Abstract: the present study had the objective of developing a non-conventional method to determine mechanical damage in soybean seeds, and also to verify its relation to the physiological quality, using the image analysis technique. unlike the traditional tests, this technique analyzes seeds without destroying them, and together with the germination test, it can be observed that the damage detected in the image analysis is really important because of its influence on the germination process. the research was carried out with three cultivars of soybean (ft-2, ft-10 and iac-2), possessing different contents of lignin in the seed coat (different resistance performance for mechanical damage). the mechanical damage had been caused by means of the pendulum test in six different regions of the seeds. the image analysis identified external and internal mechanical damage in soybean seeds, and was also efficient in detecting weathering and stink-bug damage.

Abstract: Structural differences such as abnormalities, damage and free spaces in seeds may affect germination. The aim of this study was to study the relationship between eggplant seed morphology and seed germination. Ten seed lots of the eggplant cultivar Embu were evaluated by X-ray image analysis and the germination test. Seed image analysis was performed by Image Pro Plus software and the whole seed area and free space between the embryo and endosperm were measured. The internal seed area filled by the embryo and endosperm was calculated from the difference between the whole seed and free space areas. Based on these results and visual seed analysis, seeds were classified into three categories and information on germination was obtained for each one. X-ray image analysis provides a perfect view of the internal seed parts and for seed morphology studies. An increase in seed area filled by the endosperm and embryo does not improve seed germination. Mechanical seed damage and deteriorated tissues can adversely affect seed germination. O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar a rela o existente entre a morfologia interna de sementes de berinjela e a germina o. Para tanto, sementes de berinjela, representadas por 10 lotes (cultivar Embu), foram avaliadas por meio do teste de raios X, sendo posteriormente submetidas ao teste de germina o. As imagens das sementes foram analisadas com o software Image Pro Plus e o espa o livre entre o embri o e o endosperma de cada semente foi mensurado calculando-se o espa o da cavidade interna das sementes ocupado pelo embri o e endosperma, por diferen a; com base nestes dados e na análise visual das sementes, foi realizada a classifica o das sementes em três categorias e os resultados foram confrontados com os dados de germina o. Conclui-se que a análise de raios X permite a visualiza o das partes componentes das sementes de berinjela e, assim, possibilita o estudo da rela o entre a morfologia interna e a germina o. Characterization of mechanical damage in coffee seeds by the LERCAFé test1 Caracteriza o de danos mecanicos em sementes de cafeeiro pelo teste LERCAFé

Abstract: The present work aimed at evaluating the use of the LERCAFé test to estimate germination and characterize mechanical damage in coffee seeds. The experiment was conducted in the Laboratory of Seed Research at the Universidade Federal de Vi osa, Vi osa-MG. Coffea arabica seeds were submitted to the following treatments: Lot 1 (0% of damaged seeds), Lot 2 (5% of damaged seeds), Lot 3 (10% of damaged seeds) and Lot 4 (15% of damaged seeds). The mechanical damage was caused with the use of the Pulverisette 14 (Fritsch) apparatus. The damage was caused randomly and individually in the seeds, and the lots proportionally combined undamaged and damaged seeds, totaling 1600 seeds per lot. The seeds were evaluated by the germination and LERCAFé tests. For this type of damage, the germination results achieved by the LERCAFé test presented high correlation with those achieved by the germination test (r=0,9550). Although being randomly caused in the seeds, in other words, without reaching a pre-determined region, the mechanical damage was always characterized by a breach in the embryo region and/or in the region opposite to the embryo and the edges of these breaches presented a green stain. The LERCAFé test was efficient to estimate germination and characterize mechanical damage in coffee seeds. Lots of seeds mechanically damaged presented a sharp decrease in the germination power. Objetivou-se neste trabalho avaliar a utiliza o do teste LERCAFé para estimar a germina o e caracterizar danos mecanicos em sementes de cafeeiro. O experimento foi conduzido no Laboratório de Pesquisa de Sementes da Universidade Federal de Vi osa, Vi osa-MG. Utilizaram-se sementes de cafeeiro arábica, submetidas aos seguintes tratamentos: Lote 1 (0% de sementes danificadas), Lote 2 (5% de sementes danificadas), Lote 3 (10% de sementes danificadas) e Lote 4 (15% de sementes danificadas). Os danos mecanicos foram provocados com uso de equipamento Pulverisette 14 (Fritsch). O dano foi causado individualmente nas sementes, ao acaso, e os lotes foram obtidos misturando-se proporcionalmente sementes sem dano com sementes danificadas, num total de 1600 sementes por lote. As sementes foram avaliadas pelos testes de germina o e LERCAFé. Para este tipo de dano, os resultados de germina o obtidos pelo teste LERCAFé apresentaram alta correla o com os obtidos pelo teste de germina o (r=0,9550). Abstract: Avaliaram-se os efeitos de danos mecanicos ocasionados por cinco sistemas dosadores de sementes, em quatro culturas. Amostras das sementes foram coletadas antes e após passarem pelos sistemas dosadores e foram submetidas a testes de pureza, germina o e vigor. N o houve diferen a entre os efeitos de danos mecanicos ocasionados pelos sistemas dosadores empregados nas sementes de milho. Para as sementes de feij o, menores efeitos foram verificados quando da utiliza o dos dosadores pneumático a vácuo e copo dosador. O sistema rotor acanalado causou menores danos às sementes de arroz e os sistemas disco horizontal perfurado e copo dosador foram os que menos danificaram as sementes de soja. O sistema dosador pneumático a vácuo ocasionou o maior índice de dano mecanico nas sementes de soja. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Semeadoras; distribuidores de sementes; rotor acanalado. Effects of mechanical damage caused by five seed metering systems were evaluated in four crops. Seed samples were collected before and after passing through the measuring systems and submitted to tests of purity, germination and vigor. There was no difference in the level of mechanical damage caused by the metering systems used for maize seeds. For common bean seeds, minor effects were verified when using the vacuum metering disk and the feed cup. The fluted feed system showed the best performance for rice seeds, and the horizontal perforated disk and feed cup systems exhibited the best results for soybean seeds. The vacuum metering disk system caused the highest level of mechanical damage to soybean seeds. KEY-WORDS: Planter machine; seed distributor; fluted feed.

Abstract: bean seed (phaseolus vulgaris l.) quality is greatly affected by harvesting, drying, handling and storage activities during the seed production process. in these operations, seeds collide repeatedly against metal surfaces predisposing them to mechanical damage. in this context, this investigation studied the effect of the amount and different impact pressures on bean seed quality. seeds from one lot of the iac-carioca dry bean cultivar were thrown by means of an air jet at two different pressures (551.6 and 965.3 kpa) one, three and five times against a metal surface positioned at a distance of 30cm. a factorial squeme was used with two evaluation times (before and after storage), two pressures and three numbers of impacts. mechanical damage was evaluated by image analysis using x-rays of the seeds and digital photographs of the seedlings. seed physiological quality was evaluated by germination and vigor tests before and after four months storage. the results showed a direct relationship between the increase in the amount and pressures of impact and the decrease in seed physiological quality; the impact pressure provided more severe and immediate effects than the number of impacts. the image analysis technique allowed the understanding of the effect of the mechanical damage that appeared inside the seeds. in this way image analysis proved to be an interesting technique to study mechanical damage in bean seeds.

Abstract: this experiment aimed to evaluate two types of harvest combines, on seed quality of two soybean cultivars harvested at three times of - day. the conventional combine worked moving at 5,0km.h-1, cylinder speed 750 rotations per minute (rpm). the axial flow combine worked moving at 8,0km.h-1, rotor speed 650 rotations per minute (rpm). the soybean cultivars used were brs 184 and brs 133. the germination test, vigor test, tetrazolium, mechanical damages and humidity test were used to evaluate the seed quality. both harvest combines did not present statistical differences in mechanical damage and physiological quality. the seed moisture content varied during the day, but the results confirmed that it was always in a range of ideal moisture for the soybean mechanical harvest. therefore the mechanical damage was controlled and consequently the seeds had good physiological quality regardless of the harvest combine used. there were variations in the soybean seed moisture content during the day, that could be lower by up to three percentage points at the end of the afternoon (6 p.m.) than at the start of harvesting (10 a.m.). neither the conventional nor the axial flow combine harvesters, when used with specific adjustments, caused differences in soybean seed physiological quality.

Abstract: image analysis is a very promising technique to determine damage in seeds. this precise method examines seeds individually using enlarged images in which damaged areas as well as their exact location and extension can be found and examined in detail. the objective of the present investigation was to evaluate the efficiency of the image analysis technique (x-ray) to identify mechanical and chinch bug damages in common bean seeds and its relation with their physiological quality. the treatments consisted of seeds of different lots of the pérola cultivar. each lot was submitted to the action of the "bc impact simulator, model 2000" to cause different types and intensity of mechanical damage. the samples were submitted to the x-ray test and to the germination test (first count), to determine the possible relationship between damage and seed germination. simultaneously, the x-ray test was compared with the tetrazolium test. for the interpretation of the x-ray test, the severity and location of mechanical and chinch-bug damages were considered. the x-ray test is efficient to detect these damages in common bean seeds and that it could relate the damages with eventual problems in seed germination.

Abstract: image analysis is a very promising technique to determine mechanical damage in seeds. this precise method examines seeds individually using enlarged images in which damaged areas as well as their exact location and extension can be found and examined in detail. since this is a non-destructive method, analyzed seeds can be submitted to physiological tests to establish the relationship between mechanical damage and quality loss. the objective of the present investigation was to study the effects of mechanical damage on corn/maize seed vigor using image analysis. fifty seeds from co 32, ag 6690 and attack cultivars were visually selected to form a sample of whole seeds with varying degrees of mechanical damage. the seeds were x-rayed, photographed (ventral and dorsal sides) and submitted to a cold test. photographs were repeated after the cold test. images were transferred to a computer so that pre and post cold test images could be examined simultaneously on the monitor to determine the possible relationship between cause and effect. results indicated that the method under study permits association of mechanical damage with eventual losses caused to corn/maize seed vigor.
Qualidade de sementes de cultivares precoces de soja produzidas em três épocas

Abstract: O trabalho foi conduzido na regi o de Goiania, com o objetivo de avaliar a qualidade fisiológica e sanitária das sementes de sete cultivares precoces de soja (EMGOPA 304, EMGOPA 309, EMGOPA 316, EMBRAPA 1, EMBRAPA 4, Rainha e Itiquira), produzidas em três épocas de semeadura (convencional, em 20/11; antecipada, em 30/10; e retardada, em 30/12/1995). O delineamento experimental foi de blocos casualizados, com três repeti es, em esquema de parcelas subdivididas. A qualidade fisiológica foi avaliada com base na germina o em rolo de papel e em areia e no vigor, pelo teste de tetrazólio, enquanto a sanidade foi avaliada pelo teste do papel de filtro. Os resultados obtidos permitem concluir que: a qualidade fisiológica e sanitária das sementes é influenciada pelas cultivares e épocas de semeadura; a qualidade das sementes produzidas na semeadura antecipada para o final de outubro é afetada por condi es adversas de umidade, danos mecanicos e incidência de patógenos, especialmente Phomopsis sojae, enquanto na semeadura retardada para o final de dezembro é afetada por danos mecanicos.

Abstract: As danifica es provocadas nas sementes por opera es mecanizadas realizadas durante a produ o podem atuar negativamente na qualidade do material obtido. Essa redu o qualitativa, segundo a literatura específica, pode ser agravada quando a injúria interage com microrganismos presentes na superfície das sementes ou no solo, por ocasi o da semeadura. Dessa forma, o presente trabalho, realizando inocula es de patógenos e injúrias nas regi es da calota endospermática, do ápice do escutelo e da camada negra em sementes de milho (Zea mays L.), objetivou verificar as rela es existentes entre as danifica es mecanicas, a presen a de microrganismos e o desempenho das sementes. Após a realiza o de testes sanitários e fisiológicos, concluiu-se que as danifica es, particularmente quando Aspergillus sp. e Fusarium moniliforme se encontram presentes nas sementes, promovem prejuízos qualitativos progressivos à medida que se aproximam do embri o. Quando comparadas entre si, as interferências negativas de Aspergillus sp. e de F. moniliforme s o mais evidentes do que as de Penicillium sp.
