Abstract: sweetpotato cultivars currently grown were selected essentially for their use in human consumption, with little regard for their other potential uses such as ethanol production or animal feed. the objective of this work was to estimate population parameters and genotypic, phenotypic and environmental correlations associated with these traits. thirty-nine sweetpotato genotypes from the germplasm bank of the universidade federal de lavras were assayed in a randomized complete block design trial with 2 replications. the estimated genetic (cvg) and environmental (cve) coefficients of variation, the broad sense heritabilities (ha2) and the b= cvg/cve ratio favor selection of the majority of the traits analysed, with estimates generally higher than 9.52%, 1.44 and 79.31% for cvg, cvg/cve and ha2, respectively. for all pairs of traits studied, the genotypic and phenotypic correlations had the same sign, and were similar in both magnitude and level of significance. in the cases where correlations were significant, the estimates of the genotypic correlations were slightly higher than those of the phenotypic correlations, and both were higher than environmental correlations as was observed between total fresh root yield x percentage of dry matter in roots, percentage of dry matter in the leaves+vines x total fresh root yield, mean root shape ratings x general root shape ratings. no genetic or phenotypic correlation was observed beetween percentage of root dry matter and measured root density. the selection and recommendation of sweet potato genotypes based on a set of these studied characteristics (depending on the segment of market to be explored), will make possible the complete use of this precious vegetable genetic resource, and its more intense adoption in national agriculture.

Abstract: the south american tomato pinworm was first detected in brazil in 1980 and today it is among the major pests of tomato in brazil. the control of this pest has been done primarily with the use of insecticides, and three sprays per week may be necessary in extreme cases. wild tomato accessions such as s. pennellii la-716 possess high levels of insect resistance, mediated by high foliar contents of acylsugars. the objectives of this study were obtain improved tomato genotypes with high contents of leaf acylsugars, and to assess their levels of resistance to the south american tomato pinworm tuta absoluta. these genotypes were obtained from segregating (f2) populations from the cross between af-8665 (an elite low as tomato line) and lines bpx370e-30-275-11-7, bpx370e-30-275-11-8, bpx370e-30-380-68-6 and bpx370e-30-380-68-8 (pre-commercial high as inbreds derived from an original interspecific cross between s. lycopersicum x s. pennellii la-716). f2 plants selected for high as contents were cloned and subsequently tested for pinworm resistance. the high as genotypes showed smaller ovoposition counts and lower plant damage levels than low as genotypes (commercial or not). even though high as genotypes were generally more resistant to the south american tomato pinworm than low as genotypes, their actual levels of resistance may be background-dependent: high as clones with bpx-410h background had slightly higher levels of resistance than high as clones with bpx-370g background. clones bpx-410h-01pl#281, bpx-410h-04pl#348 and bpx-410h-04pl#481 had the highest levels of pinworm resistance, and were recommended for further use in breeding programs.
Castration-resistant prostate cancer: systemic therapy in 2012

Abstract: prostate cancer is the most common non-cutaneous neoplasm in the male population worldwide. it is typically diagnosed in its early stages, and the disease exhibits a relatively indolent course in most patients. despite the curability of localized disease with prostatectomy and radiation therapy, some patients develop metastatic disease and die. although androgen deprivation is present in the majority of patients with metastatic prostate cancer, a state of androgen resistance eventually develops. castration-resistant prostate cancer, defined when there is progression of disease despite low levels of testosterone, requires specialized care, and improved communication between medical and urologic oncologists has been identified as a key component in delivering effective therapy. despite being considered a chemoresistant tumor in the past, the use of a prostate-specific antigen has paved the way for a new generation of trials for castration-resistant prostate cancer. docetaxel is a life-prolonging chemotherapy that has been established as the standard first-line agent in two phase iii clinical trials. cabazitaxel, a novel taxane with activity in cancer models resistant to paclitaxel and docetaxel, is the only agent that has been compared to a chemotherapy control in a phase iii clinical trial as a second-line therapy; it was found to prolong the overall survival of patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer previously treated with docetaxel when compared to mitoxantrone. other agents used in this setting include abiraterone and sipuleucel-t, and novel therapies are continually being investigated in an attempt to improve the outcome for patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer.
On the gravitational angular momentum of rotating sources

Abstract: The gravitational energy-momentum and angular momentum satisfy the algebra of the Poincare group in the full phase space of the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity. The expression for the gravitational energy-momentum may be written as a surface integral in the three-dimensional spacelike hypersurface, whereas the definition for the angular momentum is given by a volume integral. It turns out that in practical calculations of the angular momentum of the gravitational field generated by localized sources like rotating neutron stars, the volume integral reduces to a surface integral, and the calculations can be easily carried out. Similar to previous investigations in the literature, we show that the total angular momentum is finite provided a certain asymptotic behaviour is verified. We discuss the dependence of the gravitational angular momentum on the frame, and argue that it is a measure of the dragging of inertial frames.
The energy-momentum of plane-fronted gravitational waves in the teleparallel equivalent of GR

Abstract: We show that in the framework of the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity the gravitational energy-momentum of plane-fronted gravitational waves contained in an arbitrary three-dimensional volume V may be easily obtained and is non-negative in the frame of static observers.
Electrodynamics in accelerated frames revisited

Abstract: Maxwell's equations are formulated in arbitrary moving frames by means of tetrad fields, which are interpreted as reference frames adapted to observers in space-time. We assume the existence of a general distribution of charges and currents in an inertial frame. Tetrad fields are used to project the electromagnetic fields and sources on accelerated frames. The purpose is to study several configurations of fields and observers that in the literature are understood as paradoxes. For instance, are the two situations, (i) an accelerated charge in an inertial frame, and (ii) a charge at rest in an inertial frame described from the perspective of an accelerated frame, physically equivalent? Is the electromagnetic radiation the same in both frames? Normally in the analysis of these paradoxes the electromagnetic fields are transformed to (uniformly) accelerated frames by means of a coordinate transformation of the Faraday tensor. In the present approach coordinate and frame transformations are disentangled, and the electromagnetic field in the accelerated frame is obtained through a frame (local Lorentz) transformation. Consequently the fields in the inertial and accelerated frames are described in the same coordinate system. This feature allows the investigation of paradoxes such as the one mentioned above.
Altitude e coordenadas geográficas na estimativa da temperatura mínima média decendial do ar no estado do Rio Grande do Sul

Abstract: the objective of this work was to estimate ten-day mean minimum air temperature (tm) using altitude and the geographic coordinates latitude and longitude for the rio grande do sul state, brazil. normal ten-day mean minimum air temperature of 41 counties in the state of rio grande do sul, from 1945 to 1974 were used. correlation analysis, path analysis of causal variables (altitude, latitude and longitude) on tm, and parameters estimate of multiple linear regression equations were performed by the stepwise backward method, using tm as dependent variable and altitude, latitude and longitude as independent variables, for the 36 ten-day periods of the year. pearson's linear correlation coefficient between estimated and observed tm, calculated for tem counties using data of the series of meteorological observations from 1975 to 2004 were used as independent data sets. the ten-day mean minimum air temperature may be estimated from the geographic coordinates in the state of rio grande do sul. altitude and latitude best explain the variation of the tm.
Propaganda de medicamentos no Brasil: é possível regular?

Abstract: the regulation of medication advertising in brazil has four weak points. inspection and punishment of irregularities is carried out a posteriori to the infraction being committed (when the population has already been exposed to a sanitary risk). the fines charged by the brazilian sanitary surveillance agency (anvisa) have a derisory value compared to investments in advertising. there is no mechanism that prevents fines from being transferred to prices. the phrase "if symptoms persist, consult your doctor", rather than warning about the risks of self-medication, encourages using at least the first medication without a prescription, advising a visit to the doctor only if symptoms persist. anvisa data and academic studies reveal that 90% to 100% of advertising shown in the media contains irregularities. thus, the anvisa collegiate board of directors resolution 102/2000, which seeks to regulate the sector, makes up a system that benefits the infractor and keeps the population at risk. this work analyses alternative regulation, looking at advertising's previous compliance statute through the surveillance system; it studies international statutes and proposes an alteration in the structure of the current model, inserting the logic of sanitary risk prevention.

Abstract: this article analyzes some concepts relating to marketing, advertising, medications, regulation and manipulation. it discusses ethical and health surveillance parameters of drugs advertising for the general public. the focus of this work is the analysis of contradictions from a conceptual point of view between the practice of pharmaceutical advertising as a tool for the increase of sales and the conquest of markets versus the policy of rational use of medicines. academic studies and monitoring of drugs advertising conducted by the national health surveillance agency show that the contents of the advertising pieces oriented towards the general public overestimate the - sometimes dubious - qualities of their medication, focusing almost exclusively on the benefits and put them in a central position in the therapeutic process. they also fail to mention the risks inherent in their use. rather than focusing on regulatory proposals aimed at creating constraints to this practice, this article discusses the impossibility, considering the interests of public health, of the coexistence of marketing with the policies for the correct, rational and safe use of drugs.
