Abstract: introduction: the amazon region of brazil is endemic for malaria. in the state of santa catarina, malaria was eliminated in the 1980s. since then, a few sporadic isolated autochthonous cases have occurred. however, because malaria vectors are present within brazilian territory and extensive endemic areas exist in this country, along with the great mobility of people in tourist areas of santa catarina, there is the likelihood of reintroduction of the disease. methods: the following data were used: the database of the entomology group of the national health foundation, santa catarina (acces, 1997-2000); the epidemiological surveillance information system of the health surveillance department (malaria/sc); and the notifiable disease information system (sinan/sc). these data were transferred to and analyzed in the microsoft office excel 2007 software. results: collections were carried out in 48 municipalities and 159 localities, and 12,310 culicids, 11,546 anophelines (93.7%) and 764 others (6.2%) were identified. three subgenera and 13 species of anophelines were identified. conclusions: given that in the municipalities investigated, important vectors such as anopheles cruzii and anopheles albitasis were found to be present, with movements of infected individuals from endemic areas, these areas can be considered to be receptive and vulnerable to malaria. these species are suspected of being responsible for malaria transmission in this region, especially in the municipalities of gaspar, indaial and rodeio.

The species richness presented here is minimal when compared to the total recorded for Brazil, but it is an important step to improve the knowledge about the geographic distribution of these insects.

The objective of this quantitative study is to identify the profile of the professional curators that work in the state of Santa Catarina's museums, in Brazil. Bardin's (2004) technique of content analysis was utilized throughout the study. Data collection was done by means of a questionnaire.

Abstract: objective: to provide an overview of hepatitis b infection in brazil overall, in the south of brazil, and in the state of santa catarina (in southeastern brazil) for the period of 1996 through 2002, taking into consideration such epidemiological aspects as age and sex. source of data: data were obtained through a literature review and by consulting with brazil's national health foundation and with santa catarina's department of epidemiological surveillance. results: in brazil, from 1996 through 2000, hepatitis b was the second most prevalent type of viral hepatitis (25%), with hepatitis a leading in terms of the proportion of cases (43%). in santa catarina there was a predominance of hepatitis b in relation to other types of hepatitis from 1997 through 2001. in both brazil and santa catarina there was a larger number of cases among males than among females. in terms of age, the highest incidence was found among those 20 to 49 years old in santa catarina and among those over 30 for brazil overall. the south of brazil was the country's region with the highest incidence of hepatitis b from 1997 through 1999. in santa catarina the largest number of cases from 1996 through 2002 occurred in the southern part of the state, followed by the northeastern and far western sections of the state. conclusions: the number of cases of hepatitis b is still growing in brazil, and it is important to consider that underreporting may have affected the results described in this study. throughout brazil, vaccination should be extended to include adolescents in regions that have a moderate to high incidence of hepatitis b.
