The moduli space of maps with crosscaps: the relative signs of the natural automorphisms  [PDF]

Abstract: Just as a symmetric surface with separating fixed locus halves into two oriented bordered surfaces, an arbitrary symmetric surface halves into two oriented symmetric half-surfaces, i.e. surfaces with crosscaps. Motivated in part by the string theory view of real Gromov-Witten invariants, we previously introduced moduli spaces of maps from surfaces with crosscaps, developed the relevant Fredholm theory, and resolved the orientability problem in this setting. In this paper, we determine the relative signs of the automorphisms of these moduli spaces induced by interchanges of boundary components of the domain and by the anti-symplectic involution on the target manifold, without any global assumptions on the latter. As immediate applications, we describe sufficient conditions for the moduli spaces of real genus 1 maps and for real maps with separating fixed locus to be orientable; we treat the general genus 2+ case in a separate paper. Our sign computations also lead to an extension of recent Floer-theoretic applications of anti-symplectic involutions and to a related reformulation of these results in a more natural way.

Abstract: We consider two cycles on the moduli space of compact type curves and prove that they coincide. The first is defined by pushing forward the virtual fundamental classes of spaces of relative stable maps to an unparameterized rational curve, while the second is obtained as the intersection of the Abel section of the universal Jacobian with the zero section. Our comparison extends results of Cavalieri-Marcus-Wise where the same identity was proved over on the locus of rational tails curves.

Abstract: The moduli space of stable relative maps to the projective line combines features of stable maps and admissible covers. We prove all standard Gromov-Witten classes on these moduli spaces of stable relative maps have tautological push-forwards to the moduli space of curves. In particular, the fundamental classes of all moduli spaces of admissible covers push-forward to tautological classes. Consequences for the tautological rings of the moduli spaces of curves include methods for generating new relations, uniform derivations of the socle and vanishing statements of the Gorenstein conjectures for the complete, compact type, and rational tail cases, tautological boundary terms for Ionel's, Looijenga's, and Getzler's vanishings, and applications to Gromov-Witten theory.

Abstract: Let $X$ be an algebraic variety and let $S$ be a tropical variety associated to $X$. We study the tropicalization map from the moduli space of stable maps into $X$ to the moduli space of tropical curves in $S$. We prove that it is a continuous map and that its image is compact and polyhedral. Loosely speaking, when we deform algebraic curves in $X$, the associated tropical curves in $S$ deform continuously; moreover, the locus of realizable tropical curves inside the space of all tropical curves is compact and polyhedral. Our main tools are Berkovich spaces, formal models, balancing conditions, vanishing cycles and quantifier elimination for rigid subanalytic sets.

Abstract: For any smooth complex projective variety X and smooth very ample hypersurface Y in X, we develop the technique of genus zero relative Gromov-Witten invariants of Y in X in algebro-geometric terms. We prove an equality of cycles in the Chow groups of the moduli spaces of relative stable maps that relates these relative invariants to the Gromov-Witten invariants of X and Y. Given the Gromov-Witten invariants of X, we show that these relations are sufficient to compute all relative invariants, as well as all genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants of Y whose homology and cohomology classes are induced by X.

Abstract: We consider the moduli problem of stable maps from a Riemann surface into a supermanifold; in twistor-string theory, this is the instanton moduli space. By developing the algebraic geometry of supermanifolds to include a treatment of superstacks we prove that such moduli problems, under suitable conditions, give rise to Deligne-Mumford superstacks (where all of these objects have natural definitions in terms of supergeometry). We make some observations about the properties of these moduli superstacks, as well as some remarks about their application in physics and their associated Gromov-Witten theory.

Abstract: We present a necessary and sufficient condition for existence of a contractible, non-separating and noncontractible separating Hamiltonian cycle in the edge graph of polyhedral maps on surfaces. In particular, we show the existence of contractible Hamiltonian cycle in equivelar triangulated maps. We also present an algorithm to construct such cycles whenever it exists.

Abstract: We prove a localization formula for the moduli space of stable relative maps. As an application, we prove that all codimension i tautological classes on the moduli space of stable pointed curves vanish away from strata corresponding to curves with at least i-g+1 genus 0 components. (The proof of this result is quite short and naive.) As consequences, we prove and generalize various conjectures and theorems about various moduli spaces of curves (due to Getzler, Ionel, Faber, Looijenga, Pandharipande, Diaz, and others). This theorem appears to be the geometric content behind these results; the rest is straightforward graph combinatorics. The theorem also suggests the importance of the stratification of the moduli space by number of rational components.

Abstract: This paper provides some technical results needed in "Formalism for Relative Gromov-Witten Invariants." We study line-bundles on the moduli stacks of relative stable and rubber maps that are used to define relative Gromov-Witten invariants in the sense of J. Li. Relations between these line-bundles yield degeneration formulae. In addition we prove a technical result called the Trivial Cylinders Theorem.
