Abstract: the text tries to analyse s?o paulo's pasteur institute: a philanthropic scientific institution, founded in 1903 by psysicians from s?o paulo, following the pallerns of paris' pasteur institute. the institution's scientific and administrative hystory is focused within the context of the development of offjcial bacteriológicai institutes founded in s?o paulo's capital sincc the last decade of lhe 19a ccnlury. because of lhe simifarity belween s?o paulo's and paris' insliíutes, we tried to make a counterpoint bctwcen lheórganizationalmodels of both instilutions, trying to infer from it what are lhe possibilities and limitations arising from lhe attempl lo rccreate an inslitutional paltern, wilhin a social formation which is diffe-rent from the one that originated it.

Abstract: Este artigo apresenta técnica para dimensionar e classificar popula es caninas, segundo graus de dependência e restri o. Foi desenvolvida pelo Instituto Pasteur de S o Paulo, com a seguinte metodologia: (1) realiza o de um inquérito domiciliar para identifica o dos c es com proprietário e do grau de restri o. Aos proprietários de c es restritos, totalmente ou parcialmente, e aos moradores que n o se definiram como proprietários únicos foram entregues coleiras de três cores distintas, solicitando-lhes coloca o nos c es sob seus cuidados; (2) contagem de c es que circulavam na rua e classifica o conforme cor da coleira, cuja ausência identificou os c es sem proprietário. Os pesquisadores foram posicionados em locais pré-determinados, distantes em média cinqüenta metros. O tempo de cada contagem foi de trinta segundos, repetindo-se a cada 15 minutos, por uma hora, com início e término marcados por apito. A técnica, aplicada em dois setores censitários do Município de Serra Azul, Estado de S o Paulo, Brasil, foi realizada por adolescentes de 13 a 17 anos, submetidos a um dia de treinamento. O procedimento foi simples e possibilitou acesso à informa o de difícil obten o, como o percentual de c es sem proprietário ou sem proprietário definido, que, no caso estudado, foi de 5%.
La llegada de la peste al Estado de Sao Paulo en 1899

Abstract: en octubre de 1899, la peste bubónica llegó a brasil, por el puerto de santos. ciudad paulista de intenso flujo portuario fue la puerta de entrada de la epidemia de peste que asoló varias ciudades brasile?as a comienzos del siglo xx. esta epidemia fue propulsora de una acción conjunta de varios estados para combatirla y, más que eso, ante las dificultades de importación de suero preparado en europa, llevó a la creación, en 1899, del instituto butantan en sao paulo, y, en 1900, del instituto soroterápico municipal, en río de janeiro. ambas instituciones fomentaron la elaboración de sueros y vacunas contra la peste estableciendo un patrón de estos productos según las condiciones del país. las medidas de salud pública desarrolladas hasta entonces se habían aplicado de forma aislada y puntual en brasil. el doctor oswaldo cruz, tras tres a?os de especialización en el instituto pasteur de paris trabajó en la identificación de la peste en santos, juntamente con los científicos adolfo lutz y vital brazil. este artículo pretende analizar la llegada de la epidemia de peste bubónica al estado de sao paulo y las acciones llevadas a cabo en el campo de la salud pública para combate de la enfermedad y la asistencia a los enfermos, especialmente en los primeros a?os del siglo xx. las fuentes principales para este análisis son los periódicos paulistas, concretamente o estado de s?o paulo, los informes del ministerio de justicia y los mensajes elaborados por el presidente del estado de sao paulo.

Abstract: this brief inventory of the biological institute of s?o paulo's documental collection describes how the archive came to be and explains its relevance to history of sciences research in brazil. a short history of the institution provides insight into its activities in the field of agronomic research in s?o paulo and the role that sciences played in modernizing agriculture in that state. the collection contains documents by scientists whose names occupy a special place in the history of brazil, such as arthur neiva, henrique da rocha lima, and josé reis.

Abstract: the objective of this article is to describe the admissions for smallpox at the institute of infectious diseases emilio ribas, during the period from 1898 to 1970, showing the origin of the patients' residence in the metropolitan region of s?o paulo. it is a descriptive study which used secondary data collected from the record books for admissions at the institute during the period of 1898 to 1970. the hospital records were counted and grouped into periods of 10 years. the total amount of admissions were 11,393. from the total of 533 deaths, 251 of the patients were female, 280 male and two unknown. these patients resided in 139 different locations. the city of s?o paulo contributed with 7915 or 69.5% of the total, followed by santo andré, mogi das cruzes, guarulhos, s?o caetano do sul, osasco and suzano. it was seen 237 patients in transit. for 994 admissions the municipality of origin was ignored, despite indications in the records.

Abstract: this paper describes a technique developed by the pasteur institute in s?o paulo, brazil, for counting and classifying a canine population according to levels of dependency and confinement. first, a household survey was performed to identify dogs with owners and their degree of restriction. different-colored collars were given to totally and partially restricted dogs. dogs cared for by individuals who did not consider themselves the owners received collars of a third color. after the survey, surveyors counted and recorded dogs on the streets according to the color of their collars. absence of collars identified dogs without owners. surveyors were positioned at predetermined sites, an average of 50 meters apart. counting time lasted 30 seconds and was repeated every 10 to 15 minutes for one hour, with starting and finishing times signaled by blasts on a whistle. the technique was used in the city of serra azul, s?o paulo, brazil, by 13- to 17-year-olds after a one-day training program. a total of 498 dogs were recorded in two census tracts, 5% of which were classified as without owners and unrestricted.
