Abstract: this paper aims to analyze the male sexual initiation, identifying the way low income youth understand it. the theoretical and conceptual references were those in which sexuality reflects wider relations that involve the person itself and society. the methodological plan features a case study under the social sciences perspectives, supported by a hermeneutic and dialectical approach. it involves 19 male youngsters aged 15 to17. during young men’s conversations, it is observed that certain sources of information are valued in preference to others, on the one hand there is a range between to permit and to forbid subjects usually related to sexuality and particularly to sexual initiation. youngsters associate it with something complicated, pleasure-giving, affective and consider it a learning environment. study discoveries indicate the investments needed to supply the public health field in order to develop technologies to provide the young men sexual demands, changing them from private forums to sexual initiation to an integral health care to young men.

Abstract: the main objective of this study was to analyze the narratives of young university students about the experience of sexual initiation. the theoretical and conceptual references used were the sexual scripts of our society that inform people about when, how, where and with whom they should have their sexual experiences, indicating how to act sexually and the reasons why they have to practice some kind of sexual activity. the method used was a qualitative study of narratives from the perspective of dialectic hermeneutics. the methodological design involves the comprehension of sceneries, contexts, environments and characters of the narratives about sexual initiation. the analysis refers to narratives of university students in the city of rio de janeiro. among the meanings of sexual initiation, we emphasize sexual intercourse, the demarcation of a stage of life, the awakening to the opposite sex and the discovery of the body. we observed that the young men's narratives were coherent with what is considered masculine, present in the discourse of different generations. it is concluded that the young men should be encouraged to participate in actions combining health and education aimed at promotion of sexual and reproductive health.

Abstract: this study investigated contraceptive use during first sexual intercourse among 2.790 young men and women. the gravad household survey in three brazilian capital cities involved interviews in a probabilistic sample. a hierarchical logistic regression analysis was used. variables grouped as: macro-social, socialization and sexual initiation, context of sexual initiation, and characteristics of the interviewee and his or her partner. the prevalence of contraceptive use was 68.3% for women and 65.3% for men. among women, contraception use was associated to: per capita monthly family income, color/race, and the use of women's magazines as a source of information on pregnancy and contraception. for both genders, use was more frequent when partners discussed pregnancy prevention before intercourse, when sexual initiation was delayed and in a motel, and when the partner was patient. the interval between the start of the relationship and sexual initiation appeared associated to use during sexual initiation for men. results suggest that macro-social factors determine more frequent contraception use during sexual initiation for women, while for men the relational context is more important.

Abstract: objective: to analyze age and condom use at first sexual intercourse among brazilian adolescents at two periods: 1998 and 2005. methods: representative samples of the brazilian urban population were interviewed during a household survey for two studies, carried out in 1998 and 2005. interviewees included 670 sexually active young people (aged 16 to 19) who were selected for the study, 312 in 1998 and 358 in 2005. pearson's chi-square test and fisher's exact test (±<5%) were used to analyze the weighted data. results: in 2005, 61.6% of young interviewees had practiced sex and the average age for first intercourse was 14.9, with no significant difference to young interviewees in 1998. condom use during first sexual intercourse increased significantly in both stable relationships (48.5% in 1998 vs. 67.7% in 2005) and casual relationships (47.2% in 1998 vs. 62.6% in 2005) across almost all segments. there were differences by gender, skin color and schooling for both age of first sexual intercourse and condom use, as per findings in 1998. decreases in condom use for young people who were sexually active before the age of 14, across all types of partnerships, were marked in the southeast region and for people with more schooling. conclusions: as in other countries, there was a trend towards the stabilizing of the age of first sexual intercourse for young people aged 15 to 19. the postponement of the first sexual intercourse is more frequent among youth with more years of schooling, a theme that should be discussed in the planning of sexual education and sti prevention initiatives for adolescents. in terms of reductions in vulnerability to hiv, the increase in condom use at first sexual intercourse is both relevant and significant.
