Melo, Alfredo César;
Estudos Avan?ados , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40142009000300031
Abstract: in this article, i analyze the rhetoric deployed in casa grande & senzala, without resorting to the dualistic framework in which the work has been studied. i will demonstrate how parts of this essay, very different in their constitutive principles (e.g., nostalgic excerpts, anthropological analysis), are articulated in order to propose a memory pact with the reader. in this pact, the experiences of rural brazil are remembered lyrically, whereas rural brazilian racial stereotypes are refuted scientifically. on the one hand, there is an attempt to rescue the affective dimension of patriarchal private life, while on the other hand, the book tries to discard many racial prejudices produced by that same world. freyre's work sets forth a memory decantation, a subtle dialectics between remembering and forgetting. my argument thereby suggests that memory in casa-grande & senzala must be taken into account as something much more complex than mere nostalgic lamentation. i finally argue that the importance of understanding of this memory pact is twofold: it helps both to identify the constitutive features of racial democracy discourse and to deconstruct that same discourse.

Sorá, Gustavo;
Revista Brasileira de Ciências Sociais , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-69091998000100008
Abstract: the article analyses intellectual struggles and changes in the independence process of brazilian social sciences and of the production and circulation of written messages about brazil, by focusing on the publishing and reception of the masters and the slaves by gilberto freyre. between the first and the 14th edition of the book and the consecration of authors such as florestan fernandes, a symbolic battle took place to universalize the genuine forms (narrative styles, institutional projects, editorial formulas, invention and representation of readers' communities) to think about brazil. the article shows how the judgement over freyre and his first book to be regionalist, is originated in the positions and conceptions that freyre himself adopted on his trajectory as well as in the dominant positions on the intellectual field during the forties in s?o paulo, which aimed to consolidate the "national and scientific sociology". altogether with the speeches' interpretation, the principles of its dispersion, the edition and the establishment of academic knowledge, the article seeks the understanding of how the book, the work and the author have become what they are at the present moment, enlightened by the changes in the selection means of brazilian interpreters' pantheon.

Intrabasin Floral Differences in the Sonoran Desert; a case study from the Casa Grande Valley  [PDF]
Gabriela Garcia,Sarah Gabriele,Benjamin Cowgill,Xavier Rodriguez,Robert J Gay
PeerJ , 2015, DOI: 10.7287/peerj.preprints.207v3
Abstract: Background: The purpose of this study was to determine what floral differences exist in North Mountain Park and Casa Grande Mountain Park which are both located on opposite sides of the Casa Grande Valley, Pinal County, Arizona and to attempt to explain any measured differences. Previous authors have proposed several explanations for floral variation within the Sonoran Desert including elevation, soil pH, and mineral content. This study explicitly tests several of these proposed mechanisms for determining community composition. Methods: The floral composition was measured in both North Mountain Park and Casa Grande Mountain Park through a series of transects which were sampled by multiple times in 2012 and 2013. Elevation data soil pH were also sampled. Results: The data recovered from North Mountain Park differed from the expected values in Casa Grande Mountain Park by 22%. This indicates a significant difference in the flora between these two localities that was not predicted by earlier studies. Elevation and soil pH differences between sampled localities were not significant. This suggests that mineral composition of the soil may play an important role within this basin in determining community composition. Discussion: Many factors that have been proposed in prior studies do not appear to play a significant role within the Casa Grande Valley in determining community composition. This indicates that the composition of a community is influenced by different factors in different locations within the Sonoran Desert. This makes determining overall controlling factors across an ecosystem difficult.

Afranio Garcia Jr
Revista del Museo de Antropologia , 2009,
Abstract: This article investigates the contributions of intellectuals to the valorization of the Brazilian community during the years 1930-1940; substituting the objectivation of the heavy historical legacy inherited from the slavery system of large colonial plantations to the study of a miscigenated population. First, this article reviews the book Os Sert es by Euclides da Cunha, where the signification of the war against the Canudos village is deciphered in terms of elimination of an emerging race resulting from the cross-breeding of the Whites and the Indians. Then the study of three of the main works of the years 30-40, Casa Grande e Senzala (Masters and Slaves) by Gilberto Freyre, Raízes do Brasil (Brazil’ Roots) by Sérgio Buarque de Hollanda and Forma o do Brasil Contemporaneo (The making of contemporary Brazil) by Caio Prado Jr. intends to explain how the social matrix of miscegenation in Brazil and the strong legacy of the slavery system having imprinted the ways of functioning of the political space, the economic field and the rebuilding of social hierarchies have been objectified. The author thus explicits the challenges the nation has to face in order to preserve itself and to build the future.
