Spotting Prosodic Boundaries in Continuous Speech in French  [PDF]
V. Pagel,N. Carbonell,Y. Laprie,J. Vaissiere
Computer Science , 1998,
Abstract: A radio speech corpus of 9mn has been prosodically marked by a phonetician expert, and non expert listeners. this corpus is large enough to train and test an automatic boundary spotting system, namely a time delay neural network fed with F0 values, vowels and pseudo-syllable durations. Results validate both prosodic marking and automatic spotting of prosodic events.

This paper presents a conceptual approximation to the study of communicative competencies, taking some authors′ criteria with different approaches as a basis. Theoretical systematization of the topic by researchers is of vital importance to raise the quality of human resources formation and of the professional competency evaluation of the nursing resources in line with the changes in the curricula of the nursing career. Communicative competencies are defined as the potentialities of subjects to suitably relate to other people, expressed in three dimensions: affective-cognitive, communicative and sociocultural. Several approaches were analyzed and the importance of acquiring and developing communicative competencies for the success of professional interaction process within different environments was underlined.

Abstract: In this research, two perceptual experiments were completed. In the first exper iment, the acoustic cues of stress in prosodic word of Standard Chinese were stu d ied, and the extents to which these acoustic cues contribute to the perception o f stress were investigated. The results showed that, according to the weight of contri bution to stressed word perception, the acoustic cues were duration, pitch, spec t ral tilt, and energy. In the second experiment, the influences of non acoustic factors on the perception of the prosodic word stress were investigated. The res u lts showed that listeners' linguistic knowledge of stress in prosodic word signi ficantly influences the result of stress perception.AbstractIn this research, two perceptual experiments were completed. Transforming Passive Listeners into Active Speakers: A Study with Portuguese Undergraduates in ‘English for the Social Sciences’  [cached]
Rita M. Amorim
English Language Teaching , 2013, DOI: 10.5539/elt.v6n4p110
Abstract: In the present context of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) or English as International Language (EIL), it has become extremely relevant to maximize speaking opportunities in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom which aim at developing fluency and real-life communication skills. University students in Portugal need to practice expressing their views and sharing opinions in English for their professional careers and for general international communication. With these aims in mind, ‘whole-class discussions’ were implemented in the subject ‘English for the Social Sciences’, but monitoring by the teacher revealed low voluntary participation. This classroom-based study began with two questionnaires distributed to a group of twenty intermediate to upper-intermediate undergraduates. They exposed speaking anxiety due to worries about producing accurate English, fear of poor performance and negative evaluation, and embarrassment to speak in front of colleagues. A two-step strategy was implemented to get as many students as possible speaking, by overcoming some of their linguistic and personality barriers. First, students attended two awareness-raising lessons on the aims of whole-class activities, the value of fluency, and today’s real-life communicative skills. Then, small ‘buzz-group’ discussions were implemented, prior to and in preparation of the ‘whole-class discussions’ to create a more supportive environment. Student interviews and teacher observation notes were used to collect participants’ perspectives. Findings revealed that passive listeners, when better informed and working in a less anxiety-inducing environment, can become active speakers.

Abstract: The present paper review the use of prosodic information in disambiguating syntactic structure in recent years.Firstly, this article introduces the prosodic properties and its function;secondly,it discusses the syntactic ambiguity and its models.Thirdly, two problems are analyzed from the point of view of speaker and listener:whether na?ve speakers spontaneously and reliably produce prosodic cues that resolve syntactic ambiguities in the natural context, and whether listeners use on-line prosodic information to inform initial syntactic parsing decisions. Then the characteristics of Chinese prosody and syntax are introduced, which followed by the corresponding study in China. Finally,it simply talks about what should be concerned in studying prosodic resolution of ambiguity in Chinese.
Computing Prosodic Morphology  [PDF]
George Anton Kiraz
Computer Science , 1996,
Abstract: This paper establishes a framework under which various aspects of prosodic morphology, such as templatic morphology and infixation, can be handled under two-level theory using an implemented multi-tape two-level model. The paper provides a new computational analysis of root-and-pattern morphology based on prosody.
How Listeners Weight Acoustic Cues to Intonational Phrase Boundaries  [PDF]

Abstract: The presence of an intonational phrase boundary is often marked by three major acoustic cues: pause, final lengthening, and pitch reset. The present study investigates how these three acoustic cues are weighted in the perception of intonational phrase boundaries in two experiments. Sentences that contained two intonational phrases with a critical boundary between them were used as the experimental stimuli. The roles of the three acoustic cues at the critical boundary were manipulated in five conditions. The first condition featured none of the acoustic cues. The following three conditions featured only one cue each: pause, final lengthening, and pitch reset, respectively. The fifth condition featured both pause duration and pre-final lengthening. A baseline condition was also included in which all three acoustic cues were preserved intact. Listeners were asked to detect the presence of the critical boundaries in Experiment 1 and judge the strength of the critical boundaries in Experiment 2. The results of both experiments showed that listeners used all three acoustic cues in the perception of prosodic boundaries. More importantly, these acoustic cues were weighted differently across the two experiments: Pause was a more powerful perceptual cue than both final lengthening and pitch reset, with the latter two cues perceptually equivalent; the effect of pause and the effects of the other two acoustic cues were not additive. These results suggest that the weighting of acoustic cues contributes significantly to the perceptual differences of intonational phrase boundary.
Computing Declarative Prosodic Morphology  [PDF]
Markus Walther
Computer Science , 1998,
Abstract: This paper describes a computational, declarative approach to prosodic morphology that uses inviolable constraints to denote small finite candidate sets which are filtered by a restrictive incremental optimization mechanism. The new approach is illustrated with an implemented fragment of Modern Hebrew verbs couched in MicroCUF, an expressive constraint logic formalism. For generation and parsing of word forms, I propose a novel off-line technique to eliminate run-time optimization. It produces a finite-state oracle that efficiently restricts the constraint interpreter's search space. As a byproduct, unknown words can be analyzed without special mechanisms. Unlike pure finite-state transducer approaches, this hybrid setup allows for more expressivity in constraints to specify e.g. token identity for reduplication or arithmetic constraints for phonetics.
