Abstract: caroá melon is a curcubitaceae found in its native form in the rec?ncavo region of bahia, where it is used by popular medicine for many diseases. however, this species is little explored in research. the objective of the present work was to study different substrates in order to evaluate the germination index and seed vigor in caroá melon (sicana odorifera) during seedling production. the following substrates were used: washed sand, sand washed with worm humus (2:1) and commercial substrate, plantmax?.the following evaluations were carried out: germination test, speed of germination index (sgi), stem diameter, plant height, root length and root, stem and leaf dry matter. the commercial substrate plantmax? presented the best performance compared to the others; however, the most adequate and least costly in seedling production using caroá melon (sicana odorífera) seeds, was the mixture of washed sand and worm humus in the 2:1 ratio.

Abstract: Estudo objetivou verificar a compreens o dos alunos acerca do uso de Equipamento de prote o individual (EPI) na perspectiva do controle de infec o e identificar a contribui o dos cursos de gradua o em enfermagem para a constru o do conhecimento dos graduandos sobre esta temática. Realizado com 182 (58,3%) graduandos concluintes dos cursos de enfermagem em Institui es de Ensino Superior do Estado de Goiás no ano de 2005. Os dados foram obtidos por meio de um questionário após aprova o no Comitê de ética em Pesquisa e analisados por meio de estatística descritiva. Os resultados mostram múltiplas condutas dos alunos no uso e manuseio de jaleco, luvas, máscara, óculos e gorro. Embora relatem fazer uso de EPI, n o conhecem suas finalidades de uso, ainda que tenham sido abordadas em disciplina curricular. O conhecimento é inconsistente e sinaliza falha no processo de ensino. Verificamos uma vulnerabilidade dos acadêmicos em rela o à preven o de infec es adquiridas ocupacionalmente.

Abstract: Nos finais da Idade Média, nomeadamente em Portugal, come ou a surgir o gosto pela observa o e registo da natureza. Os descobrimentos marítimos portugueses nos séculos XV e XVI permitiram, desde o início, verificar que o mundo natural era diferente do que se encontrava nos textos clássicos da cultura greco-romana, onde o conhecimento da ásia era muito incipiente e distorcido. A descoberta do caminho marítimo para a índia, em 1498, o posterior estabelecimento de um governo em Goa, a funda o de várias feitorias situadas em pontos estratégicos do índico e a realiza o de algumas alian as locais, permitiram a Portugal controlar o acesso às especiarias e drogas farmacêuticas, muito pretendidas nos mercados europeus. A este Estado da índia come aram a afluir religiosos, militares, funcionários régios, físicos, boticários e muitos outros. Neste contexto, Garcia de Orta, com forma o académica baseada nos textos clássicos, foi para a índia como médico do nomeado capit o-mor do mar da índia, ficando naquele local o resto da sua vida. O contacto directo com as drogas e especiarias medicinais na ásia permitiu-lhe verificar e corrigir, de forma pioneira, os conceitos existentes sobre aquelas mercadorias, algumas das quais usadas desde há muito pela medicina ocidental, e apresentar novos produtos. Deixou os seus conhecimentos registados na obra Coloquios dos simples, e drogas e cousas medicinais da índia, e… Esta obra constitui o primeiro contributo científico europeu para o conhecimento das plantas medicinais orientais. Depois de ter sido dado a conhecer à Europa, em latim, aquela obra teve uma enorme repercuss o, que se regista até hoje, sendo importante para Medicina, Farmacognosia e Botanica. By the end of the Middle Age, namely in Portugal, the interest about the observation and record of nature arose. The Portuguese expansion odyssey in the 15th and 16th centuries allowed, from the early beginning, to understand that the natural world was different from that found in old c1assical literature from the Greek-roman culture, where the knowledge about Asia was very incipient and distorted. The discovery of the maritime pathway for India, in 1498, the subsequent establishment of a government in Goa, the creation of several trading posts in strategic points of the Indian ocean and the establishment of some local alliances allowed Portugal to control the access to the spices and pharmaceutical drugs, very solicited in the European markets. Abstract: Phytohemical investigation on the heartwood of Dalbergia odorifera resulted in the isolation of nine flavonoids. Their structures were elucidated as sativanone (1), (3R)-vestitone (2), (3R)-2',3',7-trihydroxy-4'-methoxyisoflavanone (3), (3R)-4'-methoxy-2',3,7-trihydroxyisoflavanone (4), carthamidin (5), liquiritigenin (6), isoliquiritigenin (7), (3R)-vestitol (8), and sulfuretin (9) based on their spectral data. All compounds were evaluated for their inhibitory activity against Ralstonia solanacearum. This is the first report about anti-R. solanacearum activity of the compounds from D. odorifera.

Abstract: Seven compounds were isolated from Dalbergia odorifera T. Chen and their antioxidant activities were studied with Oil Stability Index (OSI) method, reducing power and radical scavenging methods. The compounds were identified by spectroscopic methods as (1) pinocembrin (2) biochanin A (3) sativanone (4) biochanin B (5) naringenin (6) 3'-hydroxymelanettin and (7) eriodictoyl. Results showed that compounds 6 and 7 exhibited stronger antioxidant activity than commonly used synthetic antioxidant BHT in the presented study.

Naudé adumbrates the organization andcontents of the ideal library so that judicious readers may integrate the oldand new learning. In calling for a single pansophist book, Comenius heraldsBacon’s inductive method and yet would restore metaphysics to theencyclopedia. And after his own efforts in Baconian encyclopedism in thePseudodoxia Epidemica, Thomas Browne writes a catalogue of books andartifacts that is at once an elegy to the republic of letters and a ludic plea toinclude admiratio in “the round of knowledge.” This diverse receptionhistory emblemizes the rich, often contradictory potential of Bacon’sencyclopedic vision.

Abstract: Várias espécies da família Lauraceae encontram-se em risco de extin o, devido ao alto valor comercial de suas madeiras e a consequente explora o das reservas naturais. Dentre elas, Ocotea porosa (imbuia), O. odorifera (canela-sassafras) e O. catharinensis (canela-preta) s o de grande importancia no Sul do Brasil, de onde s o originárias. Estas espécies apresentam sementes recalcitrantes, o que dificulta sua regenera o natural. Alem disso, a propaga o por meio de estaquia e enxertia apresenta limita es. Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar a germina o e multiplica o in vitro das canelas preta e sassafrás na presen a de BAP e carv o ativado e a germina o e multiplica o in vitro de imbuia sob diferentes concentra es de sacarose no meio de cultura. Para as canelas preta e sassafrás foram avaliadas duas concentra es de NaClO na desinfesta o de embri es (0,1 % e 0,5 %). Na fase de multiplica o, foi avaliado o efeito de BAP e carv o ativado. Para a imbuia, foi avaliada a influência da concentra o de sacarose (30, 60, 90 ou 120 g.L-1) na introdu o e multiplica o in vitro. A porcentagem de germina o foi superior a 85 % para as três espécies. Para a canela sassafrás, as melhores taxas de multiplica o foram obtidas na presen a de 5 μmol.L-1 de BAP. Para a imbuia, a concentra o de 60 g.L-1 de sacarose no meio proporcionou as maiores taxas de multiplica o. Apesar de o estabelecimento da canela preta ter sido satisfatório, após algumas semanas no meio de multiplica o os explantes n o apresentavam aparência normal e oxidaram. Among them, Ocotea porosa, O. odorifera and O. catharinensis, native from South Brazil, have recalcitrant seeds, what makes even more dificult their natural regeneration. This work aimed to evaluate in vitro seed germination and multiplication of O. odorifera and O. catharinensis in culture medium supplemented with activated charcoal and/or BAP and in vitro seed germination and multiplication of O. porosa in culture medium supplemented with several concentrations of sucrose. The effect of BAP and activated charcoal were tested in the multiplication of O. catharinensis and O. odorifera and the effect of sucrose concentration (30, 60, 90 ou 120 g.L-1) was tested in the multiplication of O. porosa. Abstract: The contemporary Afrikaans poet Charl-Pierre Naudé is one of the most promising voices in South African poetry today. Following two award-winning Afrikaans collections, Naudé s debut collection in English, Against the Light (2007), demonstrates learned intertexual references to classical literature, particularly the Roman poets Horace and Catullus. These Latin poets become competing models for Naudé’s own poetics, either passionate and personal, or political and pastoral. In post-apartheid South Africa, after a period of dramatic social change, ultimately Catullus offers himself as the more compelling poetic model for this South African writer.

Serratia odorifera a Midgut Inhabitant of Aedes aegypti Mosquito Enhances Its Susceptibility to Dengue-2 Virus  [PDF]

Abstract: Mosquito midgut plays a crucial role in its vector susceptibility and pathogen interaction. Identification of the sustainable microflora of the midgut environment can therefore help in evaluating its contribution in mosquito-pathogen interaction and in turn vector competence. To understand the bacterial diversity in the midgut of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, we conducted a screening study of the gut microbes of these mosquitoes which were either collected from fields or reared in the laboratory “culture-dependent” approach. This work demonstrated that the microbial flora of larvae and adult Ae. aegypti midgut is complex and is dominated by Gram negative proteobacteria. Serratia odorifera was found to be stably associated in the midguts of field collected and laboratory reared larvae and adult females. The potential influence of this sustainable gut microbe on DENV-2 susceptibility of this vector was evaluated by co-feeding S. odorifera with DENV-2 to adult Ae. aegypti females (free of gut flora). The observations revealed that the viral susceptibility of these Aedes females enhanced significantly as compared to solely dengue-2 fed and another gut inhabitant, Microbacterium oxydans co-fed females. Based on the results of this study we proposed that the enhancement in the DENV-2 susceptibility of Ae. aegypti females was due to blocking of prohibitin molecule present on the midgut surface of these females by the polypeptide of gut inhabitant S. odorifera.
