Abstract: Introducción. Introduction. In spite of implementation of cytology-based cervical cancer screening in Colombia, mortality rates remain stable. The description of factors associated to cervical pre-neoplasic lesions is needed to establish strategies for mortality prevention. Objective. The prevalence of epithelial squamous cell abnormalities was determined to explore the association of cytology abnormalities with described risk factors. Materials and methods. This population-based, cross-sectional study included 739 women randomly selected by age. A validated face-to-face questionnaire and conventional cervical cytology were used to collect the information. To establish the association between cervical abnormalities and some qualitative variables, the independent chi squared test was used. We also calcula
Effects of the Heterogeneity of the Landscape and the Abundance of Wasmannia auropunctata on Ground Ant Assemblages in a Colombian Tropical Dry Forest

Psyche , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/960475
Abstract: To evaluate the response of the ant assemblages to different management practices in the tropical dry forests of southwestern Colombia, 10 sites that conserve forest fragments surrounded by pastures and sugarcane crops were sampled. Tuna-fish baits placed on the ground in the three habitats captured 100 ant species (41 genera). The greatest number of species was found in the forests in contrast with a significant loss of richness and diversity in the productive habitats, the pastures being richer than the cane fields. Species richness was negatively correlated with the abundance of the little fire ant Wasmannia auropunctata. Ant species composition was related to soil temperature and percent ground cover, as well as being partially determined by location and the abundance of W. auropunctata. The forests had a significantly different species composition from the other two habitats, but there were no consistent differences between the pastures and the cane fields.

Agronomía Colombiana , 2010,
Abstract: the palm disease known as "lethal wilt" is present in plantations of the area of the first floor of the upía river, in seven year-old palms of having sowed. it is not known the possible causal agent or factors that predispose the palms to the disease and it has not registered so far in other areas palms of the country. the carbohydrate metabolism was analyzed in oil palms with initial symptoms of disease, suspicious palms of presenting the disease, and healthy palms inside and outside of a disease focus. samples of leaves, roots and trunks was analyzed to determine the concentrations of starch, sugars reducers, sugars non reducers and total sugars. the concentration of sugars reducers increased in palms with initial symptoms and suspects; the total sugars concentration in the suspicious palms increased compared with concentrations in palms with initial symptoms. the sugars non reducers in the different evaluated organs had very low concentrations. this results has been observe on alteration of the metabolism of the carbohydrates in the palms with "lethal wilt" probably suggest that the phytoplasmas are associated to the disease.

Revista Ciencias de la Salud , 2009,
Abstract: neuromyelitis optical, also known as devic’s syndrome, is a disease which combines optic neuritis and transverse myelitis. some years ago it was considered as a form of multiple sclerosis. actually, it is consider as a different disease, on the basis of the clinical, imaging, serology and immunopatholoy profile. a case of 29 years old female patient is reported, based on her clinical findings which began in the fifth postpartum month, with progressive lower limb paresis, associated with bilateral vision loss. this paper attempts giving a synoptic overview of this uncommon immune mediated demyelinating condition; it summarises the most important epidemiological parameters and presents the diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities available today.

The anatomical changes in reproductive structures were observed and described frrom button to mature fruit and the phenological states and the structural development of the Cape gooseberry fruit, ecotype Colombia, were established settled down. This investigation was made in a commercial Cape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana) orchard located in the municipality of Granada, Cundinamarca, Colombia. The study confirmed that anatomically the Cape gooseberry fruits, ecotipo Colombia, and ruderal type are similar, which demonstrates the absence of appreciable anatomical changes that explain the greater size of the fruits of ecotipo Colombia.
