The effect of vitamin C and cobalt supplementation on antioxidant status in healthy and diabetic rats

Abstract: In the present study, liver, lung, heart and kidney superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT) activities, lipid peroxidation, nitrite and vitamin C levels were investigated in diabetic rats. Diabetes induced in rats by streptozotocin (STZ) and the treated rats were received 1 g/l vitamin C with 0.5 mM CoCl2 in drinking water for eigth weeks. In all tissues, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase activities, lipid peroxidation and nitrite levels were significantly increased in diabetic rats at the end of 8th week (p < 0.05) whereas vitamin C level was decreased compared to those of controls. Cobalt with vitamin C treatment of diabetic rats resulted in partial restoration of SOD and CAT activities, thiobarbituric acid reactant substances (TBARS), vitamin C and nitrite levels at all times studied, whereas treatment did not significantly change GSH-Px activity compared to diabetics. These results suggest that cobalt with vitamin C, effectively but could not completely restore the altered endogenous defense systems in diabetic rat liver, lung, heart and kidney tissues.

Abstract:

In this paper, the homoto pyanalysis method (HAM) is presented to solve some of engineering problems. The homotopy analysis method is applied in obtaining exact solutions for equations of the type?Δ2=b(x,y) and ?Δ2u=b(x,y,u)on an elliptical domain. Exact solutions are presented for several examples involving to demon strate the applic ability and efficiency of HAM.

Financial Risk Measurement for Turkish Insurance Companies Using VaR Models  [PDF]

Abstract: This study aims to measure the foreign exchange risks that the insurance companies are exposed to. In this context, this study analyzes 7 insurance companies listed in Borsa Istanbul (Istanbul Stock Exchange). The foreign exchange risks that the insurance companies are exposed to were measured using VaR models, Historical Simulation and Monte Carlo Simulation methods. Data obtained from the analysis show the losses that the insurance companies suffer due to exchange risk. The losses calculated using the Monte Carlo Simulation were found to be greater than the losses calculated using Historical Simulation.

Abstract: The crystal structure of potential active 4-benzoyl-1,5-diphenyl-1H*-pyrazole-3-carbonitrile (C23H15N3O) (I) has been determined from single crystal X-ray diffraction data. Also IR, Uv-vis and NMR spectral data were determined. The title compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P* 21/c, with a* = 9.3167(2), b* = 20.6677(3), c* = 10.6143(3) ?, β* = 112.665(3)°, V* = 1886.00(8) ?3, Dcalc* = 1.23g cm-3, Z* = 4. In the structure, intermolecular H*-bonds lead to the formation of a centrosymmetric dimmer of the molecule. Furthermore, the compound has a wide transmission window (300 to 1100 nm) with a transparency of nearly 100% and the UV cut-off wavelength occurs at 242 nm.
Animal Models in Beh?et's Disease

Abstract: Beh?et's disease is a chronic, recurrent, multisystemic, inflammatory disorder affecting mainly the oral and urogenital mucosa and the uveal tract. Although the etiology and pathogenesis of Beh?et's disease are unknown, numerous etiologies have been proposed, including environmental, infectious, and immunological factors; an autoimmune basis, characterized by circulating immune complexes and complement activation, has gained increasing acceptance. To test and understand immunopathogenesis of Beh?et's disease, animal models were developed based on enviromental pollutants, bacterial and human heat shock protein derived peptides, and virus injections. Using these animal models separately and/or concurrently allows for a more effective investigation into Beh?et's disease. Animal models developed in the last 10 years aim at the development of efficient and safe treatment options. 1. Introduction Beh?et’s disease (BD) is a chronic, multisystemic, inflammatory disorder and is characterized by mucocutaneous, ocular, arthritic, vascular, gastrointestinal, and central nervous system involvement. The disease has a chronic course with periodic exacerbations and progressive deterioration [1]. Since the dermatologist Dr. Hulusi Beh?et [2] comprehensively described this disease involving multisystemic organs in 1937, the etiology of BD has still remained unclear. Various hypotheses have been proposed centering on viral infection, autoimmune disease, streptococcal-related antigens, specific alleles of the human major histocompatibility complex, genetic factors, and hazardous chemicals [3–7]. The history and recent developments in the immunopathogenesis of BD are reviewed and discussed in this paper. 2. Short History Viral infection has long been postulated as one of the etiologic and triggering factors. Hulusi Beh?et proposed that the disease was caused by a special virus. Although he was unable to demonstrate one, he had observed intracellular inclusion-like forms in smears from the hypopyon of the anterior chamber and aphthae [2]. In 1953, Sezer [8] was the first to isolate the virus from ocular fluid and serially cultivate it in chorioallantoic membrane of fertile eggs. He inoculated the material from the ocular fluid of patients into brains of mice. Inoculated mice showed manifestation such as roughening of the coat, inactivity or hyperactivity, tremor, circling, paralysis, encephalitis, thrombophlebitis, and swelling. Evans et al. Effects of breeder age and pre-incubation storage of eggs on hatchability, time of hatch and relative organ weight of quail chicks at hatch

Abstract: Two thousand four hundred quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) hatching eggs were used to determine the effects of breeder age and pre-incubation storage time on egg traits, hatching traits and the growth of some selected organs in newly hatched chicks. Eggs from two non-commercial flocks (aged 10 vs. 40 weeks) of the same strain were incubated. Eggs were stored for 4 or 14 days prior to incubation. All eggs were set in an experimental setter and incubated under uniform conditions for approximately 19 days (448 h). Fresh egg weight, chick weight and percentage yolk weight were significantly higher in eggs obtained from breeders at 40 weeks of age than from those of 10 weeks of age, whereas percentage albumen weight was significantly higher in eggs obtained from 10 wk old breeders. There were significant storage period x hen age interactions for water loss in chicks, early embryonic death, late embryonic death, deaths during internal and external pipping, and hatchability of fertile eggs. From 405 h to 441 h of incubation, the percentage of hatched chicks was influenced by the storage period x breeder age interaction. The jejunum length of chicks from 40 wk old breeders was longer when eggs were stored for 4 days compared to 14 days. At hatch, chick liver weight as a percentage of live weight was higher when eggs obtained from 10 wk old breeders were stored for 4 days compared to 14 days. It was concluded that the effects of extended storage time on hatching traits were different for eggs laid by young compared to old breeders.

Abstract: In recent years with emerging developments in radiological imaging techniques, it has been possible to determine the underlying morphologic, metabolic and even molecular pathologic basis of psychiatric disorders. In this review, we aimed to gather under the main headings, the spectrum of the imaging methods used in diagnosing psychiatric major diseases, characteristics of the existing systems, update information and future expectations. There is multitudinous published studies in the literature related to almost all psychiatric disorders and syndromes and the knowledge about them are much more than expected. As could easily be observed from literature evaluation, studies on computed tomography is almost ended, and MRI studies are shifted to advanced submodalities such as; fMRI, DWI, DTI. Combined imaging modalities like PET/CT and PET/MRI provide useful information in determination of metabolic activity of o focal or diffuse lesion area. Functional information is an helpful modality for directing the lesion localization especially in normal cross-sectional images and in the follow-up of the response to treatment. Radiologically, in the light of recent advances mainly depending on the MRI and PET technology; it is possible to identify the volumetric, functional, metabolic differences of the whole brain or of a special area. Thus the abnormalities in these mentioned parameters could also be evaluated for psychiatric diseases. In recent studies, anatomical based imaging principles somehow prone to shift molecular based imaging methods. So these genetic-molecular based studies currently ongoing in the experimental stage that make it possible to diagnose and monitor the primary pathology, give hope for the future of the imaging in psychiatric diseases.
AN EVALUATION OF THE PROBLEMS OF TURKISH PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF PUBLIC RELATIONS

Abstract: One of the basic problems of Turkish public administration is its distrustfulness against both to the public and its own staff. Similarly, the public don’t trust the public administration which is insensitive to their own expectations, desires and necessities. This sense of distrustfulness leads both to the administration’s introvertedness and its the lack of sensivity against the public, and at the same time the alienation of the public against the administration. The weakness of the reflexes of Turkish public administration to the change and its environment leads to various organizational and operational problems in public organizations. The aim of this study is to analyze the situation of Turkish public administration when compared to the perfect public relations activities. In this context, in this study, public relations has been defined, the problems of Turkish public administration have been described and analyses directed to the development of the relations between the public and public administration.
