Reprodu??o de Stellifer rastrifer (Jordan) (Teleostei, Sciaenidae) na Baía de Guaratuba, Paraná, Brasil

Abstract: a total of 1312 individuais of s. rastrifer were sampled from march 1994 to september 1996 at the guaratuba bay, southern brazilian coast. this species is a permanently inhabitant of the mangrove area throughout the year. the weight/length relationship of the species in the region is "in tw =-12,35 + 3,22 in tl", and the individuais may reach 172mm of total length. the analyses of gonadal morphology and gonadossomatic index indicate that s. rastrifer is a multiple spawner species, that reproduces at the mangrove area during a long period of the year. the reproductive activity is more intense during the winter and mainly the spring, when the value of condition factor declines and empty folheies are found in the ovaries.
Reproductive biology and spatio-temporal distribution of Stellifer rastrifer, Stellifer naso and Macrodon ancylodon (Sciaenidae) in the Caeté estuary, northern Brazil

Abstract: this study analyses the spatial and temporal distribution of the dominant sciaenids in the caeté estuary on the northern coast of brazil. samples were taken by otter trawls in four areas of the caeté estuary between october 1996 and august 1997 six bimonthly. stellifer rastrifer, stellifer naso and macrododon ancylodon presented the highest biomass out of eleven species of sciaenidae caught. minimum and mean length at first maturity were calculated and the main spawning periods determined. changes in the spatio-temporal distribution of the three species were related to seasonal changes in estuarine salinity and spawning pulses. larvae and juveniles of s. rastrifer, s. naso and m. ancylodon were found in the inner estuary while larger specimens were more abundant in the outer estuary with higher salinities. m. ancylodon spawned from october to february and rested from april to august whereas s. rastrifer and s. naso spawned throughout the year, though with two peaks, in october-december and june.

Abstract: Ecosystems may reflect environmental changes in many respects, from the debilitation of individuals to alterations in community composition. Equally, population parameters may provide reliable indications of environmental changes. Members of the sciaenid fish genus Stellifer are usually very abundant where they occur, often with two or more species living in sympatry. Here, the population dynamics of three Stellifer species from southeastern Brazil were assessed. Sampling was carried out in shallow marine areas of Caraguatatuba Bay, from August 2003 to October 2004. The species evaluated were Stellifer rastrifer (n=3183), S. brasiliensis (n=357) and S. stellifer (n=116). The area under greater continental influence tended to support more, but smaller individuals. Size variations over time were similar among species and negatively correlated with Krel, which showed smooth fluctuations. The general length-frequency distribution was concentrated between 6.0 and 9.0 cm, and the great majority of females did not present mature gonads during the sampling period. The findings support the existence of a stratification by size for these species, indicating that the area is essential for the development of younger fish. Failure to consider these characteristics for the management of similar areas may have serious implications for these environments. Sciaenídeos do gênero Stellifer s o peixes geralmente muito abundantes e em suas popula es é frequente a ocorrência de duas ou mais espécies simpátricas. No presente trabalho, a dinamica populacional de três espécies de Stellifer do sudeste do Brasil foi avaliada. A amostragem ocorreu em águas rasas das zonas marinhas da Baía de Caraguatatuba, de agosto de 2003 a outubro de 2004. As espécies avaliadas foram Stellifer rastrifer (n = 3.183), S. brasiliensis (n = 357) e S. stellifer (n = 116). Os resultados mostraram que a área sob maior influência continental tende a suportar um número maior de indivíduos menores. Varia es de tamanho ao longo do tempo foram semelhantes entre as espécies e negativamente correlacionadas com o Krel, que apresentou flutua es suaves. Abstract: a quantitative method to estimate fish feeding consumption and energy intake from different food categories through the reconstruction of ingested preys based on hard not digestible body structures is presented. in order to establish the equations of the functional relationships between preys weight and body structures, stomachs of 1.086 specimens of macrodon ancylodon (bloch & schneider, 1801), stellifer rastrifer (jordan, 1889), and stellifer naso (jordan, 1889) fish species were dissected. consequently, preys reconstruction enabled a quantitative evaluation of food categories consumption. results indicate a marked difference in diet composition and energy requirements according to fish species ontogenetic development.
Molecular Phylogeny of Weakfish Species of the Stellifer Group (Sciaenidae, Perciformes) of the Western South Atlantic Based on Mitochondrial and Nuclear Data  [PDF]

Abstract: The phylogenetic relationships within the Stellifer group of weakfishes (Stellifer, Odontoscion, Ophioscion, and Bairdiella) were evaluated using 2723 base pairs comprising sequences of nuclear (rhodopsin, TMO-4C4, RAG-1) and mitochondrial (16S rRNA and COI) markers obtained from specimens of nine species. Our results indicate a close relationship between Bairdiella and Odontoscion, and also that the genus Stellifer is not monophyletic, but rather that it consists of two distinct lineages, one clade containing S. microps/S. naso/S. brasiliensis and the other, S. rastrifer/S. stellifer/Stellifer sp. B, which is closer to Ophioscion than the former clade. The O. punctatissimus populations from the northern and southern Brazilian coast were also highly divergent in both nuclear (0.8% for rhodopsin and 0.9% for RAG-1) and mitochondrial sequences (2.2% for 16S rRNA and 7.3% for COI), which we conclude is consistent with the presence of two distinct species. The morphological similarities of the members of the Stellifer group is reinforced by the molecular data from both the present study and previous analyses, which have questioned the taxonomic status of the Stellifer group. If, on the one hand, the group is in fact composed of four genera (Stellifer, Ophioscion, Odontoscion, and Bairdiella), one of the two Stellifer clades should be reclassified as a new genus. However, if the close relationship and the reduced genetic divergence found within the group is confirmed in a more extensive study, including representatives of additional taxa, this, together with the morphological evidence, would support downgrading the whole group to a single genus. Obviously, these contradictory findings reinforce the need for a more systematic taxonomic revision of the Stellifer group as a whole.

Abstract: bairdiella ronchus is one of the most common species of demersal ichthyofauna in guaratuba bay, south brazil. however, this study reveals that is does not inhabits permanently the mangroove area. individuals with more than 94mm total lenght leave mangroove area in late summer and early auntumn and returming in the spring. when they start ovarian veitellogenesis. during late spring and early summer, the oocytes are hydrated, and empty follicles can be found in the ovaries, indicating that this is the reproductive time for this species as other sciaenidae. b. ronchus is a multiple spawner species.

Abstract: the distribution of kudoa sciaenae cysts (myxozoa), in terms of intensity and prevalence, in the somatic muscles of the sciaenid stellifer minor, shows an apparent preference for the anterior body region, including the head. the observed preference seems to be a consequence of the differential distribution of muscle mass, in the defined area, because when density (cyst/g dry muscle), is considered, all the somatic areas, but not cephalic area, do no show significant differences in terms of mean intensity and prevalence.

Abstract: The results of a Bromeliaceae Juss. floristic survey in the Piraí Mountain, Araraquara complex(Guaratuba Municipality, Paraná State) are presented. Twenty six species included in nine genera and three subfamilies were registered. Bromelioideae presented the highest genera diversity and Tillandsioideae showed the highest species diversity, including twelve species belonging to the genus Vriesea (46%). It was the first register of Nidularium procerum Lindm., Tillandsia stricta Sol. ex Ker Gawl., Vriesea altodaserrae L. B. Sm., Vriesea erythrodactylon (E. Morren) E. Morren ex Mez, Vrieseaflava And.Costa, H. Luther & Wand., Vriesea friburgensis Mez, Vriesea hoehneana L. B. Sm., Vriesea inflata (Wawra) Wawra e Wittrockia superba Lindm. at the Guaratuba Municipality. Dyckia leptostachya Baker was collected for the first time at the coastal zone of Paraná State, being this record done after 40 years since its last register in the State. For each species, information on phenology, geographic distribution and vulnerability level are included. Apresentam-se resultados de levantamento florístico das espécies de Bromeliaceae Juss. no Pico Piraí, Complexo do Araraquara (Guaratuba, Paraná). Verificou-se a ocorrência de 26 espécies pertencentes a nove gêneros e três subfamílias. Bromelioideae englobou a maior diversidade de gêneros e Tillandsioideae registrou-se a maior diversidade de espécies, sendo 12 delas incluídas no gênero Vriesea (46%). As seguintes espécies foram registradas pela primeira vez no município de Guaratuba: Nidularium procerum Lindm., Tillandsia stricta Sol. ex Ker Gawl., Vriesea altodaserrae L. B. Sm., Vriesea erythrodactylon (E. Morren) E. Morren ex Mez, Vriesea flava And. Costa, H. Luther & Wand.,Vriesea friburgensis Mez, Vriesea hoehneana L. B. Sm., Vriesea inflata (Wawra) Wawra e Wittrockia superba Lindm.. Dyckia leptostachya Baker foi registrada pela primeira vez na zona litoranea paranaense e após 40 anos do último registro de coleta da espécie no Estado. S o apresentadas informa es sobre fenologia,distribui o geográfica e grau de vulnerabilidade para cada espécie identificada.
