Oliveira, Giselle Santos de;Figueiredo, álvaro Souto Padrón de;Santos, Rosane de Souza;Vianna, Lucia Marques;
Revista de Nutri??o , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-52732007000100004
Abstract: objective: to investigate if supplementation with supraphysiological doses of beta-carotene has a positive effect on controlling hypertension and detect possible adverse effects of this supplementation. methods: 20-week-old spontaneously hypertensive rats (n=12) and normotensive rats (n=12) were submitted to a basal period of 10 days, then divided into 4 groups of 6 animals and supplemented daily by orogastric gavage with beta-carotene in 3 different doses: 2.5mg, 3.75mg and 5.0mg/animal during 14 days for each dose that was inserted by a seven day wash-out period; control groups received only coconut oil. animals were submitted to ectoscopic evaluation to detect possible toxic effects or interaction between nutrients and analysis of biological parameters; systolic blood pressure was measured by plethysmography twice a week on alternate days; after the supplementation period, animals were killed and their livers weighed by the scherle method. results: administration of beta-carotene did not alter the animals' biological parameters or cause any toxic effects. regarding systolic blood pressure, both lineages showed significant results (p<0.05), with the highest dose presenting the best results. the average liver weight was 7.25 (3.2 standard-deviation) grams, and the relationship between the average liver weight and body weight was 0.0192 for the hypertensive group. conclusion: beta-carotene supplementation was effective in controlling and preventing hypertension in rats. the relationship between liver weight and body weight was normal.
Discourse Analysis: Ronald Reagan’s Evil Empire Speech  [PDF]
Juliana Vianna da Nobrega
Open Journal of Modern Linguistics (OJML) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojml.2014.41014
Abstract:

Language can be a powerful tool to convince others and make them cooperative. Cialdini (2007) has worked out several principles along which it is possible to analyze discourses in terms of their persuasiveness. Others also have contributed with tools to analyzing discourses such as Fairclough (2003). These tools are used to analyze the “Evil Empire Speech” of the US President Ronald Reagan that he held at the National Association of Evangelicals, 1983, in Orlando Florida. His historical speech was aimed at convincing the nation about the righteousness of his nuclear policy. He partly rewrote the already prepared script and included the “evil empire” part. The analysis supports that his speech was an exceptionally effective one. Reagan made his speech an example of the following principles of persuasiveness such as reciprocity, authority, commitment, liking, scarcity and social proof. He wanted support for belligerent intentions from a faithful community, which was already problematic, but he got the audience on his side through emphasizing his similarities with them, his own faithfulness, the presentation of strong examples and balancing humor and seriousness. Additionally, he introduced the striking metaphor “evil empire”, which stuck to the peoples’ minds and had an impact on them. He also appealed to the people through implicitly distinguishing the evil from the ones who were not evil—the US citizens. Thus, he made the American people feel better, to ensure them that they do the right thing when following him. He ranked religious people above him when he was joking about clergy men and politicians. To reinforce his authority, he borrowed the authority of various respected men through citing them. He improved his position and the power of his arguments using the philosophical wisdom of others.

Compara??o entre as técnicas de shouldice e falci-lichtenstein, no tratamento das hérnias inguinais em homens

Revista do Colégio Brasileiro de Cirurgi?es , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-69912004000200009
Abstract: objective: we compared the shouldice (s) technique, a repair in four layers of continuous suture and the falci-lichtenstein (fl) technique that uses polypropylene prothesis. method: one hundred and eighteen male patients underwent surgery, on a total of 124 hernias. fifty-eight of them underwent inguinal hernia surgery by the fl technique, and the other 60 patients by the s technique. in each group 62 inguinais hernias with 85% of the patients were followed for four years. the average age was 52 years old. fifty-three type 3 a hernias, 57 type 3b and 10 type 4 hernias were operated, according to the nyhus classification. concerning the side, there was a predominance on the right with 65 ruptures (52.4%). the anesthesia was spinal in (89.8%) of the patients. results: the bruise and the seroma were the most common postoperative complications, occuring more frequently with the fl technique. in this one there was a recurrence (0,8%), because the bandage and the inguinal ligament broke up. in another patient, a femoral rupture turned up. the patients operated through the s technique complained more about pain on the immediate postoperative period and returned to work later. the observation time wasn't the ideal, because the largest index of recurrence can be in the non controlled patients, as it's known that 40% of the recurrence occur 5 years after the primary operation and 20% 25 years after. conclusions: both repairs presented low rates of recurrence. the shouldice technique is more complex, as it allows a safe exploration of the femoral channel, requires a more solid anatomical knowledge of the region and a better experience with the surgery of the inguinal hernia and it's a low cost procedure. the falci-lichtenstein repair is effective,rapid, causes fewer pain, fast recovery and allows less experienced inguinal hernia surgeons to accomplish it successfully.

O objetivo é mostrar pontos de contato entre as duas obras, ressaltando compreens es que se aproximam sobre a linguagem, e mostrando o avan o teórico de cada uma na abordagem das quest es que elegeram como foco. ABSTRACT: The present article aims to build a dialogue between the books Marxism and the philosophy oflanguage, by Bakhtin/Volóchinov, and The German ideology by Marx and Engels. Our purpose is to show out some contact points between both books, emphasizing some approach understandings about language. We also intend to show the theoretical advance in the approach of matters in each area they focused on.
A antimetafísica de Voltaire um alento de modernidade crítica para as identidades contemporaneas The anti-metaphysis of Voltaire a breath of critic modernity to the contemporary identities

Through Voltaire′s Work “The Ignorant Philosopher” I intend to show a new possibility of critical use to cultural criticism of Enlightment, and so I hope to prove Its force as a thought-tool against all sort of neoconservantist behaviors, most of them usually influenced by the cultural relativist rhetoric.

Infinitely many exotic monotone Lagrangian tori in CP^2
Renato Vianna
Mathematics , 2014,
Abstract: Related to each degeneration from CP^2 to CP(a^2,b^2,c^2), for (a,b,c) a Markov triple - positive integers satisfying a^2 + b^2 + c^2 = 3abc - there is a monotone Lagrangian torus, which we call T(a^2,b^2,c^2). We employ techniques from symplectic field theory to prove that no two of them are Hamiltonian isotopic to each other.
