Abstract: A presente pesquisa tem como objetivo compreender como ocorre o envolvimento paterno na cria o dos filhos, através da vis o de quatro casais. A coleta dos dados se deu por meio de entrevista semiestruturada, realizada individualmente, a partir de fotos tiradas pelos próprios pais, que registraram o dia a dia da família. Os resultados deste estudo mostram que ser pai, na atualidade, na vis o da mulher e do homem, afasta-se dos modelos tradicionais. O pouco tempo de lazer é uma das dificuldades encontradas pelo pai, que se mostra mais afetuoso com as crian as à medida que se permite ressignificar a sua rela o com os filhos, encontrando-se em um momento de transi o, exercendo antigos e novos papéis. Considerase que o pai busca através de seus próprios parametros, pautados em quest es transgeracionais, construir uma rela o baseada no desejo de realizar trocas afetivas com seus filhos, juntamente com o que a sociedade lhe exige. Abstract The present research aims to understand how the father involvement occurs regarding the raising of their children, under the view of four couples. The data collect occurred through a semi-structured and individual interview, from the pictures taken by the parents themselves, who recorded the everyday life of their families. The results of this study show that being a father, nowadays, according to men and women, is different from the traditional model. The little time for leisure is one of the difficulties faced by the father, who is more affable with children and allows himself to re-signify their relation with them, being in a moment of transition, experiencing old and new roles. It is considered that the father tries, through his own parameters, guided by trans-generational questionings, to build a relation based on the desire to have affective exchanges with their children, following the demands of the society.

Abstract: the gestational period requires a series of adaptations from the father's side, who needs to prepare himself for the new role he will assume vis-à-vis the baby and his/her new family. the present study aimed at investigating father's involvement during the third trimester of gestation. thirty-five fathers, aged 21 to 40, who were expecting their first child, took part in the study. the fathers were interviewed individually and their answers were examined through content analysis. results indicated that many fathers were involved in different ways during their partner's pregnancy, being emotionally connected with the baby and their partner. however, some fathers still found difficulties concerning involvement with their child, seeming not to perceive him/her as real and showing low emotional connection with pregnancy. these data point to signs of change concerning fatherhood during pregnancy, which is increasingly less restricted to the feminine domain.

Abstract: En alguna ocasión se ha escuchado una palabra, que causa un sentimiento y a la vez un recuerdo, que lleva a evocar la adolescencia o la infancia, se recuerda quien la pronunciaba y en que ocasión la decía. Este es el poder que tiene una palabra y más aún si es dicha por el padre, puesto que este es la figura significativa que se lleva en la memoria. De aquí nace el interés de realizar un estudio, en donde se describe y analice la percepción y el sentimiento del adolescente, quien en esta etapa es vulnerable al cambio, ya que está buscando su propia identidad; que con el trato verbal paterno la encontrara sin ninguna dificultad o por el contrario nunca la encontrará.

Abstract: objectives: to reveal the guiding influences and through these to draw up a proposal to stimulate the participation of men in breast feeding, identifying strategies at the various phases in a man's life, from childhood to fatherhood. methods: a descriptive, exploratory and qualitative study was carried out, whose guidelines and proposals were based on examination of statements gathered in the course of semi-structured interviews conducted with 17 couples, living on the bode favela, in recife, in the state of pernambuco, brazil. the statements were interpreted using manifest content analysis, based on the theoretical notion of the historical, social and cultural construction of fatherhood, and subsequently used to determine the guiding influences and draw up proposals. results: the principal guiding influences were found to be the family, the school and the health unit, all of which help to draw up a proposal for the initiation of breast feeding at the outpatients clinic (during prenatal family consultations when the child is aged six months) and the socialization of male and female children in favor of breast feeding. this proposal includes activities that aim to involve the father in breast feeding. conclusions: some significant features of the guiding influences tend to exclude men from the breast feeding process. the essence of this proposal is therefore to serve as a model for stimulating the participation of fathers in breast feeding and for building up a health program to be introduced in schools and health units, as a way of changing the culture of breast feeding and extending its duration.

Abstract: Introdu o: O jardim Botanico do Instituto de Biociências da UNESP de Botucatu / SP faz parte da Rede Brasileira de Jardins Botanicos (RBJB), que cuida dos Jardins Botanicos brasileiros. Objetivos: A Rede tem como um de seus objetivos estimular a preserva o da flora local, utilizando a educa o ambiental como uma de suas ferramentas. Métodos: Este projeto se insere em um projeto amplo da RBJB, denominado “O Jardim Botanico vai à Escola”, onde a escola é visitada e seus alunos assistem a uma aula de sensibiliza o para uma posterior visita ao Jardim Botanico. Em 2009 o Jardim Botanico também participa do Programa “Cultura é Currículo / Lugares de Aprender / A Escola sai da Escola”, da Secretaria de Educa o do Estado de S o Paulo. MéTODOS: Na visita ao JB s o apresentados temas que discorrem a respeito de botanica e ecologia, por meio de uma trilha pela qual os alunos têm a oportunidade de conhecer diversas plantas, suas características e rela es desta com o ambiente. Resultados: até o momento foram recebidos aproximadamente 400 alunos de escolas de Botucatu e regi o. Durante as atividades os graduandos do IB têm a oportunidade de fazer o exercício da profiss o do ensinar, desde a prepara o das aulas por meio de atividades de pesquisa até o ministrar propriamente dito. Desta maneira o projeto faz interface com ensino, extens o e pesquisa cumprindo assim o que se espera da Universidade Pública. Desafios e dificuldades: A grande dificuldade é a manuten o da equipe de graduandos, pois estes acabam migrando para outras atividades onde remunera o das bolsas é mais atraente.
THE SPIRIT OF NINAY: Pedro Paterno and the First Philippine Novel

Abstract: This study of Pedro Paterno’s Nínay (1885) examines the first novel to be published by a Filipino author, setting the work against the background of the author’s activities in Madrid and his work as a writer, host and diplomat. Considering the novel’s status to be that of a fictional-historical archive and literary ethnography, this essay elaborates its foundational discourse on the developing national culture, conceived as intrinsically hybrid, fundamentally an amalgam of Spanish and Asiatic elements. As foregrounded in this reading, the novel makes reference to particular and idiosyncratic aspects of Philippine tradition, explicating its relationship to the Spanish colonial bond that constituted the Philippines as a national territory and overseas possession. Availing itself of the devices of costumbrismo, the narrative of Nínay is staged as an extended act of mourning: that is, its internal structure follows the protocol of the pasiám, the nine-day prayer for the welfare of the soul of the departed loved one. It is this structure that frames the treatment of Nínay’s significance as a ghostly figure that haunts the text, one around whose phantasmatic presence a community of mourners is created and a new kind of discourse is generated: what could be called a spectral allegory of la filipinidad. Against the critical orthodoxy that judges Nínay to be a flawed and superficial work, the present study maps the narrative’s recodification of available elements of an emergent national culture in a narrative as an affair of Tagalog- and Castillian-speaking Filipino characters. Indeed, Paterno, by his authorship of Nínay, subsequent works of ethnography and the libretto for The Dreamed Alliance, the opera that debuted in 1902, offers us the portrait of the author not only as an initiator of discourse in search of a unique Filipino national identity, but also as a medium of his own country’s “spectral nationalism” as an overseas possession of changing empires.

Abstract: the aim of this study was to investigate the relationships among three types of fathering involvement (father-child communication, fathers' participation in caring for their child and fathers' participation in their child's school, cultural and leisure activities) and two aspects of a child's development (academic performance and selfconcept) among children in their first years of schooling. the participants were 97 fathers, mothers and their children, who were attending the first or second grade. to evaluate father involvement from two different perspectives, both the fathers and the mothers completed the evaluation questionnaire about individual and family well-being and the parentchild relationship - fathering version. children's academic performance and selfconcept were evaluated using the school performance test and the self-description questionnaire i, respectively. the greater the frequency of father-child communication, of the fathers' participation in caring for their children, and in their children's school, cultural and leisure activities, the stronger the children's academic performance and the more positive their selfconcept. these results are indicative of the importance of fathers' involvement and point out the need for educational interventions specifically for men.
Sentimentos sobre a paternidade e o envolvimento paterno: um estudo qualitativo

Abstract: the beliefs and expectations concerning father's role in childbearing had an extensive transformation in the last decades. however, little is known about how these changes are affecting the routine of parents and children, and how fathers are evaluating themselves in this role. based on a qualitative approach, the present study aimed to investigate the feelings concerning fatherhood and father involvement in three married fathers who had an only child, preschool-aged. the fathers were interviewed and their answers were examined through content analysis. the results revealed that fathers shared child rearing responsibilities with their wives. fathers believed that their participation in their children's life was very important and they are generally satisfied with fatherhood. however, there were important differences regarding father involvement, especially related to financial responsibilities and time available to their child.

Abstract: paternal involvement in organizational/care tasks and play/leisure activities was studied in a sample of dual-earner portuguese families, with children that attend day-care for several hours a day. socio-demographic variables were analysed in relation to involvement, as well as the impact of father’s participation in children’s organization of secure base behaviour in mothers and fathers relationships. 44 mother/child and father/child dyads participated in the study, children’s average age was 31.91 months (dp=2.56). to assess paternal involvement, (relative measure), both parents answered separately a questionnaire (monteiro, veríssimo, castro, & oliveira, 2006). the quality of the children’s secure base behavior was assessed with the attachment behavior q-set (waters, 1995). mother/child and father/child dyads were observed, separately, in their homes, by different teams of observers. a traditional division in organization/care and a shared participation in the play activities emerged. no significant correlations were found between socio-demographic variables and fathers participation. fathers that shared caregiving and play activities with mothers have children with higher security scores. in this sample the quantity of father’s participation showed positive consequences for the child socio-emotional development.

Abstract: the aim of this paper was to study the impact of the quality of the father-child relationship on children's academic performance. a total of 58 fathers and their children (in the fifth and sixth grades) participated in this study. the fathers completed a questionnaire, "quality of family interaction - fathers' perspective" and the children completed a questionnaire "father-child interaction". to investigate how the fathers' involvement affected their children's academic performance, the children were evaluated using the school performance test. the results indicate that, the higher the frequency of father-child communication and the greater the fathers' involvement in the children's school, cultural and leisure activities, the higher the children's academic performance. these results indicate the importance of fathers' involvement, to maximize children's academic performance, and the necessity of educating men with respect to the ways in which they can improve their parental performance.
