---------------------------------------- Trilingual glossary (EN-PT-SP) of terms, abbreviations and acronyms frequently used in Immunology. Abstract: drug-induced lupus (dil) has been described as the development of idiopathic systemic lupus erythematous-like symptoms, temporarily associated to the exposition to drugs, and as a rule, the condition is improved with the suspension of the triggering medication. the most classical association is with procainamide and hydralazine. recently, with the introduction of new drugs in the clinical practice, an increase on the number of medications associated with the occurence of the disease has been reported, and the current list includes almost one hundred drugs associated to the occurrence of dil. the basic dil immunologic mechanism, although described for more than 60 years, is not yet fully understood. there are several hypotheses for the drug-induced autoimmunity process, and the phenomenon is generally interpreted as an inappropriate activation of the immune system. among the several theories proposed, the most accepted ones are: the inhibition of the dna methylation by some drugs, what would allow the activation of t-cells; the oxidation of some substances by monocytes, what would generate active metabolites that in turn would lead to the activation of antigen-presenting cells and/or the interference of the metabolites of some drugs with the immune system tolerance. further studies should be conducted in order to elucidate the dil immunopathogeny with the objective of developing specific treatments based on the better knowledge on the pathogenic mechanisms.

Barbosa, Izabela Guimar?es;Huguet, Rodrigo Barreto;Neves, Fernando Silva;Bauer, Moisés Evandro;Teixeira, Ant?nio Lúcio;
Jornal Brasileiro de Psiquiatria , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0047-20852009000100009
Abstract: objective: emerging research has implicated immune factors in the pathogenesis of a variety of neuropsychiatric disorders. the objective of the present paper is to review the studies that investigated the association between bipolar disorder and immune parameters. methods: papers that included the keywords "bipolar to disorder", "mania", "immunology", "cytokines", "chemokines", "interleukins", "interferon" and "tumor necrosis factor" were selected in a systematic review of the literature. the evaluated databases were medline and scopus in the period between 1980 and 2008. results: twenty eight works were found. six studies investigated immune response-related genes; five, auto-antibodies; four, leukocyte population; 13, cytokines and/or immune-related molecules; six, leukocytes in vitro. conclusions: although there is evidence in the literature correlating affective disorders with immune parameters, the results are still inconclusive. bipolar disorder seems to be associated with increased levels of auto-antibodies as well as with a trend for increased immune activation with production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and reduction of the anti-inflammatory parameters.

Porto, Ana Carolina Rusca Correa;Fernandes, Wilson Roberto;Barreira, Maria Cristina Roque;
Ciência Rural , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-84782011001200018
Abstract: rhodococcus equi is an important pathogen in equine neonatology that is ubiquitous and a normal intestinal inhabitant of equines. all foals are exposed at birth, however, some foals develop disease and others do not. this article reviews concepts of the equine immune response, both in the immune adult and susceptible neonate, with respect to this pathogen. humoral immune responses are addressed, with a discussion on the use of hyperimmune plasma as a prophylactic tool. the role that innate immune mechanisms play in the susceptibility of some foals to r. equi infection is also highlighted. likewise, cell-mediated immune components are reviewed, with particular attention directed towards research to develop an effective vaccine for foals.

Lucena, Daniel da Rocha;Ribeiro, Augusto Santana;Lucena, David da Rocha;Lucena, Anna Lívia Pozzi de;Jorge, Rodrigo;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492009000600018
Abstract: this study is a retrospective case series aiming to evaluate the relation between toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis scars and the occurrence of retinal tears. ten patients with retinal tear and toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis examined at the school of medicine of ribeir?o preto clinics hospital, between january 2007 and april 2008, were included. fisher test and qui-square test with significance level of p<0.05 were used. eight cases (80%) had retinal detachment. twelve tears were found and localized mostly in the temporal superior periphery (6 cases, 50%). no statistically significant association between retinal tear and chorioretinal scar localization was observed considering five retinal quadrants (p=0.0828) or three zones (p=0.2507). the occurrence of retinal tears in patients with uveitis may be related to early posterior vitreous detachment caused by the intraocular inflammatory process. no correlation was observed between the localization of retinal tears and chorioretinal scars in this study, which suggests a causative factor not directly related to the presence of a scar.
