Differential Psychological Impact of Internet Exposure on Internet Addicts  [PDF]

Abstract: The study explored the immediate impact of internet exposure on the mood and psychological states of internet addicts and low internet-users. Participants were given a battery of psychological tests to explore levels of internet addiction, mood, anxiety, depression, schizotypy, and autism traits. They were then given exposure to the internet for 15 min, and re-tested for mood and current anxiety. Internet addiction was associated with long-standing depression, impulsive nonconformity, and autism traits. High internet-users also showed a pronounced decrease in mood following internet use compared to the low internet-users. The immediate negative impact of exposure to the internet on the mood of internet addicts may contribute to increased usage by those individuals attempting to reduce their low mood by re-engaging rapidly in internet use.
A Structural Equation Modeling of Motives, Behaviors of Internet Use and Related Social-Psychological Health

Abstract: The relation between Internet use behavior and Internet-related social-psychological health has been a major research focus in the field of Cyber-Psychology.However,previous studies show inconsistent results.Kraut et al.(1998) believed that the Internet use might replace some of the social activities the real life,resulting in reduced social involvement and negative mental health and social-psychological detriment.LaRose et al.(2001),on the other hand,found that frequent Internet use and accumulation of online experience could improve users' self-efficacy,reduce their stress level from Internet use as well as their general stress level,and reduce depression levels by means of reinforcing a social support system.Shaw and Gant's study(2002) obtained results similar to LaRose et al.(2001),and concluded that the Internet had positive effects on its users.In a factor analysis,Weiser(2001) identified two motives of Internet use,which are Goods-and-Information Acquisition and Socio-Affective Regulation.Weiser(2001) suggested that the Internet use based on Goods-and-Information may advance users' mental health by improving their social integration,whereas the Internet use based on Socio-Affective Regulation may reduce users' mental health by creating negative effects on their social integration.It can be seen that different Internet-related social-psychological effects may depend on different motives of Internet use. Based on the previous work conducted by others and by us(Shen,Li,et al.,2004;Xu,Zhang,et al.,2004;Zhu,Zhang,et al.,2005),we claimed that different motives of Internet use would cause different Internet use behaviors,leading to different social-psychological effects.We proposed a mediating model in which the relation between motive of Internet use and various social-psychological effects was mediated by Internet use behavior.We tested the model using structural equation modeling on a sample of 581 undergraduate students.In the model,the motives of Internet use consisted of two facets which were labeled as Social-Affective motive and Information-Acquisition motive.Pathological Internet use behavior consisted of three primary behaviors which were referred to as online impulsiveness,distraction/avoidance and online social superiority.The social-psychological health related to Internet use had five dimensions which were loneliness,social involvement,general depression,life happiness and life satisfaction.These five factors were further extracted into the two higher-order factors of social health and psychological health. Structural equation modeling results showed that the Information-Acquisition motive improved Internet user's social health,whereas the Social-Affective motive led to pathological Internet use behavioral patterns and,through the mediating effect of pathological Internet use behavior,the Social-Affective motive also played an indirect role in negatively affecting users' social health and psychological health.Overall,the Information

Abstract: The main goal of this study is to examine the effects of the extrinsic and intrinsic motivation, and the psychological burden on mature consumers regarding their Internet usage. “Psychological burden” refers to the emotional constraints such as anxiety and fears that make using technology uncomfortable. Here, we developed a research model and formulated hypotheses based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Abstract: Worldwide Internet addiction is a newly emerging mental health and social issue among the youths causing neurological complications, psychological disturbances and social problems. Internet addicts make the Internet urgency more vital than family, friends and work. Several studies exposed that anxiety, backache, blurred vision, dry eyes, headache, sleep disturbance, depression, poor academic performance etc. are results of Internet addiction. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the Internet addiction as well as its psychological distress and depression among university undergraduate students of Bangladesh. The study was conducted among 475 students selected from five universities of Bangladesh from July 2015 to September 2015. The selected universities were Southeast University, University of South Asia, Primeasia University, Northern University Bangladesh and State University of Bangladesh. Each willing participants were subject of this study and they shared their opinion. The Young’s Internet Addiction Test (IAT), the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-2) were used to determine Internet addiction, psychological distress and depression respectively. Results revealed that the university students showed varying degrees of Internet addiction, psychological distress and depression with respect to sex, age, year of study and residential status. The data revealed that 47.7% (127) male and 44.5% (93) female students showed severe Internet addiction followed by 27.1% (72) male and 33.9% (71) female students showed moderate Internet addiction, while 20.7% (55) male and 7.7% (16) female students had mild Internet addiction. The linkage between Internet addiction and sex was significant at P < 0.001. Furthermore, 29.7% (79) male and 32.5% (68) female students had psychological distress. Severe psychological depression was reported among 44.7% (119) male and 41.6% (87) female students. Equally year of study and residential status showed significant (P < 0.001; P < 0.05, P < 0.001) differences in Internet addiction and psychological depression. This study observed that university undergraduate students are at very close to the danger of Internet addiction and its pathological impact on psychological distress and depression. Therefore, the new generation is at great risk. However, without Internet scientific thinking is not possible. So only the rational use of the Internet can be fruitful in the long run.
An Analysis on the Correlation and Gender Difference between College Students’ Internet Addiction and Mobile Phone Addiction in Taiwan  [PDF]

Abstract: This study is aimed at constructing a correlative model between Internet addiction and mobile phone addiction; the aim is to analyse the correlation (if any) between the two traits and to discuss the influence confirming that the gender has difference on this fascinating topic; taking gender into account opens a new world of scientific study to us. The study collected 448 college students on an island as study subjects, with 61.2% males and 38.8% females. Moreover, this study issued Mobile Phone Addiction Scale and Internet Addiction Scale to conduct surveys on the participants and adopts the structural equation model (SEM) to process the collected data. According to the study result, (1) mobile phone addiction and Internet addiction are positively related; (2) female college students score higher than male ones in the aspect of mobile addiction. Lastly, this study proposes relevant suggestions to serve as a reference for schools, college students, and future studies based on the study results. 1. Introduction The current modes of information and communication technology such as computers, the Internet, and mobile phones have changed adolescents’ daily life drastically. In addition to being a convenience to people’s communication methods, technology unfortunately has negative side-effects. The most frequent negative side-effect is chronic addiction to technological mediums or excessive human-machine interactions involved. People rely on technological devices to a level of full-blown addiction to obtain pleasure as a psychological benefit. They depend on technology significantly in the hope that it would lessen negative moods or increase positive outcomes [1–4]. According to Griffiths [5], technological addiction is a subcategory of behavioural addiction. He defines it as a behavioural addiction which involves human-machine interaction and is nonchemical in nature. However, if speaking from the perspective of substance-based addictions, technological addiction does not produce recognizable signs or features (e.g., the biological indicators of nicotine addiction), and the addicts may develop unacceptable social behaviour and attitude in their daily routines or social life [5, 6]. In this case, there is no denying that technological addiction has caused a negative impact on an individual’s life in a harmful manner. Abstract: 渴求感特别是线索诱发渴求是成瘾行为维持和戒断失败的主要原因。本研究通过两个实验分别探讨了网络相关文字刺激和压力对网络成瘾者线索诱发渴求的影响。研究一以25名网络成瘾大学生为被试,以网络相关和中性词语为实验材料,采用线索暴露范式(Cue-reactivity Paradigm)的研究发现,只有网络相关文字刺激能显著诱发网络成瘾者的渴求感。在此基础上,研究二以40名网络成瘾大学生为被试,以公开演讲范式为压力诱发情境,以网络相关词语和中性词语为实验材料,采用线索暴露范式(Cue-reactivity Paradigm)的研究发现,在压力条件下,网络相关文字能诱发网络成瘾者更为强烈的渴求感。本研究深化了对网络成瘾形成维持心理机制的研究,也为网络成瘾的干预矫正提供了思路。
Craving, especially the cue-induced craving not only maintains and exacerbates the addictive behaviors, but also often leads to relapse. Based on existed researches, this study aimed to investigate the effect of Internet-related word stimulus and stress on Internet addicts' cue-induced craving through two experiments. In the first experiment, 25 Internet addicts participated in the Cue-reactivity experiment with Internet-related words and neutral words. The results showed that, only Internet-related words could significantly arouse Internet addicts' cue-induced craving. And in the second experiment, we examined the effect of stress on Internet addicts' cue-induced craving among 40 Internet addicts. Participants' stress was induced by Public speaking paradigm. The results showed that, under the condition of stress, Internet-related words could arouse more intense carving for Internet among Internet addicts. This study might deepen our understanding of the formation and maintenance mechanism of Internet addiction. Also, it provides a way for the intervention of Internet addiction from the perspective of craving.
Reshaping Digital Inequality in the European Union: How Psychological Barriers Affect Internet Adoption Rates  [cached]

Abstract: In the past years, scholars have assessed the social differences that the Internet has generated from its use (or its non-use). The issue has been largely referred to as Digital Divide, describing the social division between those who are using the technology and those who are not; or in other words, the "haves" and "have nots" of the Internet. Generally, the phenomenon has been explained from a perspective in which infrastructural and demographics aspects are considered as the main barriers to overcome in order to narrow this digital inequality. Albeit partially true, this trend of research does not consider people's perceptions toward the Internet and how they can also explain connectivity, or lack thereof. Analyzing data from 1) the 55th Eurobarometer collected by the EU Commission (N = 16,134); and 2) data collected from the National Statistical Institutes of each State Member of the European Union, this paper suggests that there is a necessity to approach the problem from another perspective. This does not mean that the other trend was wrong, but rather, one explanation of the problem is not enough. Thus, this research enlightens how psychological barriers are involved in impeding EU citizens' complete adoption of the Internet. For instance, perceptions of what opportunities were missed by not accessing the WWW, perceptions of the kind of content that should be on the Net and perceptions of how the Internet would change their daily lives were all factors that indicated that not only demographical or structural obstacles were involved. In a sense, people do not think that they are missing many Job-Training, Consumption or improvement of Social Integration opportunities by not being connected to the Internet. In addition, the content that should be available over the Net is not appealing enough to induce them to seek out Internet access.
A Comparative Analysis of Psychological Disorders between Internet Addicted Students and Ordinary Internet Users in Zabol University of Medical Sciences  [PDF]

Abstract: Nowadays, using the Internet, for academic and non-academic activities, is an integral part of students’ daily life. Studies showed that excessive use of the Internet has negative effects on physical and mental health. The present research was conducted in order to compare the psychological disorders of Internet addicted students and ordinary Internet users in Zabol University of medical sciences. It applied a causal-comparative method. Through applying purposive sampling method, 252 undergraduate and postgraduate students of Zabol University of Medical Sciences were selected in May 2015. Data collection was performed using standard questionnaires of Young’s Internet Addiction Test and the Symptom Check List 90-Revised (SCL-90-R). Data analysis was carried out using independent t-test with SPSS21. Results indicated that the Internet addicted students, compared with ordinary Internet users had more psychological disorders. Considering the high prevalence of psychological disorders in the Internet addicted students, teaching appropriate use of the Internet to students is an important factor in controlling the Internet addiction.

Abstract: The rapid development and widespread application of Internet has provided a platform for people to participate and discuss social hotspot events. In the meantime, emergency events have attained more attention and have been spread more quickly than they did ever before by this way. However, the public opinion on Internet usually exerts a heavy impact on the development of emergency events as well as the social psychology. This paper presented a cycle model to describe the Internet spreading process of emergency events, and applied the Tobit model to research the influence factors in that process. After analyzing the social psychological impacts, a life-cycle emergency management methodology and the related strategies were proposed for the achievement of healthy spreading environment on Internet.
Alterations in regional homogeneity of resting-state brain activity in internet gaming addicts

Abstract: Backgrounds Internet gaming addiction (IGA), as a subtype of internet addiction disorder, is rapidly becoming a prevalent mental health concern around the world. The neurobiological underpinnings of IGA should be studied to unravel the potential heterogeneity of IGA. This study investigated the brain functions in IGA patients with resting-state fMRI. Methods Fifteen IGA subjects and fourteen healthy controls participated in this study. Regional homogeneity (ReHo) measures were used to detect the abnormal functional integrations. Results Comparing to the healthy controls, IGA subjects show enhanced ReHo in brainstem, inferior parietal lobule, left posterior cerebellum, and left middle frontal gyrus. All of these regions are thought related with sensory-motor coordination. In addition, IGA subjects show decreased ReHo in temporal, occipital and parietal brain regions. These regions are thought responsible for visual and auditory functions. Conclusions Our results suggest that long-time online game playing enhanced the brain synchronization in sensory-motor coordination related brain regions and decreased the excitability in visual and auditory related brain regions.
