Abstract: Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization procedures were used to investigate the pitting corrosion behaviors in the simulated body fluid of AISI 316L stainless steel treated by high current pulsed electron beam (HCPEB). The results showed that the corrosion resistance of 316L samples was significantly improved after HCPEB treatment, which was demonstrated by the increased polarization resistance (Rp) and decreased interface capacitance. The samples after 5 pulses are prone to pitting due to the existence of remnant MnS inclusions or holes in the crater centers. Comparatively, the sample after 20 pulses of HCPEB treatment shows the best corrosion resistance. Its corrosion current density has been decreased to 1/15 of the initial samples, which can be attributed to the selective surface purification effect and removal of physical damages with increasing number of pulses.

Abstract: abstract - samples of high purity grade and commercial purity grade type aisi 304l and aisi 316l steels were studied by the potentiodynamic and potentiostatic techniques in a naturally aerated 3.5% nacl aqueous solution at a controlled temperature of (23±2)°c. the anodic polarization curves of the potentiodynamic technique showed that not always is it possible to determine pitting potential: most of the curves of commercial purity grade steels displayed a smooth curvature in the region where the current density should increase sharply. the density current versus time potentiostatic curves also showed different shapes according to the purity grade steels: for the commercial purity grade steels, the current density showed large oscillations with time (related to unstable pits), whereas for the high purity grade steels, a regular behavior of current density as a function of time was found (related to stable pits)

Abstract: a computational code was developed for the modeling of pitting corrosion in stainless steel with mns inclusions. the approach used was based in previously existing theoretical models, with the inclusion of metallurgical effects. the implementation allowed the visualization of the pitting evolution process for times up to 30 days of exposure. the results have shown the occurrence of metastable and stable pits. furthermore, when they are nucleated in regions in which there are mns inclusions, the probability of stable pits occurrence is greatly increased.

Abstract: By means of macro inspection, X ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, optical microscopy and EDS, corrosion of heat exchanger pipe bundle of 316L stainless steel for a distillation tower overhead was analyzed. It was shown that microstructure of 316L stainless steel is basically eligible. Almost two forms of invalidated corrosion exist in this kind of corrosion, one is pitting corrosion by chloride ion, and the another is stress corrosion by stress and environmental corrosive medium.

Abstract: A method for grabbing and analyzing in-situ images was established to study pitting corrosion in 304 stainless steel. Using a self-developed Visual C program, images obtained upon potentiostatic polarization were analyzed. It was found that there was a liner relationship between pitting ratio and reaction electric quantity. Besides, lots of small pits became a larger pit, and grays moved towards smaller values and double peaks were observed on the gray histograms when pitting corrosion happened.

Abstract: The corrosion behavior of 316L stainless steel in seawater was investigated by measurements of critical pitting temperature,cyclic anodic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy under different temperature.The results indicated that two 316L specimens with different grain size showed similar critical pitting temperature.The increase of seawater temperature led to the linear decrease of pitting potential and repassivation potential.The pitting resistance of the fine grain steel decreased larger than that of coarse grain steel with temperature increasing, the latter had a higher pitting potential about 60 mV at 85℃.Compared with the coarse grain steel,the surface of passive film formed on the fine grain steel showed more defects and thereby which showed a shorter incubation time of pitting corrosion at 65℃.

Abstract: This paper investigates the corrosion fatigue (CF) crack initiation behavior of 316L stainless steel in Hank's solution which simulates bodylike fluid. The CF experiments were conducted under the conditions of electrochemically accelerated, free immersion and pre-polarized pitting potential. The results showed that 316L stainless steel was susceptible to pitting corrosion in Hank's solution. Intergranular corrosion occurred obviously at the bottom of pits where the CF cracks initiated by the combined action of alternating stress and corrosive medium for the notch effect of stress concentrated in the grain boundaries.The CF crack propagation is both intergranular and transgranular.
Corrosion and Inhibition of 316L stainless steel in neutral medium by 2-Mercaptobenzimidazole

Abstract: The electrochemical behavior of 316L stainless steel (316L SS) in NaCl solution by using potentiondynamic, EDX and scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques was determined. The addition effect of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MBI) on the pitting corrosion of 316L SS in NaCl solutions were investigated at different temperatures (25, 40, 50 and 60 °C). The results indicate that the increase of MBI concentration leads to shift the pitting potential to more positive potential, i.e. pitting corrosion inhibition. The corrosion inhibition behavior of MBI argued to the adsorption of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole, which can impede the aggressive anions to reach the base 316L SS surface. The protection efficiency increases with increasing MBI concentration but decreased with the increasing of the temperature.

Abstract: The Potentiostatic-Galva nostatic (P-G) transient response technique was used to study the pitting inhibitors. Using this technique, the features of the P-G response were investigated in the following systems: 304SS in 0.1 mol/L NaCl containing n-decylamine (KA) or dodecylbenzene sulfonic sodium (DBS). According to the P-G response results ,the pitting resistance of KA and DBS were evaluated, and the effect of inhibitors on the initiation and development of the pitting corrosion was explored preliminarily.
