Designing a Virtual Manikin Animation Framework Aimed at Virtual Prototyping  [PDF]

Abstract: In the industry, numerous commercial packages provide tools to introduce, and analyse human behaviour in the product's environment (for maintenance, ergonomics...), thanks to Virtual Humans. We will focus on control. Thanks to algorithms newly introduced in recent research papers, we think we can provide an implementation, which even widens, and simplifies the animation capacities of virtual manikins. In order to do so, we are going to express the industrial expectations as for Virtual Humans, without considering feasibility (not to bias the issue). The second part will show that no commercial application provides the tools that perfectly meet the needs. Thus we propose a new animation framework that better answers the problem. Our contribution is the integration - driven by need ~ of available new scientific techniques to animate Virtual Humans, in a new control scheme that better answers industrial expectations.

Abstract: virtual reality (vr) provides another dimension to many engineering applications. its immersive and interactive nature allows an intuitive approach to study both cognitive activities and performance evaluation. market competitiveness means having products meet form, fit and function quickly. rapid prototyping and manufacturing (rp&m) technologies are increasingly being applied to produce functional prototypes and the direct manufacturing of small components. despite its flexibility, these systems have common drawbacks such as slow build rates, a limited number of build axes (typically one) and the need for post processing. this paper presents a virtual assembly rapid prototyping (varp) project which involves evaluating cognitive activities in assembly tasks based on the adoption of immersive virtual reality along with a novel non-layered rapid prototyping for near net shape (nns) manufacturing of components. it is envisaged that this integrated project will facilitate a better understanding of design for manufacture and assembly by utilising equivalent scale digital and physical prototyping in one rapid prototyping system. the state of the art of the varp project is also presented in this paper.

Abstract: Virtual Reality technology is becoming an increasingly popular in diverse areas from scientific data analysis to entertainment. An important feature of this technology is the Stereoscopic display of computer-generated images to produce three-dimensional visual effects. The visualization tool is an ASCII text file driven system to visually simulate the modeled operation in 3D virtual space. Stereovision improves the manufacturing process by analyzing the product before its actual manufacturing. The goal of the virtual prototyping environment is to decrease product development time and costs and also to increase quality by providing continuous computer support for the development cycle. This paper addresses implementation of 3D stereo visualization system which serves in virtual prototyping for productivity improvement in Manufacturing Processes.

Abstract: The animation of human avatars seems very successful; the computer graphics industry shows outstanding results in films everyday, the game industry achieves exploits... Nevertheless, the animation and control processes of such manikins are very painful. It takes days to a specialist to build such animated sequences, and it is not adaptive to any type of modifications. Our main purpose is the virtual human for engineering, especially virtual prototyping. As for this domain of activity, such amounts of time are prohibitive.

Abstract: The gap between CPU and memory speed has always been a critical concern that motivated researchers to study and analyze the performance of memory hierarchical architectures. In the early stages of the design cycle, performance evaluation methodologies can be used to leverage exploration at the architectural level and assist in making early design tradeoffs. In this paper, we use simulation platforms developed using the VisualSim tool to compare the performance of two memory architectures, namely, the Direct Connect architecture of the Opteron, and the Shared Bus of the Xeon multicore processors. Key variations exist between the two memory architectures and both design approaches provide rich platforms that call for the early use of virtual system prototyping and simulation techniques to assess performance at an early stage in the design cycle.

Abstract: Prototyping is an important part in research and development of tangible user interfaces (TUIs). On the way from the idea to a working prototype, new hardware prototypes usually have to be crafted repeatedly in numerous iterations. This brings us to think about virtual prototypes that exhibit the same functionality as a real TUI, but reduce the amount of time and resources that have to be spent. Building upon existing open-source software - the middleware Robot Operating System (ROS) and the 3D simulator Gazebo - we have created a toolkit that can be used for developing and testing fully functional implementations of a tangible user interface as a virtual device. The entire interaction between the TUI and other hardware and software components is controlled by the middleware, while the human interaction with the TUI can be explored using the 3D simulator and 3D input/output technologies. We argue that by simulating parts of the hardware-software co-design process, the overall development effort can be reduced.

Abstract: La realidad virtual (por sus siglas en ingles VR) proporciona otra dimensión para muchas aplicaciones en ingeniería. Su naturaleza inmersiva e interactiva permite utilizar un método intuitivo para estudiar o analizar actividades cognitivas y evaluación del desempe o. La competitividad en el mercado significa lograr de manera rápida productos que cumplan las características de forma, dimensiones y funcionalidad deseadas. Las tecnologías de prototipado y manufactura rápida (por sus siglas en inglés, RP&M), están incrementando su uso en la producción de prototipos funcionales y la manufactura directa de componentes peque os. A pesar de su flexibilidad, estos sistemas tienen algunas desventajas o limitantes tales como la velocidad baja de producción, un número limitado de ejes o direcciones de construcción (típicamente uno) y la necesidad de un post-procesamiento después de su construcción. Este artículo presenta un proyecto denominado Virtual Assembly Rapid Prototyping (VARP) el cual involucra la evaluación de actividades cognitivas durante la realización de tareas de ensamble en un ambiente de realidad virtual y utilizando una técnica novedosa de prototipado rápido de forma casi final (near net shape, NNS) la cual no utiliza una descomposición en capas. Se contempla que este proyecto integral facilitará el entendimiento del dise o para manufactura y ensamble mediante la integración del prototipado virtual y el prototipado físico en un solo sistema de prototipado rápido. El estado del arte del proyecto VARP también se presenta en este artículo.
Virtual Prototyping and Distributed Control for Solar Array with Distributed Multilevel Inverter  [PDF]

Abstract: In this paper, we present the virtual prototyping of a solar array with a grid-tie implemented as a distributed inverter and controlled using distributed algorithms. Due to the distributed control and inherent redundancy in the array composed of many panels and inverter modules, the virtual prototype exhibits fault-tolerance capabilities. The distributed identifier algorithm allows the system to keep track of the number of operating panels to appropriately regulate the DC voltage output of the panels using buck-boost converters, and determine appropriate switching times for H-bridges in the grid-tie. We evaluate the distributed inverter, its control strategy, and fault-tolerance through simulation in Simulink/Stateflow. Our virtual prototyping framework allows for generating arrays and grid-ties consisting of many panels, and we evaluate arrays of five to dozens of panels. Our analysis suggests the achievable total harmonic distortion (THD) of the system may allow for operating the array in spite of failures of the power electronics, control software, and other subcomponents.

It put forward a feasible way for virtual prototyping information integration.
