Abstract: OBJETIVOS: avaliar os fatores determinantes dos níveis de hemoglobina de crian as aos 12 meses de vida, em quatro municípios da Zona da Mata Meridional de Pernambuco. MéTODOS: estudo transversal, realizado em uma sub-amostra de 245 lactentes, pertencentes a uma coorte de 652 crian as. A coleta de dados foi realizada no período de janeiro a agosto de 1999. RESULTADOS: a prevalência de anemia foi de 73,2%, sendo a média de hemoglobina de 9,8 g/dL (DP = 1,6 g/dL). A análise de variancia apresentou uma associa o estatisticamente significante entre níveis de hemoglobina e escolaridade materna, posse de televis o no domicílio, peso ao nascer, dura o do aleitamento materno exclusivo, ocorrência de diarréia e estado nutricional segundo os índices peso/idade e comprimento/idade. A análise de regress o linear múltipla mostrou que as condi es socioecon micas, o peso ao nascer, a dura o do aleitamento materno exclusivo e a ocorrência de diarréia tiveram um impacto significante na varia o dos níveis de hemoglobina. CONCLUS ES: os resultados confirmam ser a anemia um relevante problema de saúde pública, especialmente em lactentes, tendo múltiplos fatores que contribuem para o seu surgimento, sendo necessário, portanto, identificar os mais importantes para serem levados em considera o nos programas de saúde da crian a.

Abstract: Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a associa o entre a concentra o de hemoglobina e prevalência de anemia com variáveis sócio-econ micas e de consumo alimentar. O estudo seccional, realizado em Pernambuco, Brasil, no ano 1997, utilizou a amostragem em três estágios. A amostra compreendeu 746 crian as de 6-59 meses, nas quais foram realizados dosagem de hemoglobina e inquérito dietético recordatório de 24 horas. A prevalência de anemia foi de 40,6%, sendo maior no Interior Rural e diminuindo com o aumento da idade, da renda e da escolaridade materna. A maioria das crian as (88,9%) consumia leite de vaca. A anemia apresentou tendência de aumento com a eleva o da propor o de calorias do leite e de redu o com o aumento da densidade de ferro (total, heme e n o-heme). A idade da crian a, a área geográfica, a renda familiar per capita, a escolaridade materna, a densidade de ferro e a propor o de calorias do leite de vaca na dieta s o fatores determinantes da anemia no grupo estudado.

Abstract: OBJETIVO: O estudo foi realizado com o objetivo de verificar a prevalência de anemia e seus possíveis determinantes em crian as de 0 a 36 meses de idade que freqüentam escolas municipais infantis. MéTODOS: Realizou-se um estudo transversal pelo qual foram estudadas 557 crian as de 0 a 36 meses de idade de todas as escolas municipais infantis de Porto Alegre, RS. Foi feita antropometria e dosagem de hemoglobina pelo fot metro portátil HemoCue, considerando-se anemia níveis inferiores a 11 g/dl. As informa es sobre as crian as foram obtidas por questionário aplicado às m es. A associa o das variáveis estudadas com a anemia foi analisada pela técnica de regress o log-binomial aplicada ao modelo hierárquico. RESULTADOS: Encontrou-se uma prevalência de anemia de 47,8% entre toda a popula o estudada, cujos determinantes foram: famílias com renda per capita igual ou inferior a um salário-mínimo (raz o de prevalência [RP] = 1,6), faixa etária de 12 a 23 meses (RP=1,4) e presen a de dois ou mais irm os com menos de cinco anos (RP=1,4). CONCLUS ES: A prevalência de anemia na popula o estudada é bastante elevada, especialmente nas crian as de nível socioecon mico mais baixo, na faixa etária de 12 a 23 meses, e nas crian as com dois ou mais irm os com menos de cinco anos, indicando a necessidade urgente de medidas efetivas visando o seu combate e a sua preven o.

Abstract: OBJETIVO: Investigar os fatores de risco para anemia por deficiência de ferro em crian as e adolescentes (7 a 17 anos) infectados por helmintos. MéTODOS: Foi realizado um estudo transversal com 1709 crian as e adolescentes residentes na cidade de Jequié, Estado da Bahia, Brasil, que apresentavam infec o leve ou moderada por Schistosoma mansoni, Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura e ancilostomídeos. Foram obtidos dados sobre níveis de hemoglobina (hemoglobin metro portátil), consumo alimentar (inquérito recordatório de 24 horas), infec o parasitária (método Kato-Katz), condi es ambientais e domiciliares, renda e escolaridade dos responsáveis. Os fatores de risco para anemia na popula o foram estudados com base em um modelo hierárquico de causalidade. RESULTADOS: A prevalência de infec o por T. trichiura, A. lumbricoides, S. mansoni e ancilostomídeos foi de 74,8, 63,0, 55,5 e 15,7%, respectivamente. Constatou-se que 32,2% das crian as e adolescentes eram anêmicos. Depois do ajuste para variáveis de confus o, os resultados da análise multivariada mostraram que a renda familiar per capita abaixo de um quarto do salário mínimo (27 dólares), o sexo masculino, a faixa etária de 7 a 9 anos e a ingest o inadequada de ferro biodisponível foram significativamente associados à anemia. CONCLUS ES: As a es para controle da anemia no grupo de maior risco, conforme identificado no presente estudo, devem visar o aumento do consumo de alimentos ricos em ferro e da biodisponibilidade do ferro ingerido, bem como a melhoria das condi es sócio-ambientais.

Abstract: objective: to verify the prevalence of anemia among children aged 0 to 36 months, who attend public day care centers in porto alegre, brazil, and assess its possible risk factors. methods: a cross-sectional study was carried out in 557 children aged 0 to 36 months of all public day care centers in porto alegre. anthropometric measurements and hemoglobin levels were performed. the portable hemocue photometer was employed to measure hemoglobin levels, and anemia was considered when the hemoglobin level was below 11 g/dl. information regarding each child was obtained by means of a questionnaire applied to the mother. the association of the variables studied to anemia was analyzed using the log-binomial regression technique applied to the hierarchical model. results: a 47.8% prevalence of anemia was found in this population. the risk factors for anemia in the studied group were: families with per capita income equal or less than one monthly minimal wage (prevalence ratio ? rp =1.6), age between 12 and 23 months (rp=1.4), and having 2 or more siblings younger than 5 years old (rp=1.4). conclusions: there is a high prevalence of anemia among children aged 0 to 36 months in public day care centers, especially among children with the lowest socioeconomic level, in the 12 to 23 months age group, and who have 2 or more siblings under 5 years of age, indicating that there is an urgent need for effective measures to fight and prevent this condition.

Abstract: objective: to estimate the prevalence of anemia and to identify its associated factors in children aged 6-59 months. methods: this was a cross-sectional study on data from the third health and nutrition survey of the state of pernambuco, northeastern brazil, with a representative sample of 1,403 children from urban and rural areas. anemia was diagnosed by means of hemoglobin assays. multivariate analysis was performed though a hierarchical model, using robust-variance poisson regression to estimate the prevalence ratio as a function of the following variables: biological factors, morbidity, child nutritional state, socioeconomic factors, housing, sanitation and maternal factors. results: the weighted prevalence of anemia was 32.8% overall: 31.5% in urban areas and 36.6% in rural areas. in urban areas, anemia was significantly associated with maternal education, consumer goods, number of children less than five years old in the home, drinking water treatment, maternal age, maternal anemia and the child's age. in rural areas, only maternal age and the child's age were significantly associated with anemia. conclusions: the prevalence of anemia in children in pernambuco was similar in urban and rural areas. the factors associated with anemia that are presented here should be taken into consideration in planning effective measures for its control.

Abstract: objective: to estimate the magnitude of the anemia, to analyze the time trends and investigate the factors associated with this disturbance in children in the state of paraíba, brazil. methods: a cross-sectional survey, of population-based, with 1108 children, aged 6 to 59 months, both sexes in the state of paraíba. hemoglobin (hb) in venous blood was analyzed with an automatic counter. the social-economic and demographic characteristics of children were obtained by questionnaire. proportions were compared by pearson's chi-squared test, and the association between hemoglobin concentrations and potential risk factors was tested by regression model poisson. the time trend of anemia was assessed by the increase/decreased in the prevalence of anemia, using as comparison the prevalence observed in the years 1982, 1992 and 2007. results: the prevalence of anemia (hb < 11.0 g/dl) in the state of paraíba was 36.5% (ci95% 33.7 to 39.3). it was observed that 1.3% (ci95% 0.7 to 1.8) were in severe form (hb <7.0 g/dl), 11% (ci95% 9.4 to 13.5) in a moderate form and 87.6% (ci95% 79.1 to 91.2) in the mild form. there was an increase 88.5% in cases of anemia between the years 1982-1992 and stabilization in the prevalence between the years 1992-2007. the analysis adjusted poisson model showed a greater susceptibility to anemia in children 6 to 24 months of age, those breastfed for six months or more, who co-inhabited with more than 04 people in the same household and lived in houses with less than 05 rooms. conclusions: the results revealed that anemia remains an important public health problem in the state of paraíba and despite having been shown an stabilization in the prevalence of anemia between 1992-2007, differently the prevalence observed between 1982-1992, this deficiency presents in high level, witch requires more effective measures of prevention and control.

Abstract: this study aimed to assess factors associated with anemia in schoolchildren. all subjects (n = 1,013; age 7-14 yrs.) were students enrolled in the public school system in salvador, bahia state, brazil. blood tests were done to determine hemoglobin levels, anthropometric data were collected, and a 24-hour food recall was performed. the study also gathered socioeconomic, environmental, and household data, as well as information on care by the mother. anemia was detected in 24.5% of subjects, with mean hemoglobin of 12.68g/dl (range 7.7g-16.8g/dl). anemia was significantly associated with inadequate intake of bioavailable iron (or50-99.9% adequacy = 1.57; 95%ci: 1.07-2.29; p = 0.020 and or< 50% adequacy = 1.68; 95%ci: 1.10-2.56; p = 0.016) and family income below 1 minimum wage (or = 1, 42; 95%ci: 1.03-1.96; p = 0.035). anemia prevalence in children and adolescents was high, especially among the poorest subjects and those with low intake of bioavailable iron.

Abstract: objective: to estimate the prevalence of anemia and to determine associated risk factors among infants receiving routine health care in public clinics in brazil. method: this cross-sectional study included 2 715 infants between 6 and 12 months old in 12 cities, in all five of the geographic regions of brazil. information regarding the child and its feeding habits was obtained from the mother or other caregiver, using a questionnaire. nutritional status was determined based on height and weight measurements. the hemoglobin concentration was measured using the hemocue portable hemoglobinometer. anemia was defined as hemoglobin < 11 g/dl. the infants? eating habits were assessed based on what they were eating around the time of the questionnaire interviews. the association between anemia and the different variables was evaluated through bivariate analysis, followed by multiple logistic regression using a hierarchical selection model. results: the prevalence of anemia for the entire group was 65.4%. multiple regression analysis identified the following risk factors for anemia: living in the southeastern region of brazil (odds ratio (or) = 1.57, 95% confidence interval (95% ci) = 1.25- 1.99), maternal age < 20 years (or = 1.58, 95% ci = 1.21-2.07), birthweight < 2 500 g (or = 2.09, 95% ci = 1.48-2.95), not being breast-fed (or = 1.28, 95% ci = 1.02-1.61), receiving both breast milk and other foods (or = 1.40, 95% ci = 1.10-1.78), and male gender (or = 1.24, 95% ci = 1.06-1.46). conclusions: the high proportion of anemic children indicates the need to emphasize, in prenatal and infant health programs, intervention measures for anemia control. our results could guide these measures, focusing on the groups at greatest risk, such as low birthweight babies and the children of adolescent mothers.

Abstract: objective: to examine the determining factors of anemia and iron deficiency in children attending two day care centers in the town of pontal, southeast of brazil. methods: cross-sectional study was conducted in 192 children aged 12 to 72 months. personal data (age, sex, use of medicinal iron supplements, duration of breast-feeding, type of delivery, prenatal care, weight, and height), and socioeconomic data (number of co-inhabitants, parental schooling, and per capita family income) were obtained and evaluated together with hemoglobin, serum transferrin receptor, ferritin, and iron deficiency anemia. results: age was the variable that most affected iron nutritional status, with higher hemoglobin values, lower transferrin receptor concentrations, higher ferritin values and lower iron deficiency anemia being detected with increasing age. the other studied variables did not show any correlation with iron nutritional status. conclusion: the obtained data suggest that control strategies for this preschool population should be especially directed at younger children.
