Abstract: this paper deals with characterization of fruits of 13 cultivars belonging to 3 species: cucurbita moschata duchesne, cucurbita maxima duchesne and cucurbita pepo linneu. it was used seeds from controlled pollination. it was considered following characteristics of fruits : epicarp, shape, weight, resistance of the bark, dimensions and thickness of pulp; for seeds were considered: number, dimensions and weight.

Abstract: we summed up the results of the studies of 7 cultivars belonging to specie cucurbita moschata, taking into account their botanical description because they have not been taxonomically characterized yet, though largely known and grown for their economical value. the breeding works of the cultivars of the above mentioned specie have been carried out since 1942 by the section of olericulture of agronomic institute of campinas (i. a. c.) view of the economic importance the|y have. we used seeds from controlled pollination, given away to us by the iac-olericulture section, in order to obtain the plants of the 7 cultivars. the statistical planning followed the steps of distribution at random using the 7 cultivars with 10 replications. the botanical description of the cultivars was based upon the morphological characteristics of the vegetative and floral organs and upon the characteristics of the fruits and seeds as well, taking into consideration: a - the shape, dimensions, presence of lengthwise striae and indumentum of the main stem. b - the dimensions and indumentum of the petiole, the angle formed by the outer ribs at the base of the leaf blade and the angle magnitude, the length of the ribs, the presence or absence of silvery spots on the leaf blade; width an length of leaf blade. c - the shapes of the tendrils. d - for the male and female flowers: the length of the peduncle, the length of the tube and of the lobules of the calyx and its shape, the length of the tubes and of the lobules of the corolla, the diameter of the upper part the corolla tube, diameter between the apexes of the corolla lobules, the length of the filament and the length of the anther, and the shape of the latter for male flowers; the dimensions, positionings, shape and indumentum of the ovary, length and color of stigma, length of the stigma lobules, the variable shape of the nectariferous disk at the style base for female flowers. e - the dimensions, shape, color, parts, consistence and thickn

Abstract: Os métodos indiretos para a determina o do índice de área foliar (IAF), que s o caracterizados em medidas da radia o total que penetram no interior da cobertura vegetal, s o atualmente os mais utilizados, por serem mais práticos. O estudo teve como objetivo medir e estimar o índice de área foliar, ajustar uma equa o através do produto de (comprimento x largura x área foliar) e determinar o coeficiente de extin o luminosa em abóbora Cucurbita moschata var. japonesa. Para desenvolver um modelo, foram medidas vinte folhas determinando-se o comprimento e a largura e para a estimativa do índice de área foliar, foram utilizados cinco repeti es de 1m2, sendo feitas três medidas no interior das folhas e uma medida na parte superior das plantas. Posteriormente, suas folhas foram coletadas para medi es de área foliar em laboratório. Para a obten o do coeficiente de extin o luminosa (k) foram medidos quinze pontos da cultura, em condi es de sol e de sombra. O IAF medido foi 1,145 e o estimado 2,624, mostrando um modelo matemático com crescimento linear originando uma reta e o coeficiente de extin o foi de 0,59. Este trabalho foi importante para determinar os valores de IAF medido, estimado e o coeficiente de extin o para a cultura de abóbora. The study was done to measure and estimate the leaf area index, adjust an equation using the product (length x width x leaf area) and determine the light extinction coefficient in pumpkin Cucurbita moschata var. japanese. To develop a model, the length and width of twenty leaves were measured; to the estimate leaf area index five repetitions of 1m2 were used; three measurements were made within the leaves and one in the superior part of the plants. Later, the leaves were collected for measurements in the laboratory. To obtain the light extinction coefficient (k) fifteen points of culture were measured, in conditions of sun and shade. The LAI estimated were 2.624 and 1.145, indicating a mathematical model with linear growth; the extinction coefficient was 0.59. This work was important to determine the measured values of LAI and the extinction coefficient for the cultivation of pumpkin.

Abstract: A produ o de matéria seca total (MS) aumenta em fun o da idade da planta, mas simultaneamente ocorre decréscimo progressivo do seu valor nutritivo. O presente trabalho teve a finalidade de determinar a combina o de épocas de primeiro corte com a de intervalos de cortes da rebrota que proporcionasse a maior produ o de matéria seca de aveia com as melhores características nutritivas. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, com três repeti es. Em 1994, os tratamentos foram organizados em fatorial 3 x 4 [três indicadores de primeiro corte: 60 dias depois da emergência, início de emborrachamento (IE) e 10% plantas encanadas (PE = alongamento do colmo, com eleva o do meristema apical); quatro indicadores de intervalos de cortes da rebrota: 28 dias, 56 dias, IE, 10% PE]. Foram testados dois cultivares: S o Carlos e UPF 3. Em 1995 e 1996, os tratamentos foram organizados em esquema fatorial 4 x 3 (4 intervalos de corte da rebrota: 28, 35, 42 e 56 dias; três cultivares: S o Carlos, UPF 3 e IAPAR 61). Foram avaliados: produ o de MS, teores de N, Ca, P, Mg, digestibilidade "in vitro" e fibra em detergente neutro. Houve diferen as na produ o de matéria seca e nas características nutritivas entre cultivares, épocas de primeiro corte e intervalos de cortes da rebrota. O primeiro corte deve ser feito com 10% PE, e os cortes da rebrota devem ser efetuados em intervalos de 28 a 35 dias.
Determina??o de paracetamol em produtos farmacêuticos usando um biossensor de pasta de carbono modificado com extrato bruto de abobrinha (Cucurbita pepo)

Abstract: crude extracts of several vegetables such as peach (prunus persica), yam (alocasia macrorhiza), manioc (manihot utilissima), artichoke (cynara scolymus l), sweet potato (ipomoea batatas (l.) lam.), turnip (brassica campestre ssp. rapifera), horseradish (armoracia rusticana) and zucchini (cucurbita pepo) were investigated as the source of peroxidase (pod: ec 1.11.1.7). among those, zucchini (cucurbita pepo) crude extract was found to be the best one. this enzyme in the presence of hydrogen peroxide catalyses the oxidation of paracetamol to n-acetyl-p-benzoquinoneimine which the electrochemical reduction back to paracetamol was obtained at a peak potential of ?0.10v. a cyclic voltammetric study was performed by scanning the potential from + 0.5 to ? 0.5 v. the recovery of paracetamol from two samples ranged from 97.3 to 106% and a rectilinear calibration curve for paracetamol concentration from 1.2x10-4 to 2.5x10-3 mol l-1 (r=0.9965) were obtained. the detection limit was 6.9x10-5 mol l-1 and the relative standard deviation was less than 1.1% for a solution containing 2.5x10-3 mol l-1 paracetamol and 2.0x10-3 mol l-1 hydrogen peroxide (n=12). the results obtained for paracetamol in pharmaceutical products using the proposed biosensor and pharmacopoeial procedures are in agreement at the 95% confidence level.

PRECIS O E CONTROLE DE QUALIDADE EM EXPERIMENTOS DE AVALIA O DE CULTIVARES PRECISION AND QUALITY CONTROL IN VARIETY TRIALS

Abstract: O presente estudo teve como objetivo propor uma nova abordagem para a avalia o da qualidade dos ensaios de avalia o do valor de cultivo e uso (VCU) de cultivares, a qual considera, simultaneamente, três atributos: magnitude da varia o residual, número de repeti es e controle genético dos caracteres. Enfatizou também a necessidade do uso de métodos de estima o/predi o de valores genotípicos que promovam shrinkage sobre a média fenotípica do cultivar; ou seja, que considerem um coeficiente de determina o genética, bem como a possível heterogeneidade de variancias residuais entre as cultivares. Concluiu-se que, para atingir uma meta de acurácia de 90%, os valores do teste F de Snedecor associados aos efeitos de cultivares, na análise da variancia, devem ser superiores a 5,0. O uso da estatística F é uma alternativa para também levar em considera o o nível de variabilidade genética dos caracteres. Assim, n o é suficiente fixar-se um número mínimo de repeti es e um valor máximo para o coeficiente de varia o experimental (CVe). Para caracteres de produ o, em geral com baixo coeficiente de determina o genética, os números de repeti es usualmente empregados (entre dois e quatro) n o permitem atingir essa meta de acurácia seletiva, mesmo quando se perseguem valores de CVe inferiores a 10% e a experimenta o é realizada em vários locais e anos. Para isso, recomendam-se ao menos seis repeti es na avalia o desses caracteres. Demonstra-se, ainda, que os estimadores/preditores que promovem shrinkage sobre a média fenotípica garantem inferências mais realistas e precisas acerca das médias genotípicas das cultivares, devendo ser encorajados. This study had as objective to propose a new approach for quality evaluation of variety trials for determination of cropping and use values (VCU), which considers three attributes simultaneously: magnitude of the residual variation, replication number, and genetic control of the trait under selection. It was also emphasized the need for using shrinkage estimators/predictors of genotypic values instead of unshrunk phenotypic means of varieties, i.e., the procedures should consider the genetic coefficient of determination of the traits, as well as the eventual heterogeneity of residual variance within varieties. Abstract: Neste trabalho caracterizou-se a qualidade dos frutos em diferentes pontos de colheita para armazenamento das cultivares de maracujá: BRS Gigante Amarelo, BRS Ouro Vermelho e BRS Sol do Cerrado. Foram avaliados as características físicas dos frutos (aparência, perda de massa, colora o da casca) e os parametros químicos do suco (conteúdo de acidez, pH, ácido ascórbico, sólidos solúveis totais, a úcares solúveis totais e a úcares redutores). Utilizou-se uma Amostragem Simples ao Acaso (ASA), com 0,05 de significancia e as médias foram comparadas pelo Teste "t" por Intervalo de Confian a. Os frutos colhidos nos estádios iniciais de amadurecimento apresentaram maior perda de massa e altera o da qualidade do suco. Conclui-se que os frutos das diferentes cultivares colhidos na safra de ver o (novembro/dezembro) devem ter pelo menos 55% de casca com colora o amarela para proporcionar menor perda de massa, manter a qualidade do suco e aumentar a sua vida útil. In this study the fruit quality was characterized at different harvest points for storage of varieties of passion fruits: BRS Gigante Amarelo, BRS Ouro Vermelho and BRS Sol do Cerrado. The physical characteristics of fruits (appearance, mass loss and peel color) and chemical parameters of juice (content of acidity, pH, ascorbic acid, total soluble solids, total soluble sugars and reducing sugars) were characterized. The method of Simple Random Sampling (SRS) was applied, with 0.05 level of significance, and means were compared using the "t" Test for Confidence Intervals. Fruits harvested in the early ripening stages showed a higher mass loss as well as the worst juice quality. It was concluded that fruits of different cultivars harvested in summer seasons must present at least 55% of yellow peel color to render the lower mass loss, the best quality of juice and to extend the storage time.
