Abstract: A thermal energy estimation method is described in the paper. It may be taken as the base for creation special thermal energy audit devices in ship heat-exchange systems. The analysis of errors in thermal energy estimation, measuring circuit, installation diagram for calibration of heat flow density converters are given in the article. The considered method is direct in spite of the enthalpy method applied nowadays.

Abstract: this work is concerned with the coupled estimation of the heat generated by the reaction (qr) and the overall heat transfer parameter (ua) during the terpolymerization of styrene, butyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate from temperature measurements and the reactor heat balance. by making specific assumptions about the dynamics of the evolution of ua and qr, we propose a cascade of observers to successively estimate these two parameters without the need for additional measurements of on-line samples. one further aspect of our approach is that only the energy balance around the reactor was employed. it means that the flow rate of the cooling jacket fluid was not required.

Abstract: In a recent work, Jarzynski and Wojcik (2004 Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 230602) have shown by using the properties of Hamiltonian dynamics and a statistical mechanical consideration that, through contact, heat exchange between two systems initially prepared at different temperatures obeys a fluctuation theorem. Here, another proof is presented, in which only macroscopic thermodynamic quantities are employed. The detailed balance condition is found to play an essential role. As a result, the theorem is found to hold under very general conditions.

Abstract: Statistical estimation in many contemporary settings involves the acquisition, analysis, and aggregation of datasets from multiple sources, which can have significant differences in character and in value. Due to these variations, the effectiveness of employing a given resource (e.g., a sensing device or computing power) for gathering or processing data from a particular source depends on the nature of that source. As a result, the appropriate division and assignment of a collection of resources to a set of data sources can substantially impact the overall performance of an inferential strategy. In this expository article, we adopt a general view of the notion of a resource and its effect on the quality of a data source, and we describe a framework for the allocation of a given set of resources to a collection of sources in order to optimize a specified metric of statistical efficiency. We discuss several stylized examples involving inferential tasks such as parameter estimation and hypothesis testing based on heterogeneous data sources, in which optimal allocations can be computed either in closed form or via efficient numerical procedures based on convex optimization.
