The Effects of a Summer Camp Experience on Factors of Resilience in At-Risk Youth

Abstract: This pilot study addressed the impact of a summer camp experience on at-risk middle school youth by exploring self-reported growth in skill development and resilience. Campers who attended a five-weeksummer day camp were compared to a control group who maintained typical activities throughout the summer. Results showed statistically significant differences in the campers’ belief of a good future for themselves (U = 179.40, P = 0.05). Campers reported sustained or positive growth in domains of social skills and positive values from the baseline to a six-month follow up. Three significant themes emerged from individual in-depth interviews including: (a) engagement influences skill competence, (b) the campenvironment expands positive choice and availability of positive occupations, and (c) males developed skills and resilience from informal physical activity while no equivalent existed for females. Middle school aged at-risk youth can benefit from occupation-based summer camp programs that promote active engagement in an enriched environment and sustain gains once they return to high-risk environments. This research contributes to a growing understanding of the potential contribution of occupational therapy in the design and delivery of effective summer camp experiences for at-risk youth.
Summer Camp at Sport injuries: a Tool for Safety Planning  [cached]

Abstract: This study analyses surveillance data on summer camp sport injuries. The aim of this study was to create a typology of sport injury characteristics and circumstances specifically designed to elaborate safety strategies. Seven variables describing aspects of 337 summer camp sports injuries registered over a 3 month period in 8 different camps summer were analyzed simultaneously using, in sequence, the factorial analysis of correspondence (FAC) and the hierarchical ascendant classification (HAC). Relationships between sport injury characteristics and injured pupils’ age and gender were measured. Five sport injury patterns as a typology was obtained and significant relationships were found to exist amongst sport injury patterns, age and gender. Findings revealed that the construction of a sport injury typology - by means of methods similar to those employed in the current study – may be of use for those concerned with camp sport injury prevention, such as camp managers and administrators.

Abstract: Drawing on the experiences of REACH Trust, this paper highlights practical lessons of using research processes and outcomes to promote equity in health policy and practice. The REACH Trust is first introduced. Case studies are then used to highlight how REACH Trust has worked in a participatory manner with key stakeholders at community, national and international levels. In addition to participatory working there are a number of cross-cutting themes that facilitate the uptake of research findings which is discussed in turn: (1) multi-disciplinary and multi-method approaches (2) advocating research findings at strategic forums, and (3) the use of strategic frames. In the conclusion it is argued that research has a critical role to play in responding to the urgent need for the Malawian health sector to develop and act on evidence-based practice in a more gender equitable and pro-poor manner. Abstract: Aims and Objectives: To report a synthesis of the literature on the meaning of trust in the context of patients’ experiences of nursing. The review question was “How do patients describe the meaning of trust in the nursing relationship?” Background: Trust is essential in nursing as it has the potential to create opportunities for the human being to gain faith, hope and meaning in life as well as open up for new experiences. Trust is an interpersonal and essential element of all patient-nurse relationships and requires nurses to create a trusting relationship with the patients. Design: Systematic qualitative literature review. Methods: Systematic searches were conducted for the period January 2002 to December 2012, updated in January 2014. 20 papers were included. Results: Four categories emerged: Attitudes related to trust, indicating that trust is fundamental and existential; Experiences of trust, concerning how trust can be sensed; The patient-nurse relationship, revealing the qualities of the person who creates trust; and Where trust occurs, illuminating the contextual relevancies of trust. Conclusions: Patients’ experiences of trust in nursing are dependent on the nurses’ knowledge, level of commitment in the dialogue to creating and developing the relationship and contextual issues. Implications for nursing practice: Reflection on a trusting relationship with the patient is necessary for a deeper conceptual understanding of trust in nursing. Clinical nurse researchers nurse supervisors, managers and nurse educatorsshould discuss different areas of trust during nursing supervision and focus-group meetings as well as with nursing graduates to ensure that nurses develop knowledge of how to create a trusting patient-nurse relationship.

Abstract: The century we live in, the environmental problems that arise in connection with the fast depletion of natural resources now show their effects globally. Especially after the Industrial Revolution, people were reduced the environmental values to vehicle position in their economically enrichment race and these values were used unconsciously and doomed to extinction. However, these people don’tknow that they have been chopping down their own branch with their unconcerned attitudes. Uninhibited global environmental problems threaten the future of humanity as a common concern of all people. For constructing a more healthy human-nature relationship, giving people environmental awareness through environmental education is required. Ecology Based Summer Camp Project which was held in 2011 in cooperation with Ni de University and TUBITAK can be given as anexample of awareness-raising activity. This and similar projects play a key role in overcoming many environmental problems by providing students and their teachers with environmental awareness.

Abstract: Adverse drug reactions are common, but only 15% are immunologically mediated. As drug use continues to increase, the incidence of drug allergy will also continue to rise. Drug allergies have a significant impact on clinical practice, drug development and public health. One of the significant consequences of allergic drug reactions is causing the use of potentially less effective, more expensive or more toxic drugs in the future. The symptoms may be life threatening. The diagnosis of drug allergies relies on clinical histories, skin tests and a very few validated in-vitro tests. Education of the patient and primary care physician is an important component of management. This article reviews the current understanding in the mechanisms and recognizing methods of drug allergy and the management of patients. (Journal of Current Pediatrics 2009; 7: 76-82)
Camp Sports Injuries: Analysis of Causes, Modes and Frequencies  [cached]

Abstract: The purpose of this study was the description of sports injuries sustained by campers at summer camps, aged 7-15 years. A sample of 8 camps from the Greek camp population participated in this sport injury surveillance study. Doctors and camp directors completed reports detailing the number of sports injuries events sustained and provided specific information about each event. During the period of the study, 337 sport injury reports were completed. A total of 237 (70.3%) boys and 100 (29.7%) girls reported having a sport injury. Age of campers sustaining a sport injury was 10-12 years old (60.8%). The frequency of sports injuries was highest during the first camp season. The leading causes of sports injuries in children’s were: falls, crushed by object, collision with other person and slips. Cut/scratch injuries were the most common diagnoses (38.9%). Football, basketball and volleyball were the most frequent sport activities for injuries. Reports based surveillance systems can be successfully used to conducts sport injury surveillance among children attending summer camps. Data collected via such systems can be used to calculate sports injury rates, to describe patterns of sport injury and to identify risk factors for camper – related sport injuries. The results provide necessary information to develop prevention interventions to decrease the number of youth whose camp experiences are negatively affected by sport injury.

Abstract: To rely or not on the state actions is in European Union an even greater challenge than before, because the national authority itself is a part of a larger evolving economic system, clearly regulated but unpredictable when put to work. We all wish more, cheaper and better merchandise to purchase, a cleaner and safer environment, leaving the safeguarding of the macroeconomic stability, as a fundamental condition for all these, to the state. Trust should be that situation when the citizens’ expectations regarding the macroeconomic decisions were fulfilled. Remains an issue how to make trust function when the authorities were assumed to take into account the interest of all voters, but they fail to raise employment, to increase incomes, and GINI index grows.

Abstract: .- The Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility (TPSR) Model (Hellison, 1995, 2011) has been used in numerous after-school and gym class settings. The typical make-up of TPSR programs is all boys or mixed-gendered (e.g., Tom Martinek’s Project Effort in Greensboro, NC; Dave Walsh’s Coaching Club in San Francisco, CA), with there being little written on programming for all girls. So when I was approached in the spring of 2010 by a women’s shelter in Detroit, Michigan, to lead a physical activity program for an all girls’ summer camp, I was excited about using the TPSR Model with this population. The purpose of this article is to outline the delivery of this TPSR Model program, including the challenges that were encountered, the successes that were experienced, and the overall lessons that were learned. This article concludes with a section that outlines the second year of the program, with a specific focus on programmatic changes and ideas for future programming efforts that were borne out of this second year. Resumen.- El modelo de Ense anza de la Responsabilidad Personal y Social (Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility, TPSR; Hellison, 1995, 2011) se ha utilizado en muchas clases de gimnasia y en programas extraescolares. Por lo general, estos programas se han llevado a cabo con grupos mixtos o sólo de chicos (por ejemplo, el Proyecto Esfuerzo de Tom Martinek en Greensboro, NC: El Club de Entrenamiento de Dave Walsh en San Francisco, CA), y las publicaciones relativas a programas realizados sólo con chicas son muy escasas. Por este motivo, cuando en la primavera de 2010 un refugio-hogar para mujeres me pidió un programa de actividad física para un campamento de verano sólo para chicas, me entusiasmó la idea de usar TPSR con esa población. Abstract: Severe iodine deficiency results in impaired thyroid hormone synthesis and thyroid enlargement. In the United States, adequate iodine intake is a concern for women of childbearing age and pregnant women. Beyond this high risk group iodine deficiency is not considered to be a significant problem. This case report describes a 12-year-old male with severe iodine deficiency disorder (IDD) resulting from restricted dietary intake due to multiple food allergies. We describe iodine replacement for this patient and continued monitoring for iodine sufficiency. Children with multiple food allergies, in particular those with restrictions to iodized salt and seafood, should be considered high risk for severe iodine deficiency.
