Sara Blair, Harlem Crossroads
Anne Crémieux
Transatlantica : Revue d'études Américaines , 2008,
Abstract: Harlem Crossroads is a detailed study of how photography has influenced black writers in the 20th century to an extent not previously acknowledged.Sara Blair traces the history of black subject photography to the Harlem riots of 1935 and 1943 that produced a riot of images (5) and eventually, a cultural photographic representation of New York City’s most famous black neighborhood.Having established how Harlem came to be a focus of particular interest to a number of photographers, Sara Bla...

Paidéia (Ribeir?o Preto) , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-863X2006000300003
Abstract: despite the wide use of marital quality concept, it is identified a lack of variables conceptual clarity. this article presents an area literature review with the objective of mapping out the conjugal concept. seven theories about this subject were analysed: social exchange theory, behaviourist theory, attachment theory, crisis theory, simbolic interactionism theory, family systems theory, adaptation of vulnerability to stress model. it is possible to identify three groups of variables in the definition of conjugal quality: spouses personal resources, context in which the couple is inserted, adapting processes. hence, conjugal quality is the result of couple dynamic and interactive process, consequence of a multidimensional character.

Psico , 2005,

Abstract: the origin of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (als) remains unknown, although it seems to be multifactorial. the role of environmental factors has been frequently investigated and suspicion of its influence can be obtained when clusters of a rare disease are described. objective: to describe conjugal cases of als in brazil. method: we describe 2 couples in which both spouses were affected by als. both couples had lived in southeast brazil and were married for at least 20 years. results: there was a great variability in clinical presentation of als in our patients. in both couples the interval between disease onsets was short. no precise environmental factors could be identified at the origin of these conjugal cases. conclusion: the occurrence of als in couples living in the same area may be epidemiologically important, but we cannot exclude that cases may be due to a chance association.

Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2010000200014
Abstract: the hereditary ataxias comprise a very large spectrum of genetically determined neurodegenerative disorders with progressive ataxia as the prominent symptom. in order to measure the severity of cerebellar ataxia in an easier and more practical way, it was proposed a new scale: the scale for the assessment and rating of ataxia (sara). the objective of this study was to translate and validate sara into brazilian portuguese. method: the sara was translated into brazilian portuguese, analyzed, back translated to english, and compared to the original version. it was applied to 30 patients. in addition to sara, we applied the international cooperative ataxia rating scale (icars) in all subjects. results: sara scale was translated into brazilian version with adequate internal consistence, but a significant correlation between icars and sara was not found. conclusion: sara was translated and validated into brazilian portuguese language, showing good reliability and validity.
Relationship Between SARA Fractions and Crude Oil Fouling  [PDF]

Journal of Applied Sciences , 2012,
Abstract: The focus of this research is to study the influence of SARA (saturates, aromatics, resins and asphaltenes) fraction on fouling tendencies for four different types of sweet crude oils obtained from a local Malaysian refinery. In view of the great need to improve the energy efficiency of the refining processes and to reduce maintenance cost, crude oil fouling has been the subject of intense research in recent years. A combination of ASTM D3279 and an in-house method using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) was established for SARA quantification. The components were then related to the Colloidal Instability Index (CII), ratios of resins to asphaltenes (R:A), calculated from the SARA values and related to the Solubility Number, SBN for each of crude oil. These parameters can be used to mitigate crude oil fouling. A good correlation between CII and SBN was observed.

Abstract: Mutation of sarA in Staphylococcus aureus results in a reduced capacity to form a biofilm, but the mechanistic basis for this remains unknown. Previous transcriptional profiling experiments identified a number of genes that are differentially expressed both in a biofilm and in a sarA mutant. This included genes involved in acid tolerance and the production of nucleolytic and proteolytic exoenzymes. Based on this we generated mutations in alsSD, nuc and sspA in the S. aureus clinical isolate UAMS-1 and its isogenic sarA mutant and assessed the impact on biofilm formation. Because expression of alsSD was increased in a biofilm but decreased in a sarA mutant, we also generated a plasmid construct that allowed expression of alsSD in a sarA mutant. Mutation of alsSD limited biofilm formation, but not to the degree observed with the corresponding sarA mutant, and restoration of alsSD expression did not restore the ability to form a biofilm. In contrast, concomitant mutation of sarA and nuc significantly enhanced biofilm formation by comparison to the sarA mutant. Although mutation of sspA had no significant impact on the ability of a sarA mutant to form a biofilm, a combination of protease inhibitors (E-64, 1-10-phenanthroline, and dichloroisocoumarin) that was shown to inhibit the production of multiple extracellular proteases without inhibiting growth was also shown to enhance the ability of a sarA mutant to form a biofilm. This effect was evident only when all three inhibitors were used concurrently. This suggests that the reduced capacity of a sarA mutant to form a biofilm involves extracellular proteases of all three classes (serine, cysteine and metalloproteases). Inclusion of protease inhibitors also enhanced biofilm formation in a sarA/nuc mutant, with the combined effect of mutating nuc and adding protease inhibitors resulting in a level of biofilm formation with the sarA mutant that approached that of the UAMS-1 parent strain. These results demonstrate that the inability of a sarA mutant to repress production of extracellular nuclease and multiple proteases have independent but cumulative effects that make a significant contribution to the biofilm-deficient phenotype of an S. aureus sarA mutant.
Software Architecture Risk Assessment (SARA) Tool

International Journal of Software Engineering , 2008,
Abstract: This paper presents Software Architecture Risk Assessment (SARA) Tool to demonstrate the process of risk assessment at the software architecture level. The prototype tool accepts different types of inputs that define software architecture. It parses these input files and produces quantitative metrics that are used to estimate the required risk factors. The final result of this process is to discern the potentially high risk components in the software system. By manipulating the data acquired from domain expert and measures obtained from Unified Modeling Language (UML) artifacts, SARA Tool can be used at the architecture development phase, at the design phase, or at the implementation phase of the software development process to improve the quality of the software product.
Epistatic Relationships between sarA and agr in Staphylococcus aureus Biofilm Formation  [PDF]

Abstract: The accessory gene regulator (agr) and staphylococcal accessory regulator (sarA) play opposing roles in Staphylococcus aureus biofilm formation. There is mounting evidence to suggest that these opposing roles are therapeutically relevant in that mutation of agr results in increased biofilm formation and decreased antibiotic susceptibility while mutation of sarA has the opposite effect. To the extent that induction of agr or inhibition of sarA could potentially be used to limit biofilm formation, this makes it important to understand the epistatic relationships between these two loci.
