An Isoperimetric Function for Bestvina-Brady Groups
Will Dison
Mathematics , 2007, DOI: 10.1112/blms/bdn019
Abstract: Given a right-angled Artin group A, the associated Bestvina-Brady group is defined to be the kernel of the homomorphism A \to \mathbb{Z} that maps each generator in the standard presentation of A to a fixed generator of \mathbb{Z}. We prove that the Dehn function of an arbitrary finitely presented Bestvina-Brady group is bounded above by n^4. This is the best possible universal upper bound.

Abstract: We establish a cubic lower bound on the Dehn function of a certain finitely presented subgroup of a direct product of 3 free groups.
Isoperimetric functions for subdirect products and Bestvina-Brady groups
Will Dison
Mathematics , 2008,
Abstract: In this thesis we investigate the Dehn functions of two different classes of groups: subdirect products, in particular subdirect products of limit groups; and Bestvina-Brady groups. Let D = \Gamma_1 \times ... \times \Gamma_n be a direct product of n \geq 3 finitely presented groups and let H be a subgroup of D. Suppose that each \Gamma_i contains a finite index subgroup \Gamma_i' \leq \Gamma_i such that the commutator subgroup [D', D'] of D' = \Gamma_1' \times ... \times \Gamma_n' is contained in H. Suppose furthermore that, for each i, the subgroup \Gamma_i H has finite index in D. We prove that H is finitely presented and satisfies an isoperimetric inequality given in terms of area-radius pairs for the \Gamma_i and the dimension of (D'/H) \otimes \Q. In the case that each \Gamma_i admits a polynomial-polynomial area-radius pair, it will follow that H satisfies a polynomial isoperimetric inequality. As a corollary we obtain that if K is a subgroup of a direct product of n limit groups and if K is of type FP_m(\Q), where m = \max {2, n-1}, then K is finitely presented and satisfies a polynomial isoperimetric inequality. In particular, we obtain that all finitely presented subgroups of a direct product of at most 3 limit groups satisfy a polynomial isoperimetric inequality. We also prove that if B is a finitely presented Bestvina-Brady group, then B admits a quartic isoperimetric function.
Chnoosporaceae, Scytosiphonaceae, Sporochnaceae and Sphacelariaceae (Phaeophyta) in the State of Bahia, Brazil
José Marcos de Castro Nunes,édison José de Paula
Biotemas , 2004,
Abstract: Taxonomic studies were carried out on eight species of the Chnoosporaceae, Scytosiphonaceae, Sporochnaceae and Sphacelariaceae families. The specimens were collected in (or from) the midlittoral and infralittoral zones of Bahia state Coast, Brazil. Material was deposited in the Alexandre Leal Costa Herbarium (ALCB) of the Universidade Federal da Bahia. Reference to the original description, basionym, dichotomic keys, morphological description and geographical distribution along the Brazilian coast are presented for each taxon studied.
Valores energéticos de alguns alimentos utilizados em ra??es para codornas japonesas
Gomes, Fábio Augusto;Fassani, édison José;Rodrigues, Paulo Borges;Silva Filho, José Cleto da;
Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-35982007000200017
Abstract: the experiment was conducted to determine the energy values of 12 feeds for japanese quails. two hundred and eighty quails averaging 19 weeks old were submitted to the method of total feces collection as a randomized block design, with ten quails per experimental unit. the experimental period lasted 32 days, divided into four trials of eight days each, where two groups of feeds were studied (protein and energetic), with five replicates each: protein of animal origin (meat and bone meal, fish meal and feather and viscera meal) and plant (soybean meals 1 and 2), as well as energetic feeds of plant origin (millet, sorghum and whole rice bran) and oil and fats (refined soybean oil, poultry fat, beef tallow and swine fat). the feeds replaced the reference diet (corn, soybean meal-based diet), as-fed, in 20% (protein of animal origin), 30% (protein of plant origin), 40% (energetic of plant origin) and 10% (oil and fats). the values of apparent metabolizable energy (ame), true (tme), ame and tme corrected by nitrogen balance (amen and tmen), as well as the metabolization coefficients of gross energy (mgec) were the analyzed variables. the protein sources, with the exception of feather and viscera meal, had values of amen higher than those of the brazilian tables for poultry and swine, meat and bone meal showed the greatest mgec (74.06%), while feather and viscera meal, the lowest (56.24%). the energetic feeds, with exception of sorghum, showed higher values of amen than those cited by the brazilian tables for poultry and swine, and both refined soybean oil and swine fat had the highest mgec (95.81% and 93.32%, respectively), while whole rice bran, the lowest (61.13%).
"O compl? da torcida": futebol e performance masculina em bares
Gastaldo, édison;
Horizontes Antropológicos , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-71832005000200006
Abstract: this paper issues some topics of the social interaction occurrant in bars where football matches are transmitted, particularly aspects of gender performance. the data analysed refer to an ethnographic fieldwork being held since the beginning of 2004 in bars of the greater porto alegre area, in brazil. three performatic modalities are discussed: the presence on the setting as performance, verbal challenges between the participants and joking dramatizations. i consider that these elements - among others - reveal part of the complex field of meanings related to masculinity in brazilian society, being a constitutive part of the phenomenon that i call "football joking relationships".
As rela??es jocosas futebolísticas: futebol, sociabilidade e conflito no Brasil
Gastaldo, édison;
Mana , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-93132010000200003
Abstract: this paper presents ethnographic data obtained during the author's fieldwork in sports bars in rio de janeiro, brazil, providing the basis for a theory of 'football joking relationships.' the notion of the 'joking relationship' is well-known to anthropological theory, due in particular to the classic article 'parentés à plaisanteries' by marcel mauss, published in 1926, though its origins can be traced back to earlier works by authors such as robert lowie and a. r. radcliffe-brown. this paper connects the playful expression of feelings to the symbolic universe of football in brazilian society. voluntary support for a favourite club enables the fan to take part in a series of 'games' associated with football, but parallel to it, such as betting, verbal duels and challenges, which involve the symbolic logics of honour, gender and power endemic to brazilian society.
Goffman e as rela??es de poder na vida cotidiana
Gastaldo, édison;
Revista Brasileira de Ciências Sociais , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-69092008000300013
Abstract: this paper aims at exploring part of the work of the canadian sociologist erving goffman, especially his dealing with the relations of power in the daily life. this theme is diffusely found all around his work, thus highlighting a political perspective of the social interaction order. two books are particularly analyzed: the presentation of self in everyday life (1959) and gender advertisements (1979), where themes such as "status definition," "social coercion," "gender," and "media" are therefore approached.
"O país do futebol" mediatizado: mídia e Copa do Mundo no Brasil
Gastaldo, édison;
Sociologias , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-45222009000200013
Abstract: this paper examines the media discourse on the world cup in brazil. in a critical review of the social formation of the "mass media", it discusses the way in which the media operates in society, through the concept of "mediation". considering the data on the audience and the thematic focus on brazilian television during the world cup of 1998, the article analyzes the role of media in the development of the interest for the world cup in brazil. without denying the legitimacy of the social concern for football in brazil, the author emphasizes the participation of the media in this process.
Comunica o e esporte: explorando encruzilhadas, saltando cercas
