Brentano’s Psychology And Logic And The Basis Of Twardowski’s Theory Of Presentations  [cached]
Robin Rollinger
The Baltic International Yearbook of Cognition, Logic and Communication , 2009, DOI: 10.4148/biyclc.v4i0.130
Abstract: It is widely known that Kasimir Twardowski was a student of Franz Brentano. In view of the fact that Brentano generally had great impact through his lectures, especially during his Vienna period (1874-1895), and consequently became one of the towering figures of Austrian philosophy, it is a matter of no small interest to determine how he influenced Twardowski. I’ll first consider presentations as they are described in Brentano’s psychology and then proceed to discuss Brentano’s account of the latter in his logic.
Intentionality and the stream of thought: Brentano and James
An?elkovi? Miroslava
Theoria, Beograd , 2008, DOI: 10.2298/theo0803015a
Abstract: Philosophers have not done much research on the connection between philosophical and psychological views of Franz Brentano and William James. This connection is of particular historical interest because their views influenced Edmund Husserl, but it also bears philosophical importance as one can show why in James' philosophy of mind there is no correlate to Brentano's notion of intentionality which designates the relationship between mental and physical phenomena. Given this, intentionality, if there is room for it in James' psychology, would be the relation which holds between the correlates of these phenomena in his analysis of consciousness. I am trying to show that there is such a correlation between mental phenomena and James' notion of transitive segments, as well as between physical phenomena and James' notion of substantive segments of consciousness. The question is whether the segments of consciousness stand in the relationship of intentionality and I argue that this is not the case.

Abstract: Although interpreters have long recognized Franz Brentano’s powerful impact on his students, the career-long persistence of his hold on Edmund Husserl is still underestimated. Conventional narratives of Husserl’s development describe his mentor’s pervasive early impact followed by a sharp break from the master’s philosophy. My essay challenges this account by arguing that Husserl’s shift toward transcendental phenomenology within the domain of ethics marked a reappraisal – even a reinvigoration – of Brentanian premises, rather than an attempt to discard them. Freud e Brentano: mais que um flerte filosófico = Freud and Brentano: more than a philosophical flirt  [cached]

Psico , 2013,
It would not be exaggerated to to say that the importance of the relationship between Freud and Brentano has been neglected. Although the issue has not been ignored, among the names that influenced Freud, Brentano’s is certainly one of the most deleted. This essay aims to highlight some imprints of the philosopher in the formulation of metapsychology. We begin by highlighting the historical evidence of the closeness of the relationship Freud-Brentanto. Next, we investigated the concept of intentionality in order to emphasize the proximity of Brentano and Freud’s conceptions about the representation in two main points: the first is the impossibility that an act of representation occurs in the absence of the represented object and the second is the fact that the represented object does not necessarily exist as a real thing. After these developments, we conclude by pointing to other brentanians imprints on Freudian theory and therefore to the richness of this research.
Brentano's Account of Anselm's Proof of Immortality in Monologion 68-69
Susan Krantz Gabriel
The Saint Anselm Journal , 2004,
Abstract: In his lectures on medieval philosophy, the German philosopher Franz Brentano (1838-1917) noted that Anselm had proposed a "peculiar" proof of immortality. This proof caught Brentano's attention because it is what he would call a "psychological" proof, that is to say, it rests on facts about our mental or psychic activities. Anselm tells us, roughly, that the purpose of our existence is to love God (a psychological activity, in Brentano's terms), and that God would not will that our activity of loving him should cease, therefore our souls are immortal. There is an interesting play between Anselm's claim that the soul amet summam essentiam (loves the supreme being) and Brentano's report that Anselm says the love of God is the soul's hoechste Bestimmung (highest determination). Perhaps it is Brentano's peculiar interpretation of Anselm's argument for immortality that turns an activity of the soul into a defining property of the soul. In any event, Brentano is right that Anselm's proof of immortality in the Monologion is remarkable, and apparently it has gone largely unnoticed and unstudied so far.

Abstract:The German philosopher Ernst Cassirer established his prominent role in contemporary philosophical arena with his system of the Philosophy of Symbolic Forms. A thoroughgoing analysis of the system shows that in his thinking there lies potentially a systematic consideration concerning the ideal of psychology as a science, and it is this psychological consideration that both gives his thought its characteristic features and lays down the foundation for his system. Only if with the intellectual and terminological resources from phenomenology and the phenomenological psychology as represented by such figures as Franz Brentano, Edmund Husserl and William James as guiding referential framework can Cassirer's implicit ideal of psychology be thematized explicitly, thus disclosing the possible theoretical realization of the ideal. This explication of Cassirer further establishes the thesis that in this specific way Cassirer, independently and incidentally, provides a logically forceful historical verification of the truth and necessity of the phenomenological approach to psychology.
Franz Brentano: equivocidad del ser y objeto intencional
Porta, Mario Ariel González;
Kriterion: Revista de Filosofia , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-512X2002000100007
Abstract: this work aims to prove that the brentanian notion of intentionality, and particularly his conceptions of intentional object and immanence, cannot be properly understood but in the boundaries of the author' s ontological concerns, particularly his former defense and later denial of the equivocity of being.

Franz Kafkas Deutsch

Linguistik Online , 2003,
Abstract: The present paper is concerning with Franz Kafka's German. It calls in question the theories about the poor, impoverished and insular character of Kafka's Prague (ghetto) German in isolation from a German speaking community. The paper presents Franz Kafka's in its temporal, regional and social context: (1) His German participates in the contemporary development of the German language. (2) The German of his private letters and diaries is a variety with several spoken and Bavarian characteristic features in the phonology, morphology, syntax and lexicon, but the German of his official letters and manucripts contains largely only lexical, especially terminological law Austriacisms. So Franz Kafka had a good command of all language registers. (3) Some phenomena in Franz Kafka's German have parallels in Czech and Yiddish. Some of these phenomena are to interpret as Baiuvarisms too, some other as collective phenomena in the German speaking in Bohemia.
