. This enables the different indicators for groundwater compatibility per area to be combined to give a single composite score for each spatial area. Target areas are finally characterised in terms of their ‘community–groundwater compatibility index’. Maps showing the social and basic hydrogeological character of target areas are valuable tools towards assisting local authorities in decision-making.

PECUNIA EX MACHINA: PAKISTANI ENTREPRENEURS IN THE CITY OF BARCELONA
Hugo Valenzuela García
Revista CIDOB d'Afers Internacionals , 2010,
Abstract: The Pakistani migratory project is profoundly driven by economic objectives that are clearly apparent in their hard-working attitudes, their typically modest expenditure and consumption, the high rate of ethnic entrepreneurship and their remarkable commercial success. Nevertheless, the manifest economic inclination of the group involves a high social cost. This article analyses the economic and socio-cultural key issues that underlie the economic behavior of Pakistanis, as well as the social cost of the migratory enterprise. Furthermore, the paper describes the socio-cultural traits of the Pakistani community and, through a description of Pakistani settlement, it focuses on other important processes that concern the configuration of the city, such as gentrification, centrifugation and reproduction.
Malay health in context: humoral system, traditional medicine, reproduction and rites de passage
Valenzuela García, Hugo
Revista de Dialectología y Tradiciones Populares , 2009,
Abstract: The author introduces some of the foundations of Malay culture with respect to health and disease in a rural context. Malay cosmology is grounded in a syncretism of animistic beliefs with Islam. The cognitive and symbolic contents of this cosmology reveals general aspects of Malay culture (cosmology, social structure, gender relationships, witchcraft) as well as specific aspects of the same as they pertain to health and illness (understanding of the body, reproduction, disease). Ethnography is predicated on a twofold methodological exercise: identifying the social and cultural context in which disease is understood locally and eliciting elements for comparison with other Muslim social formations in the context of contemporary biomedical systems.
Hugo R Oca?a
This analysis provides a conceptual fundamentation of wine purchase from the consumer behavior and a potential Argentine wine market segmentation. El Control Biológico de Malezas, una alternativa factible para la lucha contra las plantas invasoras exóticas en áreas Protegidas de la Argentina Biological Control of Weeds as a Feasible Option against Invasive Exotic Plants in Protected Natural Areas of Argentina
Hugo A. Cordo
