Campe?es de produtividade: dores e febres nos canaviais paulistas

Abstract: since 1970, the sugar cane agro-industry has been going through modernization and production diversification processes that have guaranteed its expansion beyond traditionally productive regions. in recent years, these processes have received more attention due to sugar cane and alcohol?s favorable conditions in the international market and to the international investments in the sector. these changes affect the labor market dynamics, selection processes, kinds of labor agreements, organization of agricultural labor, as well as workers? profile. in this context, agricultural entrepreneurs still give priority to hiring migrant workers during the sugar cane harvest. the main reason for this preference is the high productivity of these workers in cutting sugar cane. since childhood, they have been used to the hard work on the land to ensure means of survival to their families. the work at the sugar cane plantations does not scare them, even when the demands put them at the limit of their physical capacities, deteriorating their body and bringing serious consequences to their health. this article shows the deterioration of work conditions in sugar cane plantations and exposes palliative measures put in practice by sugar factory proprietors in order to improve work conditions and not to alter productivity levels, remuneration and production control.
La erótica de Mayra Santos-Febres  [cached]
Daniel Torres
Centro Journal , 2003,
Abstract: This paper is an analysis, within the limits of erotics, of the novel Sirena Selena vestida de pena, by Puerto Rican author Mayra Santos-Febres. Ideas of transvestites and women s correct bodies are deconstructed through a language of solidarity. Selena constructs a femenine body that reaches its limit when s/he seduces the apparently macho Hugo Graubel, who insists on being penetrated by the transvestite. The main character s crisis reveals itself when s/he claims her personal erotic identity as transgender and not as a man who crossdresses. The transvestite s masculinity clashes with her vestido de pena (sorrow dress), to the point that s/he flees the narrative, the mystery of her disappearance left unresolved. In this novel, Santos-Febres advocates erotics unburdened by taboos, erotics where each person accepts breaking through the barriers imposed by society

Archivo Espa?ol de Arte , 2006,
Abstract: The contract dated 1511 signed by Fernando Llanos and Fernando Yá ez de la Almedina, Castillian painters known as “the Hernandos,” for the termination of an altarpiece in the chapel of the “Virgen de les Febres” is presented here. This chapel was founded in 1497 in the collegiate church of Jàtiva (Valencia) by Francisco de Borja, Bishop of Teano and Cardinal of Cosenza. Based on this document, a series of hypotheses are put forth concerning the trajectory and works of “the Hernandos” following their execution of the doors of the main altarpiece of the Cathedral of Valencia.

Nine nights: the labyrinth of voices The novel Nine Nights by Bernardo Carvalho, was published in 2002 and has been wide acclaimed In this book, Carvalho entangled reality (history) and fiction, and works with a set of multiple voices in the construction of discourse. The novel is open for literary criticism in two different senses which, at the same time, complement each other: the study of the relationship between fiction and history, and polyphony, a concept defined and theorized by Mikhail Bakhtin. Because we believe in the complementarity of these two lines of critical analysis, this paper intends to do a study under these two perspectives of analysis.
Sirena Selena vestida de pena de Mayra Santos-Febres: transgresiones de espacio o espacio de ansgresiones?  [cached]

Centro Journal , 2003,
Abstract: This paper s goal is to reflect, however briefly, on the image of the transvestite in the novel Sirena Selena vestida de pena, by Puerto Rican author Mayra Santos-Febres. The paper analyzes how crossdressing functions as a metaphor to encompass the ambiguities of the Associated Free State, which has been described by several critics as a postcolonial colony, where identity and everything light is up for sale. By placing the narrative in the Dominican Republic, Santos extends the Puerto Rican colonial experience into a diasporic experience within the Caribbean, in the context of desire and its First- World crossdressing. In this way the transvestite also expresses the contradictory reality that, at the end of the 20th century, affects the Caribbean, whose countries are the subject of a complex network of interests
