Abstract: Vegetables productions systems are done normally with intense soil tillage causing a strong decline of soil quality. Use of conservation systems can be an alternative to recover this quality. In order to evaluate the effects of such systems on soil organic matter, an experiment has been conducted in randomized blocks design and factorial scheme 3 × 2: three soil management systems (no-tillage; reduced tillage and conventional tillage) and two cover crops (maize single; and intercropping maize with gray velvet bean—Stizolobium niveum); and repeated measures over time. Soil samples were collected before the implementation of the experiment and at the end of each crop cycle until the fifth crop cycle. Carbon associated with humic substances is also determined in 0 - 5 cm, 5 - 10 cm and 10 - 30 cm at the end of the last crop cycle. The SOM content was higher in RT (48.34 g·kg-1) than in the CT (39.48 g·kg-1) at the end of the fifth crop cycle. SOM content in NT (44.92 g·kg-1) was statistically equal to RT and CT, during the same period. In 0 - 5 cm, carbon contents associated to the humic substances present the same behavior of SOM contents in 0 - 10 cm. Probably these results are associated with the capacity of each system to improve superficial contents of SOM stable fractions. It follows that the conservation systems used are alternatives to the cultivation vegetables in order to improve soil organic matter contents.

Abstract: the effect of n:k relationship was evaluated when applied through fertigation, on two-spotted-spider mite, tetranychus urticae, infestation and on the yield of two strawberry cultivars. strawberry plants received weekly doses of n and k (g/plant) by drip irrigation: 0.27 and 0.13; 0.27 and 0.50; 0.27 and 0.76 and control (water+micronutrients). fruits were collected twenty two times during crop cycle. marketable, non-marketable fruits and other yield parameters were evaluated. leaf nutrient content analysis was performed to determine the nutritional condition of the plants. population density of t. urticae was evaluated weekly. a significant interaction between k doses and pest population was observed. higher doses of the nutrient reduced the number of eggs and active forms of the pest population and the cultivar diamante showed the smallest pest density. k and p showed negative correlation with both variables, but n showed a positive one. no effects were observed of fertilization on yield parameters due, probably, to the high mite infestation (>40 individuals per leaflet) in all treatments during most of the crop cycle. solely the use of different n:k ratios on the strawberry fertilization management at this specific experimental condition, was not sufficient to control two-spotted spider mite nor to reduce losses caused by that pest.

Histone H3 gene in the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas Thunberg, 1793: molecular and cytogenetic characterisations

Comparative Cytogenetics , 2010, DOI: 10.3897/compcytogen.v4i2.32
Abstract: The Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas Thunberg, 1793 (2n = 20) is an economically important mollusc species cultured throughout the world. The most frequently used technique for molecular cytogenetic studies is fluorescence in situ hybridisation which offers new opportunities for the identification of oyster chromosomes. In oysters, it has been used to locate telomeric sequences, satellite DNA, simple sequence repeats, ribosomal RNA genes, and bacteriophage P1 clones. However, regarding chromosome identification, no study has been done with histone H3 gene. Histone H3 is among the most conserved eukaryotic proteins. Most histone H3 genes are repeatedly organised into clusters, which make them an ideal chromosomal marker. In bivalves, some data exist concerning sequence information but little knowledge is available concerning the physical mapping of histone genes. The histone H3 gene was sequenced in C. gigas and phylogenetic analysis revealed that C. gigas was more closely related to Ostrea edulis Linnaeus, 1758 and species of the genus Mytilus Linnaeus, 1758. In C. gigas, the histone H3 gene was mapped on two different pairs of chromosomes, one at an interstitial site on the long arm of chromosome pair 4, and the other on the telomeres of the smaller chromosome pair (pair 10). Polymorphism was detected on the telomeres of pair 10, once it was possible to observe single or double signals. Comparative chromosomal mapping should improve our understanding of bivalve genome organisation.
