Measurement of Efficiency Using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Social Factors Affecting the Technical Efficiency in Dairy Cattle Farms within the Province of Izmir, Turkey

Abstract: Amongst the agricultural regions of Turkey, Aegean region takes the first place in milk production with 18%. As for Aegean itself, the province of Izmir comes second with 17%. In this study, technical efficiency levels of 94 dairy farms in the province of Izmir were measured using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method. For assumptions of CRS (Constant Returns to Scale), 52% and for assumptions of VRS (Variable Returns to Scale), 62% of the dairy farms were found fully efficient. When, the farms were grouped according to their number of cows, it was noticeable that there were differences amongst the groups in terms of efficiency values. As the farm size expanded the efficiency scores increased. In farms with <50 cows, input and output losses are important. When farmer based social and intellectual factors affecting dairy cattle farming were investigated, it was observed that number of family members, experience and level of reading daily papers increased as the scores of efficiency in farms increased.

Abstract: In this study, the status of technical-industrial groups of Iran’s state universities of technology is studied with two approaches of documental study and survey research. Based on the analysis of this research, the effectiveness and efficiency of technical-engineering groups is not mutually balanced. Efficiency of technical-engineering groups of Iran’s universities is more than their effectiveness. Therefore, it is recommended that the effectiveness and efficiency of technical-engineering groups are paid attention more than ever. It must be planned in a systematic way by utilization of effective actions to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of technical-engineering groups simultaneously.

Abstract: The paper uses SFA technique to measure the regional R&D technical efficiency in China during 1999~2008, applies spatial measurement economics technique to analyze the correlation and convergence characteristics, and builds a spatial convergency model to analyze the spatial convergency characteristics of the regional R&D technical efficiency. The analysis result shows that there appears positive correlation characteristic and an absolute convergence trend on the regional R&D technical efficiency in China, and the effect of spatial geographical factors on the regional R&D technical efficiency is significant.

Abstract: Weak form of the Efficiency Market Hypothesis (EMH) excludes predictions of future market movements from historical data and makes the technical analysis (TA) out of law. However the technical analysis is widely used by traders and speculators who steadely refuse to consider the market as a "fair game" and survive with such believe. In the paper we make a conjecture that TA and EMH correspond to different time regimes and show how both technical analysis predictions for short times and realistic statistical data for larger times can be obtained in a simple single stock model of Gauge Theory of Arbitrage.

Abstract: This study analyses technical efficiency of wheat growing farms in Southeastern Anatolia in Turkey. Data were collected from farms through a questionnaire study carried out following 2000-2001 growing season. Analysis was accomplished in two steps. In the first step, technical efficiency scores were calculated using an input oriented Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). In the second step, Tobit regression analysis was used to identify determinants of technical efficiency. Results indicate that there is considerable scope for cost reduction in wheat farming in the Region. Main determinant of technical inefficiency was determined to be land fragmentation.

Abstract: The iUPQC is a Unified Power Quality Conditioner in which the series converter emulates a sinusoidal current source and the shunt converter emulates a sinusoidal voltage source. This approach provides indirect power quality compensation of the load voltage and the source current. Recent studies have suggested that the iUPQC has technical advantages in comparison with the conventional UPQC due to its reduced switching frequency characteristic. In this paper, these technical advantages are investigated. Thus, the iUPQC performance is verified through a 150 kVA industrial equipment and technical design specifications are discussed: the iUPQC power circuit design, the converters arrangement and the driver configuration. Experimental results are provided to validate the technical feasibility and power quality compensation performance.

Abstract: The agricultural companies are operating in the environment with high level of competition and therefore it is for them important to retain respectively to improve their market position to reach higher measure of production process efficiency. As the principal measurement of the production performance was applied technical efficiency which is the assumption to reach the total economical efficiency of company. According to the results we can state that the technical efficiency measure has during analysed period declining trend. Since the year 2001 when the technical efficiency measure reached the highest level was registered decline of the technical efficiency, except the year 2005. The average level of the technical efficiency measure during the years 2006 and 2007 is possible to explain with increasing differences between the analysed companies. Just few companies achieved very good results in the production process. Based on the results of the technical efficiency measure is possible to expect deepening of differences between the companies in future.

Abstract: Paddy is related with China's food security as the main food crop. This paper analyzes the efficiency of paddy production in China using BCC model of DEA method. The results show that the production efficiency of paddy is low and unstable from 1990 to 2008. The inputs of paddy production are unreasonable in many years. The pure technical efficiency is smooth when the scale efficiency isn’t stable, and the scale efficiency is smooth when the pure technical efficiency is unstable. The tendencies of pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency are opposite. Overall, the pure technical efficiency has great impact on paddy production; the effect of scale efficiency is weak.

Abstract: the objective of this study was to measure the technical and scale efficiencies of milk-producing farms in the state of minas gerais, considering different production levels, and also to identify the determining factors of their technical efficiency. the analyses were carried out using both data envelopment analysis (dea) and an econometric tobit model. the data consisted of information collected in 2005 relating to 771 milk-producing farms. the results indicated that most of the farms exhibit technical inefficiency problems. small farmers have the potential to expand their production and productivity, increasing technical efficiency, since they were performing with increasing returns to scale. the large farmers presented the best measures of technical efficiency, which is explained, partly, by factors such as access to rural credit, training and technical support.
Technical Efficiency Analysis of Fisheries: Toward an Optimal Fleet Capacity

Abstract: Technical efficiency analysis has a vital role in fishing management and decommissioning programs. In this context, ignoring the variation across the regions in the field of natural endowment and level of economic development may lead to biased estimates of efficiency scores. Therefore, efficiency analysis in the southern coastal provinces of Iran, which is the aim of this study, was investigated by a common metafrontier production function that was identical for all studied provinces. The required data was obtained from a random sample of 520 fishery vessels. The results of the estimating metafrontier showed that mean technical efficiency for selected provinces varies between 0.408 and 0.542, while ranging between 0.650 and 0.728 when assessed based on the regional frontier. The highest mean technical efficiency based on metafrontier is devoted to Sistan-va-Baluchestan, while Bushehr has the lowest mean technical efficiency. The results also indicated that the main reasons, beyond the fact that Sistan-va-Baluchestan has the highest technical operation in comparison with other provinces are access to more suitable vessels and especially, access to the deeper water in the Oman Sea and Indian Ocean to fish the big pelagic species.
