Abstract: The invasive Asian tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) was first reported in central Africa in 2000, in Cameroon, with the indigenous mosquito species Ae. aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae). Today, this invasive species is present in almost all countries of the region, including the Central African Republic (CAR), where it was first recorded in 2009. As invasive species of mosquitoes can affect the distribution of native species, resulting in new patterns of vectors and concomitant risk for disease, we undertook a comparative study early and late in the wet season in the capital and the main cities of CAR to document infestation and the ecological preferences of the two species. In addition, we determined the probable geographical origin of invasive populations of Ae. albopictus with two mitochondrial DNA genes, COI and ND5. Analysis revealed that Ae. aegypti was more abundant earlier in the wet season and Ae. albopictus in the late wet season. Used tyres were the most heavily colonized productive larval habitats for both species in both seasons. The invasive species Ae. albopictus predominated over the resident species at all sites in which the two species were sympatric. Mitochondrial DNA analysis revealed broad low genetic diversity, confirming recent introduction of Ae. albopictus in CAR. Phylogeographical analysis based on COI polymorphism indicated that the Ae. albopictus haplotype in the CAR population segregated into two lineages, suggesting multiple sources of Ae. albopictus. These data may have important implications for vector control strategies in central Africa.

Abstract: thermal requirements of aedes (stegomyia) albopictus skuse, 1894 (diptera, culicidae) under laboratory conditions. allochtonous species of ae. albopictus in the american continent can be found in fourteen brazilian states - about fifteen years had been elapsed since the first report of the presence of this species in brazilian territory. considering its potential epidemiological importance and its adaptation to several habitats, it was determined, for this species, the threshold temperature and the thermal constant for egg, larval and pupal stages under laboratory conditions under four constant temperatures and 12:12 hours light-dark photoperiod. the threshold temperature for the egg phase and for the first instar were quite similar: 9.07 oc (k=214.46 degree days) and 9.23 oc (k= 36.64 degree days), respectively. for 2nd, 3rd and 4th instar, the basal-temperature was higher, oscilating between 12.26 oc and 13.95 oc. the threshold temperature for the complete larval stage and for the pupal stage were 12.03 oc (k= 99.48 degree days) and 11.87 oc (k=32.40 degree days) for males and 11.95 oc (k=110.11 degree days) and 11.60 oc (k=35.30 degree days) for females, respectively.

Abstract: influence of temperature on longevity, fecundity, and haematophagic activity of aedes (stegomyia) albopictus skuse, 1894 (diptera, culicidae) under laboratory condition. based on adults of aedes albopictus maintained under four constant temperatures, 15oc, 20oc, 25oc and 30oc, longevity of males and females, fecundity, eggs viability, number of days from emergence to the first bloodsucking, and duration of the preoviposition period were observed. the average of the longevity for female was 19.45, 59.35, 61.55 and 42.72 days, under 15oc, 20oc, 25oc and 30oc, respectively. the greatest average number of bloodsucking per female was 8.32, under 25oc. the average number of eggs per female was 1.00, 73.91, 269.87 and 183.69, and the greatest rates of viable eggs per female was 25oc and 30oc. the haematophagic activities and the oviposition were significantly influenced by temperature.

Abstract: to verify the possible occurrence of aedes aegypti (linnaeus, 1761) and aedes albopictus (skuse, 1894) in a rural area in northern paraná, brazil, a water tank was installedon a farm, to work as an artificial breeding site. collections were carried out every 15 days, during a period of 2 years. 12,876 culicidae larvae, belonging to 10 different species, including aedes aegypti and aedes albopictus, were collected, indicating their occurrence.

Abstract: for the first time, the occurrence of aedes (stegomyia) albopictus in an urban area of the city of fortaleza, northeastern, brazil, is reported. from january to july 2005, ovitraps were used to collect eggs from aedes spp., which were kept under laboratory conditions to develop into the adult phase. the resultant mosquitoes were identified and subjected to dengue virus isolation tests. thirteen specimens of aedes albopictus, all females, were identified. no dengue virus was isolated in any of the mosquito pools. even though aedes albopictus has not been incriminated in brazilian dengue outbreaks, the possibility of dengue virus transmission by these mosquitoes cannot be dismissed.

Abstract: Aedes albopictus (Skuse, 1884) (Diptera: Culicidae), a mosquito native to Asia, has recently invaded all five continents. In Central Africa it was first reported in the early 2000s, and has since been implicated in the emergence of arboviruses such as dengue and chikungunya in this region. Recent genetic studies of invasive species have shown that multiple introductions are a key factor for successful expansion in new areas. As a result, phenotypic characters such as vector competence and insecticide susceptibility may vary within invasive pest species, potentially affecting vector efficiency and pest management. Here we assessed the genetic variability and population genetics of Ae. albopictus isolates in Cameroon (Central Africa), thereby deducing their likely geographic origin.

Abstract: Studies on the biology and mating behaviour of male mosquitoes are of major importance in a frame of a Sterile Insect Technique which could be used against mosquito vector species. Most particularly, the assumption of possible multiple inseminations in mosquito species must be investigated in order to optimize alternative mosquito control methods (Sterile Insect Techniques with genetically modified mosquitoes, cytoplasmic incompatibility, radiation…). The occurrence of multiple insemination events was investigated after 2 field samplings of Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) in La Reunion Island using microsatellite markers. Respectively, 14 and 13 females after the first and the second sampling laid eggs. Seven wild females out of the 27 laying females were found with a progeny involving more than one father. This result is important for the new alternative mosquito control methods and raises the importance of pre- and post-copulatory competition.
