Abstract: objective: to assess the validity of the estimates obtained through telephone survey and to measure the impact of the post-stratification weighting factor to adjust estimates. methods: the same questionnaire was completed by two independent samples of the population living in the municipality of belo horizonte city (barreiro and west regions). one sample (n=440) completed the questionnaire of vigitel 2008 (telephone survey), and the other (n=4,048) of saúde em beagá (face to face household interview). the results of the two samples for 18 health-related variables were compared by means of test statistics. at first, residents who had a landline telephone line were compared to those who reported not having a telephone line; then, vigitel estimates, with and without post-stratification weight, were compared with saúde em beagá estimates. results: subjects who owned a landline telephone line had indicators for better economic conditions (housing, schooling, and skin color); higher prevalence of chronic diseases; lower exposure to risk factors for chronic diseases; and improved access to health services, compared to the those who reported not having a telephone line. most vigitel estimates (without post-stratification weight) were similar to the sample of saúde em beagá that reported owning a residential landline, showing no major impact of the methodology to obtain this data (lower information bias). even without post-stratification weight, vigitel estimates were similar to those of saúde em beagá. with post-stratification weight, the estimates of "number of residents", "skin color" and "physical activity" did not differ from those obtained by the face to face survey. conclusion: the results of both surveys were very similar. because of the lower cost, the telephone interview is a good option in public health for the behavioral risk-factor surveillance system.

Abstract: objective: the aim of this study was to compare estimates of pap smear and mammogram screening obtained from household and telephone surveys in women living in s?o paulo in 2008, according to sociodemographic characteristics, and to measure the differences observed from those estimates. methods: the study compared data from isa - capital 2008, a household survey conducted in s?o paulo by universidade de s?o paulo (usp), universidade estadual de campinas (unicamp) and the state health department with support from the municipal health department, and vigitel - s?o paulo, a telephone-based surveillance of risk and protective factors for chronic diseases. estimates of pap smear and mammography, as well as their realization in the year prior to the interview, were compared according to type of survey (household/telephone) by poisson regression adjusted for age and education. results: there were no statistically significant differences between the estimates obtained by vigitel and isa - capital as to the prevalence of mammography in the year prior to the interview. however, global estimates of the pap smear at least once in life and in the past year, as well as mammograghy at least once in life, show statistically significant differences, with higher prevalence rates of coverage among those interviewed by telephone. conclusion: the results indicate a tendency to overestimate coverage of mammography and pap smear in the telephone survey data, which indicates the need for new studies that also contribute to a better understanding of the differences observed by different types of surveys.

Abstract: creative and innovative strategies to recruit smokers are essential for improving tobacco control activities. currently in brazil, through health warning messages on cigarette packs, there is a permanent and intense spread of messages that provoke feelings of loss associated with smoking, which is important to encourage access to smoking quitlines. the study analyzed the call rate for telephone counseling after introducing a new strategy for reactive recruitment focused on the theme "smoking causes shortness of breath", adapted to the subway setting in rio de janeiro, as compared to the rates for two existing reactive strategies. regardless of age bracket, there was a higher response to the new proposed strategy. despite the major awareness-raising in brazil concerning the ills of tobacco, new communications formats approaching personally relevant themes can increase the number and range of smokers recruited for telephone counseling to support cessation.

Ayed, Choukri Ben;
Educa??o & Sociedade , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-73302012000300008
Abstract: this paper scrutinizes the advancement of knowledge on socio-spatial inequalities in access to knowledge in france. although this object encompasses many societal issues, empirical research devoted to it remains embryonic. the comprehensive one we present here is a relatively isolated case. after recalling the overall situation of schooling inequality in france, the text focuses on the research genesis. it particularly emphasizes the methodological stakes of studying the variations of educational attainment in different contexts of schooling and the need to avoid dissociating the impact of social and spatial factors in our analyses. taking a combination of both into account is now one of the levers that renew the approaches in sociology of education.
Cren as coletivas e desigualdades culturais
Lahire Bernard
Educa??o & Sociedade , 2003,
