Barriers to Research and Implications for Training Counselors
James R Ruby
Cypriot Journal of Educational Sciences , 2013,
Abstract: Research is an important part of quality clinical practice in the field of counseling. This study addresses the constraints that produce a gap in master’s level practitioner research among counselors in Illinois. Ninety-nine master’s level clinicians responded to surveys and answered a series of questions regarding what constrains them from being more involved in research. These respondents provided valuable feedback regarding possible recommendations for training that might encourage increased research activity for future master’s level counselors. Training improvements such as mentored research activity and training in less complex research methods were indicated. Susan Braube Stillman, Ed.D.
Grounded Theory Review : an International Journal , 2011,
Abstract: This study, based in the substantive area of school counselors, was conducted using classical grounded theory, an inductive, systemic method of data collection and analysis. The core variable, or the school counselors’ main concern and how they were resolving it, emerged as the need to develop and implement a comprehensive program within the complex ecology of a school. Working the system: Aligning to advantage was discovered to be the school counselors’ resolving process. The data revealed that as school counselors work the system, they engage in strategic actions of aligning to advantage themselves, others, and/or the overall system. Working the system comprises three stages: accessing, engaging, and sustaining, each associated with aligning behaviors, which have personal, interpersonal, and structural dimensions. The theory is useful to school counselors and other leaders engaged in systemic change in complex ecological systems.

A Study of Counselors' Legal Challenges and Their Perceptions of Their Ability to Respond
International Journal of Education Policy and Leadership , 2008,
Abstract: The authors explore the results of a study that assessed the types and frequency of legal issues encountered by counselors and counselors’ perceptions of their ability to respond to these issues. They also assessed whether the participants’ perceptions were related to practice setting, years of experience, completion of a course in ethics, recent completion of continuing education in ethics or legal issues, state licensure status, certification by the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC), and highest degree earned. Results demonstrate that counselors feel most prepared to deal with situations encountered most often, but that school counselors do not feel as prepared to face most ethical and legal issues.
Ondokuz May?s University Journal of Education , 2009,
Abstract: This study aims to examine the effect of attending a psychodrama group on the perceptions of the problem solving skills of counselors. 21 counselors who work at the state schools in Gaziantep have participated in the study. Firstly, counselors who volunteered to participate in the study were assigned to the experimental and control groups randomly. Then a Problem Solving Inventory was administered to both groups as a pre-test. A 10 session psychodrama application has been conducted with the participants in the experimental group while the control group received no treatment. The same measurement tools have been applied twice on both experimental and control groups: one week after the end of the first application and 6 months later. The data gathered have been analyzed by using 2X3 way ANOVA to examine the effectiveness of the treatment. The analysis of the data has indicated an increase in the perceptions of the problem solving skills of the counselors who attended the psychodrama group. However, this change has not been observed in follow- up measurement.
