The Philosophy-Psychology Linkage  [PDF]

Abstract: The Essay explores two questions about the subject: a. whether exist any linkage between Philosophy and Psychology, and b. what is the nature of this linkage? Actually, the Author answers that such a linkage already exists. In fact, these two disciplines are like two sides of the same coin, they are complementary rather than competitive. For clarifying this argument the Author discusses 3 example cases, examining the whole individual-organization complex. The Essay describes Adam and Eve’s nature and curiosity, qualities that empowered them in their search for knowledge. This behavior also made them the fore-parents of all explorers, pioneers and researchers who followed them. Further, the Author indicates how wrong use of ideological declarations hurts individuals and subdues them. Finally, the Author advocates the introducing of the “Normal Distribution Method” and the “Bell type Curve” as main tools in teaching and studying Social Sciences.

Abstract: Despite the rise of the social sciences in the last two centuries, we can not understand the advancement of humanistic studies if not through mathematics. The dichotomous excuse “science am / am of letters” has no place in the world of research. However humanist who is our domain, we can not ignore that mathematics is the code that describes the universe. Human behaviors are not case apart. In this article we will analyze the weight of normal, actually collected by Gauss and his famous curve of normal distribution or bell curve.
Using conversions and treatments to understand students’ engagement with problems based on the normal distribution curve

Abstract: Including probability and statistics in the core curriculum of mathematics in South African schools has made it necessary to train teachers to teach statistics at high school level. This study concentrates on practising mathematics teachers who were students in an in-service programme. The purpose of the study was to investigate students’ success rates on different questions of a multi-part task based on the normal distribution curve. The theory that I used to understand the students’ difficulties is Duval’s theory about movement within and between semiotic representation systems, called treatment transformations and conversion transformations respectively. The first two parts of the problem were unknown percentage problems and involved a treatment followed by a conversion. The third was an unknown value problem and required a conversion before the students could undertake a treatment transformation. The findings reveal that the success rates the students achieved in treatment transformations were higher than those they achieved in conversion transformations. The study also revealed that the direction of the conversions played a role in success rates. Recognising the different challenges the two types of transformations pose requires that teachers pay particular attention to actions that involve movement between different representation systems.

A new method is developed to simulate the skew normal distribution. The result is interesting from a practical as well as a theoretical viewpoint. The new method is simple to program and is more efficient than the standard method of simulation by acceptance-rejection method.

The bell curve revisited: A South African perspective

Abstract: The principal objective of the study was to examine some of the scientific premises of The Bell Curve by Herrnstein and Murray (1996). It was shown that the hypothetical construct referred to as 'g' is nothing more than the aggregate of the various cognitive tests contained in the battery of tests that is subjected to factor analysis. The nature of g, therefore, depends on the composition of the test battery. Furthermore, it was shown that the predictive validity of multiple factors is always better than that of g alone. The validity of Spearman's hypothesis was investigated and found wanting. The critical role of formal schooling in the development of intellect (both fluid and crystallised) was discussed with reference to illiterate adults in South Africa. The importance of the interaction of heredity and environment was stressed. The best genetic endowment can only come to fruition in a stimulating environment. The relationship between locus of control and intelligence was discussed. Opsomming Die hoofdoelstelling van die studie was om die wetenskaplike aannames waarop The Bell Curve deur Herrnstein en Murray (1996) gebaseer is, te ondersoek. Dit is aangetoon dat die hipotetiese konstruk, bekend as 'g', niks meer is as die somtotaal van die Verskillende kognitiewe toetse wat in die battery ingesluit is en aan faktorontleding onderwerp word. Hierbenewens is getoon dat die voorspellingsgeldigheid van veelvuldige faktore altyd hoer is as die van g alleen. Die geldigheid van Spearman se hipotese is ondersoek en gebrekkig bevind. Die kritieke rol van formele skoolopleiding in die ontwikkeling van intellik (sowel vloeibaar as gekristalliseerd) is bespreek met verwysing na ongeletterde volwassenes in Suid-Afrika. Die belangrikheid van interaksie tussen oorerwing en omgewing is beklemtoon. Die beste genetiese potensiaal kan slegs tot verwekliking kom in 'n stimulerende omgewing. Die verband tussen lokus van beheer en intelligensie is bespreek.

Abstract: Let C be a simple closed convex curve in the plane for which the radius of curvature is a continuous function of the arc length. Such a curve is called a convex curve of bounded type, if lies between two fixed positive bounds. Here we give a new and simpler proof of Blaschke's Rolling Theorem. We prove one new theorem and suggest a number of open problems.

Abstract: Field equations in the presence of perfect fluid distribution are obtained in a scalar tensor theory of gravitation proposed by Brans and Dicke[1] with the aid of Bianchi type-II, VIII & IX metrics. Exact prefect fluid Bianchi type- IX cosmological model is presented since other models doesn’t exist in Brans-Dicke scalar tensor theory of gravitation. Some physical properties of the model are also discussed.
Influence of oscillations amplitude of sieve on the screening process for a conical sieve with oscillatory circular motion

Abstract: A conical suspended sieve, with oscillatory circular motion, was tested for rapeseeds screening, in order to estimate the influence of oscillation parameters on the separation process. Amplitude and frequency of oscillation were modified, as well as the feed flow with material. Distribution curves were drawn for the separated seeds under the sieve for various distanced from the top edge of the sieve, where feeding was made. By regression analysis by means of Gauss distribution law, were determined the coefficients of distribution function and the correlation with the experimental data. By determining the position of the peak of distribution curve depending on the working regime parameters was estimated the influence of oscillation amplitude on the process of seeds separation.
